after hankering for a pre-code after black legion i decided to throw this on. james cagney is a broke bellhop who meets broke cleaning lady joan blondell and they became con artists together, traveling around swanky hotels in various cities to find marks. cagney and blondell have pretty electric chemistry (see also: footlight parade) which carries the film, as it's not exactly the most plot-heavy movie. there's a lot of innuendo which is fun and watching cons succeed or fail is basically inherently dramatic, right? as usual with pre-code films about economic hardships, despite it being a generally breezy movie, it gets pretty upsetting! which i enjoy, to be clear. comes with a light recommendation and can be rented digitally just about anywhere.

I recently watched Trouble in Paradise; this seems quite similar. how do you think they compare?

His entire premise is flawed because for the most part, nobody is being treated particularly uncompassionately for their stances on taxes or the size of government. When you see right-leaning people being treated in a less-than-compassionate manner it's almost always because they are espousing some sort of bigoted shit.

while this is true, cutting social programs allows bigotry to flourish much more easily, and they really shouldn't be considered separately from each other

basically, "liberal" has come to mean "left" in a US context, but that doesn't really line up with what it actually is; the US is just skewed really really far to the right.

as an ideology, liberalism is more like center- to moderate right-wing ideology.

liberals as individuals might support some social justice movements for women/black people/etc.; and some might self-identify as left-wing because of it. some might even recognize the reality that social justice fundamentally cannot happen without economic justice.

the thing that fundamentally prevents them from being left-wing is that they naively believe that economic justice can be achieved under capitalism; and therefore they ultimately support the continuation of capitalism as an economic system.

as for "progressive": the term isn't necessarily tied to any specific political ideology, so it's fairly nebulous, but generally I think it kinda starts at the leftmost part of liberalism. that is; people who recognize that there are problems that need solving, but don't recognize that they're unsolvable under the current economic system

Social Media is a double edged sword. One, it can spread info quickly, expose abusers easily, and help us find resources faster. On the other hand, info overload is a real problem, misinformation gets spread easier, and garbo social media like Tiktok and Twitter and the like,

it's also damaging people's attention spans. tiktok, notably, is basically automated channel surfing, except most of the channels are just people doing dances to pop songs while text appears on the screen saying some shit like "here are 6 reasons why women belong in the kitchen"

JK Rowling is a decent example. For the most part, she is fairly liberal to my understanding. She is not very liberal with Trans things though. Thus, shes right-wing by default.
