Deaths are starting to creep up (at least in the US). Not as strongly as case numbers are (yesterday's 7-day daily case average was 110,000, compared to 20,000 a month prior, while yesterday's death average was 516, compared to 205 a month prior), but a delay is to be expected because it tends not to kill people immediately after diagnosis. I doubt deaths will end up spiking as hard as cases do, in the long run, but that's mostly because some of those cases are vaccinated people that are vastly less likely to die. I don't think it indicates much about Delta's deadliness.
yeah, it's not enough to actually get to "delta is definitely less deadly", but there are noticeably fewer deaths now in this current wave. some other possible reasons have been posted by others.

in europe in particular, you can see a very clear pattern of three waves (and as I want to describe this I find that johns hopkins has limited their scale to only past month now? so I can't see this data anymore):

(just going from memory)
early/mid 2020: high cases, high deaths
late 2020/early 2021: high cases, medium deaths
mid 2021: high cases, low deaths

the two scales are not the same, so you can't compare them directly, but looking at the relative size of each wave, the number of additional deaths for this current wave is basically zero compared to the others.

as for why that is, who knows.

reading wiki, it's supposed to be particularly addictive. so, that's kind of all you need.

if you're not aware, (and also, as far as I know...), addictive substances affect your brain in such a way as to reinforce the mental pathways that led to the effect. so, the mental pathways that are involved in whatever (bad) decisions you made that led you to that moment are strengthened, increasing the chance that you'll make similar decisions again. basically, they are behaviourally self-reinforcing. it's almost like a weird kind of time-travel, or evolution, or virus, or something, where a substance can change the future by altering the minds of those who take it. it propagates its own existence (or... consumption) by reprogramming people's behaviour to increase tendency to take more of it. (basically it's a kind of "strange loop" (feedback loop)).

crack I guess has more potent effects, regardless of the duration, so this feedback loop is particularly strong. (ie: you're asking this question as if it's a rational decision to become addicted, but it's not, it's behavioural.)

supposedly covid itself already gives high chances of things like blood clots, so protecting yourself from covid, even with a tiny chance of that, is statistically worth it

(thing with covid is that it can attack cells that we're not really used to having attacked, including things like capillaries and blood vessels, and it's also not entirely understood all of the negative effects it can have.)

the cons to getting covid are extremely high:
- turns you into a coronavirus factory, very likely spreading it to others (allowing the chain to continue)
- can allow it to mutate within you or others
- can definitely kill you outright or otherwise permanently damage you
pros: essentially none

the cons to the vaccine:
- might have an insignificant chance of dangerous side effects
pros: the reverse of all of the covid cons

TopicDo ya think immortals could get, like, stage 6 cancer?

cancer kind of is immortality. if you could make yourself immortal, you would probably just die extremely soon of mass cancer. the frailty effect of aging is actually our biological resistance to cancer (or one of them).

it should be theoretically possible to become both immortal and cancer resistant/immune, but it won't be easy since they're so closely related.

(and it may be that to be immortal and also cancer free would require giving up regeneration altogether, since that's really where it comes from. the parts of you that regenerate are more cancer prone. the parts of you that are more cancer resistant also don't really heal properly (like your heart).)

Why would you want cake if not to eat it though
you could eat it now, or you could it eat later; you could give it to someone else, or you could trade it to someone else.

the term for this in economics is opportunity cost. if you spend a resource one way, you forego all of the other ways that you could have spent it. so, the cost of that option is actually more than just the value of the resource. and not having spent the resource yet is a considerably more advantageous position to be in than having spent it.

k but it's still being re-discovered and implemented in society

Lokarin posted...
Sorta, but not in the way I meant. The magic in FF6 already pre-exists and is merely granted to the player characters through the magicite and minor grind.
well magic has to exist in the world in some way to begin with. it can't be introduced from nothing. magic is a force of nature, and spellcasting is harnessing that force. (right, like you could talk about "the invention of electricity". that doesn't mean we created electricity from scratch; rather, we discovered its existence, the rules about how it works, methods to harness it in useful ways, etc.)

FF6 (and some other square games as well) is specifically about the society discovering magic as a force of nature (albeit from an alternate dimension) and coming up with ways of harnessing it.

aw I actually own and like LotR, but I haven't played it in decades (I beat it once a very long time ago)

my vote for bad SNES RPG would probably be Nobunaga's Ambition: Lord of Darkness (or not, see below), a KOEI RPG. I love their strategy games, but I could never get very far in this game, and it felt clunky and terrible back then, when I already played and enjoyed their other clunky but great games like Uncharted Waters.

(it is possible that it's good once you get into it but I never got into it)

(EDIT: looking it up, Nobunaga's Ambition isn't even the game I remember. The game I'm thinking of is actually Inindo: Way of the Ninja)

another one might be Tecmo Secret of the Stars, but I can't remember enough about it

The closest analogy I can think of is something like a Sniper rifle
I guess head shots in general: lower chance to hit, but guaranteed crit (not exactly the same since "chance to hit" will usually be determined by player skill rather than RNG in an FPS game)

I'm starting to think that "health" is such an extremely overused game mechanic. if I was designing something from scratch, one of the things I would start with is to find a more interesting system than the usual health and death one that almost every game has.

TopicWhen you enter a highway from an acceleration ramp, should you signal?
Sahuagin
07/30/21 1:32:24 AM
#4
if you have a "you get your own lane" sign, no

if you have a merge sign, yes

(the general rule is going to be: signal before entering a new lane, regardless of the situation)

a yield sign I'm not sure, and in some cases you might even signal the opposite way (since you'd be "turning" right). (I may have this wrong.)

another thing I'm not clear on (and all of this will vary by jurisdiction so it's not really that useful to ask here since we're from all over the place), is the difference between: a sign that says "Merge", a sign that has an arrow formed from two lines (like an upside down y pointing up), and a sign that shows a lane ending. I have heard that a "lane ending" sign does not necessarily mean "merge", and in some places there would be no right of way given to the ending lane traffic. (where I am, in a merge, vehicles share right-of-way. this is not the case in most places though as far as I know. and I don't know if it applies in a "lane ending" situation.)

heheh, oh yes you most certainly can - infact it makes bosses entirely trivial
hmmm.

in SoM, bosses can only be hit once every few seconds, and only on particular frames (many of them have a "shield" that you can't see that makes them immune to attack in certain directions or at certain times)

not to mention that your character also needs to recharge their attack

(ok now that I think of it, yes you can totally do it with magic since you can stop time with magic and there are no similar protections to it)

in the game I saw (Legends of Mana I guess) you could just walk up to any enemy or boss and attack normally, and it would stun lock them if you just kept going. it was very obvious and easy to do.

but yeah, I guess that is similar to magic in SoM where if you just use magic at normal strength you annihilate any boss.
