i'd say covid is a good example. no, trump didn't create covid and it's obviously a challenge that the whole world is facing. but no other country leader has been as completely atrocious at handling it as trump except maaayyybe bolsonaro.

my prime minister has been terrible at dealing with covid but he's still been leagues better than trump at it.

The reason Trump handled Covid so poorly is because conservatives let the 2016 election victory get to their heads, so they tried to make it seem like nothing changed since then and had to dance around the pandemic as a result.

I'd say it's karma for Trump since much of the reason he even got elected President anyways was because of those Comey letters casting doubt on Hillary Clinton at the worst possible time. Oh and congratulations America for proving the problem all along was not wanting a woman as POTUS.

Trump handled covid poorly because (in addition to just being an idiot) hes a sociopath who literally didnt care about hundreds of thousands of Americans dying except for how those deaths affected him politically

I just felt all along like Trump was in the position Hillary Clinton was in in 2016. I'd say it's amazing Trump managed to fool so many into thinking he's still just an upstart, but I guess anti-government sentiment and Biden's failing to get word out helped.

Thing is, Trump was arguably more impressive in 2020 than in 2016 where he lucked out facing an opponent much of the country was sick of and still managed to lose the popular vote. I figured his deficiencies would come back to bite him SOME time, and the fact it took only one term is astonishing. Even if it was under "strange" circumstances, Trump's administration was arguably far more divisive than Bush's first term.

Post from a Libertarian/Republican friend, thinking on it more, with that comment Pelosi has 100% killed any future student loan forgiveness for the foreseeable future, no Republican is going to go against this.

Republicans were never going to go in favor of student loan forgiveness. It's a welfare policy and you can't do those perfectly equitably. You could forgive student loans and institute free tuition and you'd still get people whining about how they paid their loans. You could send out repayment for those loans and people would complain that now you're giving money to people who don't need it and whine about the debt. Politicians will come up with any excuse to not do something they just don't want to do and there will always be people to buy into it.

Also, we don't NEED input from Pelosi or Republicans as much as she wants us to think. She's covering for Biden.

That depends on what the definition of "socialism" is. Going by the technical definition (community ownership of the means of production), neither one is anything even close to socialism. Going by the the more usual modern definition (stuff GOP voters hate), Medicaid is 100% socialism but Medicare is usually not (though sometimes it is, such as when Black people are allowed to use it).

In "we all knew but now we have receipts" news: Trump pressured top DOJ officials to declare that the election was corrupt even though they have found no instances of widespread fraud so that he and the GOP could push to overturn the election.

Contemporary notes by the Acting Deputy AG have Trump saying, "Just say that the elction was corrupt + leave the rest to me" (and he names some allies in Congress like Jim Jordan and Ron Johnson.)

Comedy line: "You guys may not be following the internet the way I do."

Yeah, that was pathetic.

Over in the Senate there was reporting this morning that Sinema told Schumer she was going on vacation so if they didn't finish up whatever procedural stuff they needed to on infrastructure, etc. she was peace'ing out regardless. (And this would have included a hypothetical eviction moratorium extension since if the House actually did something it would have needed to go to them)

Pretty much nothing matters more to Congress then their vacations - which probably isn't even the right word for them given how frequent they are.

She MUST be primaried. 100%. And don't tell me we can't do better. We did better in Arizona already. Mark Kelly is better than Martha McSall--err Kyrsten Sinema. It's easy to be confused by the two. I'm not sure they aren't just the same person at this point.

It's pretty telling that it was Sinema who earlier this week said she couldn't support the $3.5t reconciliation package because it was too much spending (prompting McConnell to praise her and say she was very "brave" for saying so) while Manchin was onboard (or seemed to be) with it.

Like as annoying a barrier that Manchin is to good and just things happening, Sinema is by far the worst Democratic senator. Manchin, Feinstein, etc. can't even compare which is saying something.

I warned everyone I talked too she sucked before she was elected. Her voting history in the house was abysmal, but all people would focus on was her wacky outfits and the fact Mike Pence was forced to swear in a bisexual.

The actual progressive candidate in Arizona running for governor got destroyed because Arizona still sucks. Thats why Sinema won.

The only hesitation I have there is a true, genuine, actually good progressive ran the same year as Sinema for governor and got absolutely smoked. We can do better than Sinema because Arizona isnt West Virginia but it also isnt one of the good states yet.

Kelly has been fine though and we should be able to find someone around his level at least. Literally boring generic Democrat is even better than Sinema.

Dooming conservative politics forever to own the libs

I believe this could actually be constitutional for states to do, because voting is not actually a right established under the U.S. Constitution (like free speech or gun ownership). States are allowed to discriminate for non-prohibited reasons against non-protected classes. For example, states could enter registered voters into a lottery and randomly select 10% of them to be eligible to vote.

There may possibly be a right to autonomy in making healthcare decisions for oneself, although it isn't expressly stated in the Constitution. I think most conservatives think the cases supporting that position were wrongly decided anyway.

This. There's a thread on the politics board about a radio host who was super anti-vax, even to the point where he was still tweeting anti-vax shit while in the hospital. Suddenly he took a turn for a worse and stopped being anti-vax, and started saying he wished he got the vaccine and all that. Last few days, he got put on a ventilator and now the ventilator isn't enough and he needs treatment the hospital he's at literally can't provide, so they're trying to get him stable enough to move him to another.

Meanwhile, while he's laying there dying, his co-host is still spouting anti-vax shit.

People who won't get vaccinated are absolutely making a massively stupid and selfish decision, but that doesn't mean they deserve to get super sick or die. And that's before we get to people who either can't get vaxxed (like kids, as jakyl mentions), are immunocompromised, or are just one of the unlucky few who get sick even despite being vaccinated.

Well yeah, theres going to be some deaths which are sad, but I honestly think if you are rooting for the human race as a whole, the best outcome is this suddenly becomes twice as deadly. One of the largest factors of if you are going to be vaccinated is your level of societal trust, and eliminating humans with low societal trust is what lets societies collectively come together and survive.

Prior to 300 years ago people with low levels of societal trust just died on their own by wild animals, famine, marauders whatever. Now they dont, and we are seeing why thats a problem.
