JaKyL25 posted...
I think when people call Del Rio "boring" that a large part of that comes with trying to watch wrestling with a post-modern mindset and not coming from the same approach WWE is aiming for.

Heels aren't by and large supposed to be super-exciting. You're not supposed to be like "SWEET time for another ADR promo, I love that guy." You're supposed to be like "Dammit I'm sick and tired of this guy coming out here every week and blathering on about his destiny, won't SOMEBODY come shut this idiot up?" Watching WWE with a smark mindset really kills the product.

Could ADR's promos be better? Of course. But I think to criticize him for not being exciting or dynamic on the mic is to miss the point entirely. As long as he's getting the storyline points across and sufficiently antagonizing the audience, he's doing his job.

Yeah, I know this is back a ways, but it's been on my mind a lot and this is probably the only chance I'll get to air this.

ADR can put on one hell of a match. The minute his slow, plodding entrance ends and he locks up, he's completely amazing to watch. But damn, that entrance and those promos just suck.

A good heel makes you want somebody to kick his teeth in. Back in the day, I hated Owen Hart because he came across as irritating and obnoxious in his promos. That made him a good heel. I use Owen as an example because ADR seems to want to be those things, but he's not; he's just boring. He comes out in a car every week, but so what? Is he going for an envy thing there? It doesn't work. Then there are the snooze-fests that were his in-ring vignettes. "I'm having a celebration on the retirement of Edge! Do you hate me yet?" No, I'm just bored, Mr. DR.

The thing is, ADR is competent on the mic. He's not tripping over his words, he knows what he wants to say and can get his point across. He just lacks that spark that a good heel can provide.

I just think he needs to reinvent himself a bit. Hes the same guy he was when he debuted and hes been in the spotlight nearly constantly. The character needs to evolve a bit, after all DESTINY is less interesting once you've been champ and he never really connected it to anything greater so by this point its a dead letter.

Im not saying he needs to turn face necessarily, he just needs to reassert himself as a character before he belongs in the main event again. A trip to smackdown could do wonders for him.

I don't blame any of this on ADR. Much like the complaints of Cena being boring in the ring, I think "WWE booking" takes 100% of the fall for this. We don't know if ADR is capable of being entertaining or not, because they haven't asked him to be. They're relying on "the audience will hate him because he's rich" and I think they're way over-estimating just how much pull that really has, but I won't say any more because the discussion will probably get political <_<

I hate to give them this much credit, but it seems they want to be a little more subtle than that. Like, I'm getting a vibe of them wanting him to come across as boring and unoriginal so the fans will be like, "Man, this guy is boring and unoriginal!" then make the connection to "He's only getting this treatment because he's rich!!! OMG!" You know?

Like, he's a slightly older and more refined version of the classic "Entitled jerk who thinks everything should be handed to him despite the fact that he hasn't earned it" stereotype. The one that we're used to seeing be played out by some kid in his 20s whose dad was a big deal in the 80s.

i actually agree with this

everyone knows wrestlers make a lot of money the fans don't care if someone is rich

it's how their wealth is presented

people hated the million dollar man because he bought off wrestlers and rubbed his money in people's faces and promised little kids money if the could bounce a ball and then knocked it out of their hands just to be a dick

It's not so much "the audience hates ADR because he's rich" as it is "the audience hates ADR because he seems to get more opportunities and more favorable treatment than he deserves" and the audience is left on their own to make the "and he gets those things because he is rich" connection.

I think they're doing a decent job of not making it as in-your-face as the Million Dollar Man was. Like I said, not to give them too much credit, but there's at least a little bit of subtlety in play here.

The thing is though, he HAS earned everything in WWE. You can say that maybe he only got a job in the first place due to his wealth and standing, but ever since he beat Rey clean in his first match he's performed very well in kayfabe.

Million Dollar Man couldn't win the title so he tried to BUY it. That's a whole level of entitlement past Del Rio.

He won Money in the Bank cleanly.

And besides, WWE precedent has long established that the fairness of your victories has absolutely nothing to do with what opportunities you earn. Sure, he may have cheated to beat someone for #1 contendership, but then it logically follows that he got that opportunity at the title not due to his wealth, but due to his in-ring cheating.

i think where michael cole is concerned, it's wwe conflating something that's entertaining (to certain people) with something that's effective

just because something makes someone laugh or get angry doesn't really mean it's doing what it ought to be doing

cole's shtick may get a reaction, but it's not leading anywhere and ultimately the product suffers more because of it

Fair enough. But I am referring more to the emotional reaction of viewers, not the "kayfabe logic" of how WWE works (which WE may care about, but I'd say the average viewer probably does not). I feel as if they are trying to present ADR as someone who has been given a lot more than he has earned. Whether or not they're executing that angle properly is certainly up for debate!

Exactly. There was a point in time where they had an opportunity to MAKE it lead somewhere and get someone more over because of it, but that opportunity has long since passed.
