I know why Jericho would be returning if he does. A quick glance at the Jakyl World Title stat sheet says this:

51.) Chris Jericho: 219 days
52.) CM Punk: 214 days

A win this Sunday is gonna move Punk past Y2J and closer to the top 50!

More fantasy card booking cos I'm bored.

After reading through the Simmons basketball book i wondered about card building using his dream team criteria.

Basically you can't just toss in the big name wrestlers, you gotta choose their years carefully and you can't just choose their prime years either. But also how they complement each other.

Like a wrestler could be in his prime in 1997, but complement another guy for an even better matchup using his 2004 self.

Also you pretty much can't have a card that's just five star after five star if it burns the crowd out those kind of things.

Right guys so

I was listening to that Punk interview and it was great and all, but the interviewer really laid into Del Rio, called him boring and stuff, and apparently this isn't a rare opinion.

I love the guy, personally, I don't see what the problem is. I think he could do some MORE heelish stuff (not just keeping in the armbar after the match). I don't get why he isn't over or whatever.

Alberto Del Rio's problem is that he has the promo style of a face (lined to hell and back with catchphrases) but is a heel.

Good wrestler, but really needs to change his promo style. His catchphrases don't even get cheap heat so yeah of course his reaction is going to be mixed, cause basically you change his alignment to face and change his gimmick to not be an aristocrat and this is the kinda stuff you could get people to sing along with.

So yeah it's not like he's bad on the mic, but his approach is completely wrong as a heel. I'm pretty sure he can do better too based on his vignettes but he doesn't "get it" and apparently no one's telling him.

I think when people call Del Rio "boring" that a large part of that comes with trying to watch wrestling with a post-modern mindset and not coming from the same approach WWE is aiming for.

Heels aren't by and large supposed to be super-exciting. You're not supposed to be like "SWEET time for another ADR promo, I love that guy." You're supposed to be like "Dammit I'm sick and tired of this guy coming out here every week and blathering on about his destiny, won't SOMEBODY come shut this idiot up?" Watching WWE with a smark mindset really kills the product.

Could ADR's promos be better? Of course. But I think to criticize him for not being exciting or dynamic on the mic is to miss the point entirely. As long as he's getting the storyline points across and sufficiently antagonizing the audience, he's doing his job.

And likewise, that's why Cole is so bad for the product, because it's been well over a year now and no one has ever shut him up for very long, and the person that did so is a retiree. No one benefits from the Cole angle except MAYBE Bryan and even that's pushing it, because it requires him to actually win in the end to shut Cole up and that's never a given with WWE.

MVP's was probably the best example of a guy who "gets it" in recent memory. When he was a heel I'm pretty sure his only "catchphrase" was "I'm better than you" and that's the kinda thing you just throw in and keep going to taunt your opponent.

Then when he turns face all the sudden he's saying "BALLINNN" and that crappy (bad execution but the idea was right) "bottles poppin" tirade all over the place. He did the BALLIN thing in matches when he was heel but yeah, kept it out of his promos. Actually it's kind of a recurring theme among the guys who are good on the mic-- Stone Cold doesn't do the "hell yeah" thing as a heel, Jericho doesn't do the "Y.. .2... J!" or "AYATOLLAH" or most of his other 19 catchphrases as a heel-- think the only one he'd do reliably is "I'm the king of the world!" which was kinda obnoxious I guess.

So I guess the only good catchphrases to have as a heel are:

- Ones that directly insult/annoy the other guy ("WHAT?" "I'm better than you")
- Just over the top obnoxious enough that the crowd hates it ("EXCUSE ME!")

The second is a lot tougher to pull off and probably what Del Rio's going for, but he should probably limit it to one catchphrase at most. I don't think his "MY NAME" or "DESTINY" really pull it off. He should just stick to calling people perros and peasants and just leave it at that.

I'm not sure why I'm going on a tirade I just think it's interesting that I've never really been able to crystalize my problem with Del Rio's (and a lot of other guys') promos till now.

To be fair to Cole Jakyl he isn't bad as King who is pretty lazy, refuses to really put over anyone besides Cena when announcing, points out botches instead of covering them up, and basically is just phoning it in. I'd rather have Cole over King right now. Despite the Cole heel angle not really having any pay off. At least he does his job.

Pointing out botches is good if done right. WCW announcers (and JR to some extent) were good about doing stuff like "oh he just barely grazed him with that kick" or "I don't think he got all of that one" when a kick to the head would clearly miss, and stuff like that. Not to say King does that but I hate it when they just get ignored which is what all the regular announcers seem to do these days.

Cole is a bad announcer cause he argues with the other guys too much. I'd argue the only reason King seems so bad lately is he can't roll with Cole's garbage as well as Josh can so matches go on tangents way too easily, and then I think that legit annoys him so he doesn't say enough period. King + Scott Stanford was a good announce team so I don't think it's really King's fault.

Now that they basically got rid of Jack Korpella and let NXT/Superstars be all-Josh-all-the-tjme he has definitely reclaimed his throne as WWE's best announcer.

I mean, he kinda never lost it since no one else stepped up, but when his role was limited to SD PBP and 1/2 Superstars color commentary, his dominance was lessened.

Josh Matthews/Scott Stanford/Booker T would be the best announce team I think. I see Stanford as being able to play off of Booker T's silliness without it distracting from the match, and Stanford being just weird enough that Josh can play off it but that the combined weirdness at the table doesn't overwhelm Josh like it would with say Josh/Booker/Striker.

The problem is that if WWE is aiming for having heels be boring, that's stupid. It's the same issue with any character in any medium - if you set out to make a character that the audience doesn't enjoy watching/reading/seeing, and they don't enjoy the character, congrats, you succeeded in your goal of...making people not like your product. Yay? There's a difference between not being likable and not being enjoyable, and Del Rio's droning, meaningless promos tend to fall into the latter category. You should want to see the heel get their ass kicked sure but you should also find yourself wanting to see what they're going to say next, because if their promos aren't entertaining you, then the entire segment in which they speak just completely failed. It's a different form of entertainment but being boring is awful regardless of what alignment a wrestler is.

That's true, Del Rio has really awesome facial expressions. In very brief segments when all he has to do is say one or two lines then wink or smirk, he's fine. It's just when he gets a lengthy promo that it becomes endless repetition that never goes anywhere.

Even short Del Rio promos are bad because all he does is shoehorn all his catchphrases in. Long ones he does that with some spacing so they all seem the same and since he's a heel he doesn't get the energy that repetitive face promos get so they seem boring. I still think he's got skill he just doesn't realize that's what he's doing wrong. Like I said, his vignettes make me think that's the case. Unless he's just really bad at improv and doesn't want to put effort in to memorize some good material or can't make his own good material because the WWE writers wrote his vignettes in full.

But yeah his facial expressions are awesome.

Basically any combo is good as long as you keep Cole away from anyone who says dumb stuff that isn't smarter than he is, and keep Booker T or Striker with Josh Matthews, and have JR or Booker T involved in any announce team unless it's like Superstars where big stuff that you need guy to scream for doesn't really comes up. ... which kinda limits Cole to the B shows, actually, since JR and Booker are both prone to saying stupid things.

So yeah I like that combo Maniac proposed but replace all instances of Cole with JR except NXT. Cole can stay on NXT.

Assuming JR absolutely isn't an option I guess Maniac's configuration works, though I think Josh/Booker/Stanford is the better PPV team.

Way too much Cole on these lists. JR/Cole/Booker especially seems like a trainwreck waiting to happen. I sorta see the logic, that a heel announcer seems necessary on a big show, but... yeah, I think Cole would be in nonstop "lol what did you say" mode with those two.

What WWE really needs is a heel announcer that can ignore the other announcers most of the time.

I think with JR and Booker COMBINED though they can shut Cole up if he starts getting out of hand.

You'd have to give JR free reign though. Over-produced JR sucks. Josh and Booker are like the only people in the world that have managed to cope with it. Tazz left, Grish got demoted then left, Foley left, Cole lets it empower him way too much, King gets confused, and Striker got neutered by it.

I was skeptical that the two would be able to keep Cole in line, and if they did it'd just lead to a lot of awkward silences for Cole, but if it supposedly worked for Hell in a Cell then maybe I'm wrong! I do think if Cole can be kept in line that's probably the strongest announce team for PPVs because all three guys are capable of getting into the action and screaming if something big happens which is really important for a PPV, and this is probably Josh's one weakness as an announcer (and one of Cole's few strengths-- nowadays these are the only three guys that I trust to be able to get sufficiently excited for things).
