Super Metroid was mediocre.

!

I guess I can see being frustrated by the controls. (although honestly one of the major things that makes nintendo games good is usually their correct approach of making the controls 'deep'. almost every nintendo game has extremely fine tuned and intricately thought out movement, even to the point of giving each individual game its own unique feel.)

but as far as the atmosphere and gameplay... Super Metroid does so many things so well that no other game that I've ever played has even approached in terms of quality. If you're aware of any games that do it better, let me know so I can play them.

modern/recent/nostalgia-free top 10 list would be something like:

Factorio - probably my actively favorite game, though 0.15 made the game a little bit too tedious for my liking
Dark Souls 1 - probably the best game ever made, period. gesamtkunstwerk.
DOOM 2016
Might and Magic X
Dungeon of the Endless
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky - best written game I've ever played
Europa Universalis 4 - love everything about it, but I'm not very good at it
Endless Legend - not perfect, but could be the funnest 4x game I've ever played
Wolfenstein: The New Order - gameplay is so-so, but way makes up for it in cinematic narrative
Kerbal Space Program (I suck at it though)

Runners up include:
Dark Souls 3 - LOVE the game, but I think I don't enjoy it as much as I could because it's too hard (I did beat it twice)
FTL
Crashlands

also, I'm currently playing and enjoying both Overwatch and WoW, but somehow I don't think they belong on this list

I mean, I "want" save anywhere. but I do appreciate save points too. depends on the game but all or most of our power in video games comes from our ability to time-travel using the save system and we barely pay any attention to it. save points mean that the dev has actually taken that into account and designed the game at least partially around the concept, which is ostensibly better, but who knows what the best solution is. I guess it depends on the type of game, too.

For years Blizzard denied there would be interest in such a thing

I agree with most of what you said, since yes, that's how managers think and managers make the decisions, not actual creators. (not sure about the suing part; Bethesda seems to have a legal department that is desperate to justify its own existence, but I'm not sure about Activision).

but to be fair, what they would have most likely specifically said here (I presume) is not that there would be no interest, but that there wouldn't be enough interest to justify the costs. I don't know if that's true or not, but it is true that the managers will always be thinking in terms of margins.

- which is actually the best looking city, regardless of the images which are just examples
- based on these images, which of these cities has specifically the best looking skyline, regardless what the city otherwise looks like

well, I'm being generous since that's an understandable mistake. the alternative is just ignorance by itself.

I'm fine with language evolving over time, but the -itis/-itus thing annoys me a bit since saying it that way makes it sound like it's related to inflammation when it's not, and the origin of the word is clearly not pronounced that way. it's a mispronunciation that can carry misinformation with it.

Yes. I don't get it all the time, but it is a lot. I've also started getting Visual Migraines recently. It was very close to this video I found on youtube. I had it happen twice the other day.

I've had this on two separate occasions. I assumed they were migraines but wasn't sure, but now I know, thanks.

it was basically that exact shape, but it wasn't bright colors. it started at a point and radiated outwards slowly over time till eventually it was a big curve like that. the curve would drift slowly. it was really annoying when it crossed over the center point of my vision, since then I couldn't read for a few minutes.

the zigzag pattern was more like composed of little triangles which had their image data flipped. it's a little unnerving because you don't normally think of your vision as a computer or a hardware device like a monitor, but it seems exactly like having a hardware problem.

I don't know if I think it's the best, but when I watched some of it like a decade ago I was generally impressed by the plot of each episode, at least in terms of drama and action. TNG maybe had a lot more philosophically interesting stories, but were often a bit weaker in other areas or even felt a bit silly (definitely not always). (and then, maybe that's how it's supposed to be; that certainly fits the original series: a little silly but still philosophically interesting)

Well, I'm drunk, so the finer nuances of my way of programming doesn't exactly come out clearly. But yeah. Anyone can really make anything, they just have to break it down further and further. A lot of the times I decide what I want to do next, and then might make a seperate program just for the purpose of that portion. Once I figur ei tout, I incorporate it back into the main design.

one of the main things is to maintain a library and extract problems that you solve up into your libraries so that you can reuse your solutions. anything that you ever have to think about, extract it out for reuse. constantly be on the lookout for things you hate doing, and make a function or class to do it for you so you never have to think about it again. do this enough times and problems start to be easier and easier to solve.

(long as I'm rambling about this, as an aside, I will mention that one thing to avoid if possible with GUI applications are designers that hide the GUI code. what you want is to be able to write your own GUI code that still shows up visually somewhere, especially as you type it. designers that hide the GUI code from you prevent you from ever applying iterative refinement to it. (I've actually written my own scripting language for this purpose which allows me to generate complex nigh-perfect GUI layouts with almost no effort. this is completely impossible to do when the designer forces you not to code.))

it used to be convention to say FF3 or FF3j. these days, we've just started calling them by their proper numbers (FF3 is now implied to be FF3j; SNES FF3 is FF6.)

Another way to learn if raw study doesn't appeal. Pick a language that seems to do things you want to do, and then pick a simple project you want to accomplish. Learn the commands as you need them to finish your project.

this is really good advice. IMO 99% of learning to program is being given a task and working on it. CompSci lectures are very often boring, what I always really wanted was just to get to the damn assignments.

well, it translates to 'actually being scared of something' for me. there are also explanations in the game that the feelings of paranoia and being easily startled are a side effect of the evil energies that are present there. it's an unbelievably intense experience if you can immerse yourself in it.

as someone with anxiety problems, in fact I actually find it helpful in a sort of therapeutic way. being that intensely afraid in a controlled way allows you to experience those levels of extreme fear and get used to them or force yourself to work through them.
