What color is the place you live on the map below?

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/3/1/6/AAQLRwAADMqs.jpg

I was bored a few days ago and made this map. It's supposed to be divided so that each section has about the same population. Figured I could make a poll to see if that's right. Sorry this isn't something more interesting.

So all that blue area has about the same population as the purple area? I find that surprising.
That blue area is mostly extremely rural places, though. Like, California easily has the largest share of its population even though not much of CA is in the blue zone.

Red: AL, FL, GA
Orange: AK, HI, (Most of the) Pacific Coast
Yellow: IA, IL, MN, MO, WI
Green: DC, DE, KY, MD, NC, TN, VA, WV
Blue: ...It's the really big one in the West that mostly isn't on the coast. I'm not trying to figure which states it is.
Purple: MI, PA
Brown: NY/NJ and anything northeast of them

The green area is the one I'm surprised is equivalent to the others, it doesn't have any of the really fuck-off big metro areas in it, but I guess after you add up VA, most of NC, most of MD, and then also significant chunks of Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana it adds up

DC area is the sixth-largest metro area in the country? (4th if you count DC/Baltimore as one metro.) Unless you're the sort of person who defines "really big metro area" as just NYC/Los Angeles and maybe Chicago, DC should probably be on your list.

Yeah I guess that's true, I'm underestimating the size of DC/Baltimore, it's big

As far as the other areas go;

Red - Atlanta and Miami - DC is bigger than both of these but Red has ALL of Florida and Georgia which seems enormous
Orange - Los Angeles
Yellow - Chicago
Blue - Nothing really but it's big and has a lot of decently-sized metros in it (Phoenix, San Diego, Denver)
Purple - Philadelphia (which DC is slightly bigger than, my bad)
Brown - NYC
Gray - Houston and Dallas

Actually, if you zoom in Philly itself is in the brown area. That whole metro is annoyingly right on a boundary line with no way to avoid splitting it weird.

Unrelated, I also made this other map people might find interesting. The areas shaded in green take up roughly 3.1% of America's land area but contain roughly 50.1% of the US population.

Top 50 metro rankings:

6 . Washington, DC (comparable to Philly)
20. Baltimore (comparable to Denver)
22. Charlotte (comparable to Orlando)
30. Cincinnati (comparable to Las Vegas)
35. Nashville (comparable to Cleveland)
37. Virginia Beach (comparable to San Jose)
41. Raleigh (comparable to Milwaukee)
44. Richmond
45. Louisville (comparable to Salt Lake City)

Lots of big places in green and many of them are younger.

side note: weird that Raleigh and Durham are considered two different metros, or combined they would be around 30.

Yeah, it makes sense when you add it all up, since NC, VA, MD, and TN are all reasonably big states and it has a few chunks of other places too - my point of surprise still makes sense I think though since every other area's second-largest metro is bigger than Baltimore (except for the purple area which I originally thought included Philadelphia, so now I'm a little bit surprised by the purple area too, but I think both the green and purple areas have a lot of suburban sprawl compared to the other regions)

Eastern US just has a denser population in general. Here's the areas of each of these regions:

Brown: ~97,000 sq mi
Purple: ~174,000 sq mi
Red: ~182,000 sq mi
Green: ~202,000 sq mi
Gray: ~321,000 sq mi
Yellow: ~482,000 sq mi
Orange: ~794,000 sq mi (~223,000 sq mi without Alaska)
Blue: ~1,280,000 sq mi

All of these regions have major metro areas and large low population rural areas, but it's pretty clear that the western half is just a lot more empty in general except for the Pacific coast.

Not sure if gray massively underperformed because it's that underrepresented on B8 or if it's because people in Texas can't figure where they are on the map. (Because Texas is too big, not because Texas people are less smart.)

Hint: If you're in Texas and aren't sure which color your county is, it's gray.

Nah, it's just relatively underrepresented. There's two or three of us in the DFW area, and maybe a couple across the rest of the state. I believe there's one guy in Oklahoma, but I can't recall ever having heard of a single user in the rest of the grey region
