Just finished YSVIII yesterday. Really good! I don't know about this one. VIII was a Vita game. This started as a PS4 game, and while these graphics aren't "bad" per se, it seems bland.

Also this one seems needlessly edgy/dirge of cerberusy

the airport fight in civil war feels tonally distinct from the rest of the film. It's good, but it feels like a completely different movie.

Not sure about Ys IX to be honest. I just finished VIII and liked it a lot but that was a Vita game to start out with - for a game that started on the PS4 IX looks sloppy

I blame the whole "are video games art" debate. People simplify that statement into something like "can a videogame be an art film." The answer there is clearly no, but that doesn't stop developers from trying. You're absolutely right that most people and critics are comfortable to discuss a game's story as purely isolated from its design/mechanics.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

everyone on the chat said she looked op but I think this character is going to have real problems in one on one non-casual situations.

so many unsafe moves and as sakurai himself pointed out, extremely weak in the air and lots of openings for whiffed normals.

yeah you'll do well against the cpu and players who like to hold forward but if your opponent knows how to jump you're kinda screwed

anybody watch the three hour tim rogers video about the last of us (1)? pretty good stuff - I suggest watching it in three sittings. I think he gets at some of the issues people are having with the sequel in a deeper way than simply saying "they hate sjws" or "they really like joel" or "abby sucks why would I want to play as her."

rogers does a thorough job explaining how the gameplay mechanics of tlou work in tandem with the narrative in order to create the feeling of a role-playing esque "player character as an actor" situation. it's not just the fact that elly is there and that she is well-written, but the gamplay itself creates a rhythm that mimics protection, providing, and bonding.in other words, the gamplay of tlou is less about shooting and killing people and more about defense and persistence.

tlou2's narrative seems bent on reversing this pattern - the player character shifts and enhanced focus on gore/violence/realism wants to operate like a hammer, where the original tlou is more like a welder - a surprisingly subtle portrait of how a relationship develops. tlou2 is the ripping away of a bandage, and it wants to operate exclusively in that traumatic shock. tlou2 wants to convey its message at the expense of the rhythm that drives its meaning.

the question is if the sequel creates a new gameplay/narration connection that is equally successful. the general consensus seems to be no. If tlou drives home the feeling that the player is an active participant in a story they are watching, this game seems to veer too far into film territory. gamers seem to be complaining that they are forced to watch. anyway, I'll be thinking about that when I eventually play this.

tldr; maybe a lot of the story complaints are actually about how the gameplay doesn't fit the game's thematic needs

Thinking about it as well - one of Cold Steel's key problem across the series is too little content padded over too many games. I don't know how busy/hectic CS4 will be, but I'm convinced the whole Erebonia arc could probably have been crunched into 2 games.

You can leave CS1 mostly intact (perhaps cutting the Nord Highlands arc entirely and trimming the Celdic piece), brutally shorten CS2 to its bare minimum (to basically have the entirety of CS2 just be 'the final arc' of the 1st game). Ao's final arc was very long and turned out to be great in the end, but I can't imagine how painful it would have been to stretch that content over an entire game like CS2 did.

In this one, you can cut one of the arcs (maybe Lamare) and trim Heimdallr, and still arrive at a decent 1/2 game.

Do that, remove the mechas and the magic/lore stuff, maybe cut down/fuse some characters in the old Class VII, and you have a solid core to build around.

eh, I kind of completely disagree. as boring as these games can be (and yes, they are often boring) I appreciate the slow build and the way things generally come together at the end.

yeah the whole dragon dungeon seemed like stuff thrown in to make sure this game had a multi-team "final" dungeon type experience

also I too can't follow any of the magic/lore in this game so it mostly went over my head

Would be interesting seeing how people would rank these games not including the epic case for each game. Feel like that would affect some games more than others.

Main series only and not thinking about DLC cases:

3 > 5 > 6 > > 4 > 2 > 1

3-2 is hype as hell, I actually like it more than most of the "epic" cases. 3-1 and 3-4 are also great. 3-3 is not great but it's also pretty good by filler standards.

5-3 is the most underrated case in the series. The rest of them are mediocre, but 5-3 is doing a lot of carrying here.

6-5 is amazing, but I don't know if we're counting it as the "epic" case here. if we are then maybe we drop SOJ below AJ, even though that seems wrong. 6-2 and 6-3 are fairly enjoyable, but both have major issues. 6-1 and 6-4 suck but they're not terrible.

I'm the only one who stans for 4-2 - I actually really enjoy this case. 4-1 is debatably the best introductory case in the series (I still say it's 3-1). 4-3 is the worst case of all time.

2-1 is so stupid it's almost enjoyable for its sheer stupidity. I dislike 2-2 and 2-3 quite a bit, but at least there's gameplay here, which puts it automatically over the first game.

1-1 doesn't count as anything. 1-2 is basically still a tutorial; not bad but it's pure set-up. 1-3 is great the first time through but on repeated playthroughs it can be a chore.

OK - so hear me out. This is just a thought experiment:

What if this game featured "Noel" and "Kelly" instead? I was thinking about Apollo Justice and how 50% of that game's problems get solved immediately if Hobo Nick is a completely new character instead of Phoenix Wright. How much is this game improved if it's set in the same world as TLOU but doesn't feature Joel and Ellie? Obviously this means that Abby's dad isn't the doctor from the first game, but is instead a brand new character. Maybe Noel is a former firefly who killed Abbys dad trying to escape or something, whatever.

Honestly, and I'm mostly interested in Biscuit's take on this - how does this affect your opinion of the game?

the 100% legit correct answer is sojiro. the game goes out of its way to paint him as a lady killer at the beginning. maybe that's just a cover for the fact that futaba is hiding in his house, but I think sojiro gets it

I'll spare you quoting the image again but this is the main problem: ND (just realized that could apply to both Naughty Dog and Neil - whichever works) thinks that this is some really profound thing to think about and not like Introduction to Ethics 101.

I think the point is, as someone in my thirties, I'm just sick of films, tv shows, art, etc that is provocative just to be provocative, and that's what this is. I have no stomach for faux-intellectual grimdark edgy crap. Like I don't need every game to be pure escapism or anything, but if you want to tell a story about revenge there's a way to make it land without blunt uberviolence. there's a way to tell this story where protagonists still live and the message still hits: the first game is actually a great example of this. It's almost like Druckmann got mad at people who "didn't get" the first game's ending and was like "ok, here I'll spell it out for you: JOEL WAS BAD AND THESE PEOPLE ARE LIKE JOEL BUT WORSE"

from chrono cross to ground zeroes to this, I hope developers finally get the message that murdering/torturing/putting beloved main characters through hell doesn't automatically make your stories emotionally resonant. in fact, it often has the opposite effect.

authors I think feel the urge to "kill their darlings" but sometimes (read: usually) it's a cheap play to add stakes that the narrative doesn't necessarily deserve.

however, I will say that if a lot of story stuff is being left out of these leaks (i.e. lots and lots of development and some genuinely non miserable moments of pathos) then this might not be too bad. the point is, stories have to earn deaths and based on the outcry it doesn't feel like this game has.

those ending spoilers seem about right. shame.

note that I am not angered by this development, just a bit disappointed. I just feel like the revenge angle here is not particularly interesting or unique in video games or in other media.

the biggest problem with royal is that the developers failed, yet again, to properly implement Haru so she doesn't feel tacked on

she appears very briefly in like two throwaway scenes. really, they should've completely re-done her social link so that it worked like kasumi's. You can level her up to 5 or 6 and then once she joins you can finish the link.

another issue is that the game is just WAY too easy now on normal while hard has one or two extremely cheap fights that kind of ruin it.

other than that royal is generally much better of an "expanded edition" than golden was. maruki, kasumi, and neo akechi are all pretty good.
