Let's be honest here.

People calling to ban social media because adults can't raise their kids properly is the new "ban violent games"

Im no expert but I feel like like social media is a hell of a double edged sword that isnt really comparable to video games

that said its too ubiquitous to ban so lol at that idea gaining meaningful traction

I don't want my children to think their Instagram/TikTok/whatever clout is a measure of their value.

Social Media is a double edged sword. One, it can spread info quickly, expose abusers easily, and help us find resources faster. On the other hand, info overload is a real problem, misinformation gets spread easier, and garbo social media like Tiktok and Twitter and the like,

I wouldn't go as far as banning social media, but I'd be up for restricting it to be 18+

Bad comparison imo. It's not the content of social media that people are concerned about per se, it's the unhealthy usage habits. Video games don't cause violence, but there's also nobody who would recommend that kids play them for 12 hours a day while getting most of their social interaction through them.

I think the better comparison is fast food - a technological wonder at the time of its inception that people only realize the health consequences of overconsuming decades later.

yeah I agree with this very much; though it's not the extent of my thoughts.

it's also damaging people's attention spans. tiktok, notably, is basically automated channel surfing, except most of the channels are just people doing dances to pop songs while text appears on the screen saying some shit like "here are 6 reasons why women belong in the kitchen"

Or at least tie it to the age of consent. Seems like they should be required to legally consent to getting fucked like that.

How many people are actually calling for it to be banned? I've only seen it used as an off-handed remark.

But a lot of social media stupidity is from 18+ people.

Except social media is actually a cancer on society. Video games are hella fun distractions.

Social Media is a great tool that should be accessible for everyone. Everyone should be extremely worried when the government is trying to ban a form of wide-spread speech that costs nothing, and isn't controlled by them.

Without social media, as bad as things may seem, our government could hide and do a lot worse.

It's not social media that's the problem, it's how people consume media in general. Hear a bit of information that resonates with you, that information is now something you know, and it further shapes or likely reinforces your worldview. People don't take time to understand what they hear. Now people just scream slogans and platitudes, then jam a meme in your face. - that's winning.

I think TC is right as some of the argent mentioned here mimic the same arguments people made against video games, television, radio, etc. I do believe there are distinct challenges with social media, especially with regards to teen girls, but that's why there should be more regulations, better moderation of content, and increased education about proper social media use.

There's also a level of hypocrisy to the responses in this topic when many people here are using this board which is social media, created their accounts twenty years ago (me included), and have a hundred active posts.

Yet the second article I cited from CNN actually states the use of social media for Black and Brown teens is seen as a greater positive for those demographic groups. The only peer reviewed research I have seen that has shown a strong correlation between poor mental health and increased social media use ends up being for teenage girls.

I'm just saying, social media isn't harmful, it's just an indication that we need to start adapting differently. We're still stuck in the idea that communications should be done like it was in the 50's, and we need to raise ourselves to that.

Kids are growing up to have a warped version of what reality is thanks to social media.

Social media can be harmful but not in ways that justify banning them entirely. The tough part that people don't want to hear is that if social media is causing you problems, the onus is on you to do something about how you use it or interpret things on it. Like if you feel bad about your friends achieving things you're not, you need to learn how to not compare yourself to them or other people in general

I agree that individuals should always take responsibility for what goes on in their lives, but at what point do we acknowledge how powerful outside forces are and that some people are not equipped to handle defending themselves? I just finished watching this before I saw your post

How the US as a whole has been rapidly increasing in size over the decades. Is personal responsibility really the answer to this problem that is created, perpetuated, and exacerbated by companies lobbying the government to rewrite health codes in their favor and spending almost $5 Billion in advertising?

There are a lot of concerns that need to be addressed when it comes to social media's role in society and the accountability of service providers, but "ban social media'' is about as silly as saying "ban the internet"
