Except, he wasn't.

Escaping the Cena STF a third time would be a feat never to happen in WWE history.

Of course, we're arguing Kayfabe-wise, but Cena was in control and Vince ended up screwing it up. It was a way to make Cena's loss look not fully legitimate while making Punk's win more legitimate than had he cheated. It was "clean-ish" as it were.

Yep, this exactly. They didn't want FULL ON cheating, but they sure as hell weren't about to let Cena just quite simply get pinned with no shenanigans, either.

And honestly the worst thing for me was SummerSlam when Cena had his foot on the rope.

I mean, barely anything was made of it afterwards. It was just to sell HHH as having made a dumb mistake by making himself guest ref and to stop Cena losing clean. Very lame.

ah. reposted for your benefit:

Cena tries AA off the top, Punk counters into Frankensteiner, knees him, GTS' Cena but he flies through the middle rope and out of the ring. Punk throws him back in the ring, Vince appears, distracts him and gives Cena time to recover. Punk runs back in, Cena does an STF, and you know how it goes from there.

It was the first GTS but it was in the ribs.

And many would have said a second Attitude Adjustment was a guaranteed victory or a second STF was.

I mean I thought Cena had it on the FIRST AA, so when he hit the second I was already cursing.

Yeah, but at that point you're in uncharted territory. When you're dealing with somebody who's already pushed the boundaries of withstanding Cena's stuff, you can't say he's definitely not going to withstand even more.

The GTS Punk pinned Cena with is the first he actually hit properly. The one that pushed Cena out of the ring was only in the ribs.

Third STF only happens as it did because of Vince, otherwise Punk gets Cena back in the ring, Cena kicks out at 2, and things go from there, there isn't a third STF unless it's attempted by a Cena who *hasn't* just had an extra thirty seconds of recovery courtesy of Vince.

You are clearly discounting the Cena Superman factor, which is so long as he's not down for the three count, he can always summon up the strength to get back into any match.

Pretty sure almost the exact same thing happened the last time TNA tried to do an iron man match, so it shouldn't be too surprising!

IIRC, the last time they tried an iron man was in a semi-final match in a WHC tournament featuring Jeff Hardy vs Kurt Angle (keep in mind this tournament was for the title that RVD vacated due to injury, but would not be awarded again until the same PPV in which RVD returned from injury).

If I have this right, the match went 30 minutes to a time limit draw, at which point they were given FIVE MORE MINUTES which also ended in a draw, so they were given FIVE MORE MINUTES AGAIN and that ended in a draw, so they just called it a draw and ended the PPV.

Then they had another one-fall match that also ended in a draw (or no-contest maybe) so they just said **** it and made the eventual tournament finals a triple threat with Angle, Hardy, and Anderson (who legit won his semifinal match).

I think I remember that. But didn't Anderson go last on that card? I kinda remember them going to a draw and then saying "It's a draw, does this mean whoever wins Anderson vs (whoever) they win the title tonight?"

And sadly they didn't just end the PPV after the two attempts at FIVE MORE MINUTES. Anderson vs. Pope had to follow that match and they kinda stunk up the place.
