no... I appreciate what he does, but he's a little *too* obsessed with focusing on problems in the game industry. like, ok, there are problems, maybe there are a lot of problems, but where's the good stuff?

I think the only good counterexample I have though is quill18. he genuinely loves gaming, with deep complex games in particular. just about any game he plays is probably worth playing for some reason or another.

there's also Extra Credits, I guess, obviously

In summary there appears to be at least 18 gun incidents in, or around, schools between 1st January and 14th February 2018. They are not all of the "mass shooting" variety one might expect from the headlines but they have certainly all involved the accidental or intentional letting off of a firearm.

guns are more important than the lives of the kids

I think you said this sarcastically, but the problem I think is that *this really is the position that pro-gun people hold*.

it's very hard to argue these deep ideologically driven positions. you expect people to follow what you see as a rational logical set of steps (too many guns -> innocents killed -> stricter rules around guns -> etc.), but when there's something so basic that's so fundamentally different (lives are more important than guns VS guns are more important than lives), it just doesn't work.

don't stop trying necessarily, but at some point you do have to realize that you live in a country that values guns more than lives. that's just what the USA *is*.

article's freaking long. some thoughts from a short skim of the content:

- seems suspiciously like deciding on a conclusion and then looking for evidence to support it, rather than the other way around

- reminded of atheism. the concept only needs to exist insofar as it's a counter-position to theism. the same I think is true of homosexuality VS heterosexuality. they each need to make themselves distinct from the other. so over time they both grow in strength. but just because the terms didn't exist before doesn't mean that the underlying points of view didn't. heterosexuality was more or less just taken for granted, like many concepts in the world before we understood them or thought about them.

acceleration takes into account mass, so the smaller cart is accelerated more than the larger cart. but momentum takes mass into account too... so I guess it cancels out. the smaller cart is more "affected", but the momentum change is the same. the smaller cart is moving faster, but has less mass.

one thing I don't like about the question is the phrasing "For the time interval where the two carts are in contact". an instant in time is not really an interval; delta-t would be zero. I guess the interval must be from before there was collision to immediately after the collision?

the more I think of it, the more it makes sense that whatever the first two numbers are, they must be the same. impulse is like accumulating force. it's going to be a vector in the same direction as the force, just a question of magnitude. (think of a space vehicle in orbit. apply thrust, that is your force. the impulse is the accumulation of that force in the direction(s) that it is applied.)

for the magnitude of the impulse... it seems like it might be double or half. I'm a bit confused now by the phrasing "impulse of" VS "impulse on".

I'm not sure of the formulas and wording, but I think that cart 1 has (or applies) twice the force of cart 2. cart 1 receives half the force that cart 2 receives. (call velocity 1 unit, then force is 500 and 250 or something like that.) they are affected for the same duration, so cart 2 will have its momentum modified by twice what cart 1's momentum is modified by. my intuition is that cart 1's velocity would be halved (-250 units), whereas cart 2's velocity would be reversed (-500 units).

am now reading about Newton's third law... seems to say that really they both get the sum of the forces or something, so in that case, it would be 750 units each? or whatever the value is, they'd have the same force applied, their own reversed at them, plus the other's. "impulse of" VS "impulse on" wouldn't matter, they both had the same force applied, and their momentums would have undergone similar modifications (just opposite directions). that feels counter-intuitive though. a semi-truck hitting a motor-cycle doesn't have its own force reflected back at it...

yeah from the little I've read (I don't even have grade 10 physics) I don't see how that could be correct. impulse is supposed to be a measurement of how much the force modified the momentum. 3 seems to mean that the momentum of cart 1 increased to the right? that can't be the case. the momentum of cart 1 is moved to the left, not the right.

no, cocoa/fruity pebbles used to be, I think, little spherical balls. (right, like pebbles.) kind of like cocoa puffs, but way smaller. I can't find any evidence of it though so far. anything old enough that it might show the old version is too low res to make out what it actually looks like.

wiki says:
The Canadian version came in the form of corn puffs in Pebble shapes.

so, I guess that might explain it

this happens in reverse, too, though. I guess especially in canada though, where we have that foreign worker thing. at the Tim Horton's I go to, they used to have a single employee running the whole store all night, and she barely spoke english.

I had to give up once because she couldn't figure out what I was asking for. another time she was so overwhelmed, I suggested I should probably go pull my car ahead to wait for my sandwich. 10 mins later, I went into the store and stood patiently where she's still barely able to cope with all the orders. 5 mins later she finally looks at me, gives me a look of surprise/recognition, and hands me my sandwich.

maybe since they can't legally marry the same guy, but if they're going to do anything together it's going to be a three-way (even non-sexually) they must just basically have a "polygamous" "marriage" in practice, but legally only one of them can actually marry the guy

^I guess "tune" can be considered another alternative. I personally just say "track" usually while conveniently almost never discussing remixes.

yeah but "track" implies a recording, even maybe specifically a record, but at least a "chunk" of some kind of playback media like a cassette tape. doesn't that have the same issue as "song" (technically inaccurate but everyone basically knows what you mean)?

"tune" still seems to refer to the melody in particular

I want a word that says "this whole piece of music, abstracted from any particular version". a guess is that due to the absence of such a word, everyone ends up unconsciously selecting one to use for that purpose; in my case I use "song".

I just don't like the style, and I don't tend to like shrill high pitch grating music. another game that's like that where the music is probably well written and enjoyable musically, but it's so shrill I can't enjoy it comfortably, is Cave Story.

I guess an exception to that though is NES Mega Man music, which can be pretty shrill but I still tend to enjoy it. I know I like electronic music, so maybe that is why.
