American Christians are far more charitable than the nonreligious. Shockingly their view of generosity tends to stem from personal charitable giving rather than forcible government taxation.

Giving should be done with a cheerful and glad heart. It should not be forced. You cant say you want someone else to make people to give of their whatever and not expect pushback.

it's not really the same thing as "giving" in the traditional sense. society should be set up to provide everyone's needs, and it needs measures in place to prevent people from accumulating too much wealth.

the people who live in that society benefit from it, but in order to do so they also need to accept that some amount of what they make will go back to society (e.g. taxes)

I think NPH's Olaf was too likeable

We're supposed to dislike Olaf for all the rotten things he does but he played it with a charm that made you want to cheer him on.

that kind of charm fits with the themes toward the end of the series though

they were both really good in the role; the film version just didn't really have any other redeeming features so Jim Carrey stood out more.

it's been estimated that there are about 200 sextillion stars in the universe. even if only one star in a million has one planet capable of sustaining life, that's still 200 quadrillion planets

For your monkey typewriter comparison to work, you are assuming the same environment each time. That is, every typewriter has a monkey. But that is not true for the universe. It would be giving many of them broken typewriters or objects that cannot be used to write and some typewriters no monkeys.

Animals eat plants, but they also spread their seeds and convert the oxygen to cabron dioxide.

A world where only plants had existed would be one where all plants died. Same for animals.
This is important because it is supposed to be a random chance that either would exist.

the universe is infinitely huge. there's a potentially infinite number of planets capable of supporting life. even if there's only a 0.000 000 000 000 001 percent chance of a planet developing that way, it's inevitable that one eventually would. if you have an infinite number of monkeys with typewriters, eventually one of them will bash out Hamlet

No problem. Anyways, I mention the social programs that Hawkings had at his disposal because the people who hate having these programs the most and try to not pay for them are these same business people who claim they are self-made.
That is why they rave about it so much. They basically say that everyone should be like them and they shouldn't have to pay taxes to help other people.

I also find it telling how the framing of "get ahead" is often used for this.

it's actually a pretty accurate way of thinking about capitalism: in order to "get ahead", it's necessary that there are many people for you to be ahead of. it's essentially another way of phrasing what I said in post 30

Those with an intrinsic motivation and those with extrinsic

If you want to correlate success, intrinsic folks are usually the most successful. You are clearly extrinsic.

Extrinsic people take zero accountability. The universe "happens" to them. They are a bystander.

Intrinsic people "make" things happen. Hawking was very intrinsic. He drove his success.

Extrinsic people succeed only through chance and lottery. Otherwise they wait for good things to happen and usually die in the process, cursing others who succeeded the whole time.
