While the plot of the John Wick movies may be bare bones and just a vehicle for him to kill people the actual filmmaking techniques are phenomenal. The cinematography and directing is extremely high quality and the stunt work is some of the best since the Hong Kong action films of the 90s.
yeah. the fight scenes are pretty great, and everything is really visually interesting. I rewatched the first three before seeing 4 in theatres. one thing that really stood out to me was how colourful they manage to be despite being (for the most part) very dark.

Keanu Reeves is great at movement and physical acting, though his line delivery is rather weak and stilted for the most part. fortunately there are supporting actors like Laurence Fishburne (who I would legitimately love to see as like, King Lear or something) to balance it out.

the long bird's-eye shot near the end of 4 might be my favourite single shot in the whole series

okay.

When was the last time you saw an author do this as such to describe a character solely to explain that they were white?
again, I don't know and I don't care. the inclusion of the word "solely" is quite disingenuous though; since "white face" very clearly has more than one connotation.

This isn't hard to understand. White authors have the habit of not describing their characters skin color or race unless they specifically are non-white. It's a tendency to default to the majority race of where they came from. If you read a book written by a white author from the western hemisphere, and they do not describe a character's skin color, there's a good chance the author intended for them to be white. Doubly so if they describe other characters as a minority.
I care even less what the author intended. you can't actually know what someone else intended; it's almost always more fruitful to ignore it. I'm talking about the actual words that are present in the text, and their implications. that's what I care about in this context.

to reiterate:
  1. if a character is not specified to be white, it is generally not a good idea to assume they are.
  2. referring to a character's "white face", while generally used to indicate fear, does, in fact, carry connotations beyond fear.

you're turning this conversation into one about an individual's subjective experiences of reading a book. feel free to have it with someone else; I'm completely uninterested in it in this context. landlord is not a job; it's a position. it doesn't require them to do anything; only that they own the building.

barista, meanwhile, is an actual job.

I will say that, on the whole, I don't think tipping should be a thing -- it's the employer's responsibility to pay their employees enough to live on; not the clientele.

I'll also say that which jobs receive tips is also quite arbitrary. but again, "barista" is a job and "landlord" isn't

not 100% sure what that person was talking about, but there was a Harry Potter stage production in which a black woman was cast as Hermione. Rowling basically said that she didn't have an issue with it.

there's a fair bit of stuff in the books that is... significantly more troubling if Hermione is black though. like Malfoy calling her a mudblood.

at my elementary school each class sang a song at the christmas concert and the spring concert at the end of the year -- granted, it was a tiny rural school with split classes, so they still weren't all that long.

from middle school onward, concerts like that were pretty much just for band/choir, and sometimes for other people who wanted to do a solo act or something. my high school generally had a variety show in the auditorium on the last day of classes in december where people just signed up.

I guess for the most part, I was rather neutral on the experience as a whole.

but also, education is still important whether or not any individual person enjoys one specific aspect of it

there are very few scenarios where you actually have to use someone's name when talking directly to them. it's fairly common to greet someone with "hi Alice" or whatever but you can just as easily leave out their name because the name is implied.

similar to how someone's pronouns (he, she, they, etc.) are only relevant when you're talking to other people about that person; not when talking directly to that person. because "you" is generally used when talking directly to them
