But can someone tell me what the antivax people are trying to say with this meme? Its currently trending on Facebook and because people wore masks and socially distanced during flu season is apparently a laughable explanation, so what exactly are they accusingI guess the government, of exactly?

Tony your mistake is trying to apply logic to a situation involving anti-vaxxers.

What theyre saying is that all these COVID cases are actually just normal flu cases and the reason no one is taking about the flu or flu season is because there is a nationwide doctor conspiracy to push all those cases into COVID cases so the government can microchip you and watch you pee. Or something.

Regardless of how this actually got done, I'm choosing to believe that Ossoff's involvement was that, being the only millennial in the Senate he was called in to explain crypto to all the old people.

btw bipartisan infrastructure week set to pass somewhere around tuesday morning.

Schumer told them all he's not letting them start their August recess until they actually get this done. They tried to speed it up and get it done by yesterday but a Republican Senator objected (they needed unanimous consent to fast track) so they're forced to just eat their vacation and I'm loving it lol. I believe Schumer also wants them to get the reconciliation process started before he lets them go as well, but they have to finish this up first.

I'll be the first to admit I have a tough time following the dueling amendment debate here because I'm not into crypto but my understanding is that getting this right is actually kinda important because at one point one of the amendments was written in a way that would actually favor the implementation method that is more energy-intensive (and thus environmentally harmful) over an alternate method that was less so.

I think that amendment was updated to fix that problem but yeah.

All this because the bipartisan crew has to come up with wacky ways to pay for their bill because god forbid we raise taxes on the rich, corporations, or even just enforce the actual tax code as it currently is better like the reconciliation package intends to do in order to pay for itself.

Yeah, I was reading up on it after I posted that and it sounds like the Warner amendment specifically penalizes proof of stake and not proof of work which is definitely a bad idea (I had just seen the original version that added reporting requirements for everybody involved).

Im semi-joking about banning it, but I do think that as it stands it has some hugely negative externalities (both environmentally as well as facilitating illegal activity such as ransomware attacks) and I have yet to hear a convincing case that It actually does anything positive. Banning it would definitely be preferable to allowing it to exist as-is in a completely unregulated state imo.

Im confused how this changes much.

Youll still need machines doing calculations to maintain the blockchain and ledger, right?

Anyway, as someone who has made some money on crypto, and is still hodling thousands in some tokens, Id be ok if it was banned.

Its literally gambling based on nothing, and while yeah, some regular folks are making money off of it, its also a way for the super rich to get super richer off the backs of bagholding shmucks dreaming of the moon.

But Proof of Work involves algorithmically (and unnecessarily) increasing the calculations to limit the number of blocks that get generated via mining. This causes energy usage to scale with the number of active miners without a corresponding uptick in new token generation.

By contrast Proof of Stake is estimated to use 99.95% less energy because each person participating in the staking is not running their own rig to perform calculation, they are just contributing the tokens they own into the staking pool and new blocks are rewarded proportional to the amount staked.

So yeah, there is a big difference between the two.

Edit: Imagine 100 people with 100 computers running 24 hours a day and each of them has a 1% chance to win the new block reward. Now imagine 100 people with their computers turned off and each of them has a 1% chance to win the new block reward and there is 1 computer somewhere else that determined the winner. It's not quite as simple as that, but it's along those lines and scaled up to significantly more than a 1 / 100 difference.

First of all, it's not in the abstract, we can literally see the effects in real time as extreme weather, climate deaths, and climate migrations increase. I've talked to rural conservatives who don't think anything can be done (or just don't want to do anything) and even they admit they see the current effects because it's so blisteringly obvious. It's really not in question anymore. The fight is over what to do about it.

Secondly I didn't say it would be easy, or even that it would happen. I'm being honest about the path forward. If it does happen it would require an immense amount of organization and education, and also to just stop dancing around the issue.

Also humanity is absolutely not fucked. That's ridiculous. But lest you think I'm approaching this from an optimistic place I'll spell it out for you. The rich and powerful have enough resources and tech to ensure their survival. What's actually going to happen is the rise of ecofascism. Rich nations will abandon the global poor and millions or billions of people will die, but "humanity" is not going to go extinct. Another part of the way forward is getting people to realize that climate change is not going to affect everyone equally and this is not a problem for humanity as a species. We aren't all in this together and ironically the people who got us into the mess will be the most likely to survive what's coming.

I don't really care about what Rand Paul has to say on the subject, because he is a fascist and is in that group.

You know, I bet pretty much everyone would support anti-COVID measures if stopping COVID didn't require them to change anything about their lives. Climate change is the same way; everybody wants to do something about it in the abstract, but only if fixing it requires nothing from them personally. We just need to find a way to fix climate change that keeps life exactly the same as it is now for everyone.
