doesn't a minimum wage basically say that low-paying jobs are not allowed to exist? it doesn't really mean that low paying jobs will pay more, it means those jobs will just be removed as options if at all possible, or made more complex or require more experience or effort.

(I guess in other words, very theoretically, it should increase unemployment, though also increase the value of employment. employment is more valuable but harder to get. something like that.)

the development of a battery using new technology
while better battery tech is definitely something important to have, there's kind of a limit on how much energy density you can achieve, and even if you increase the energy density, it means that you have even more volatile substances.

Smarkil posted...
That's the biggest issue we have with renewable resources like solar and wind - they're inconsistent. They potentially can generate all the power we need, but as soon as the sun goes down or the wind stops we effectively have nothing.
rather than "batteries" there are forms of large-scale energy storage. pumping entire lakes of water up into a reservior that can then flow back down later running hydro generators, or lifting heavy weights. (one energy storage plant just lifts and stacks concrete blocks into a tower, and then lowers them one by one when energy is needed.)

(supposedly almost all of the world's energy storage uses the pumped hydro idea, but you need the right terrain to make it possible. the stacked blocks idea is new and hopefully something that can be more widely used.)

doesn't have to be. seems more like a problem of lack of imagination. Pestilence in particular could make a great class.

Famine is a bit more difficult; it's too narrow of a concept. maybe you could broaden it away from specifically being about food and make it more about scarcity in general? I don't know the gameplay or setting, but there could be "iron famine" to damage armor and weapons, "malnutrition" to debuff a living creature, "calcium deficiency" against skeletons, etc.? that would make for a really weird class and it might be too much like Pestilence. maybe Pestilence could focus on DoTs and Famine could focus on sapping/debuffs. maybe Famine is really weak, but he has so many debuffs that it doesn't matter (wouldn't work if you could team up).

also on one of my SNESs for some reason the mother brain fight had really messed up graphics (and IIRC it wasn't just limited to graphics, parts of the mother brain were in the wrong place, and you would take extreme damage for hitting disembodied pieces of her.) when I switched systems, the other system didn't have that problem.

I think it varies with the device at the location. some locations it always works. some locations, as you say, it works half the time and half the time it makes you use the chip instead. (it's possible those locations might have a tap limit set, so if you order more than $20 or something, it makes you use the chip instead.)

A normal C# project compiles to a .dll file, and the dll is copied to projects that reference that project. A long standing problem with VS is that other "content" files do not get copied. So you can't reference a project to gain access to its files, it only gets a copy of the output dll. This means that you can't reference things like XNA content, or web related files (.js/.html/.css etc.).

You can sort of work around this with linked files, but it's hard to maintain and would sometimes conflict. You can also write your own pre/post-build copy commands to move files, but that's also hard to maintain.

So a new solution to this problem are "shared projects" which basically end up just merging right into projects that reference them, as if it was a part of that project. You then get copies of the files in that project as if they were a part of your project, allowing you to push non-C# files into one reusable place, add references, and make use of them in many places. (And yeah, as usual with MS, it's sort of a hack fix o a problem that could really use a way better solution.)

Anyway

Now that I have things in the right place, I'm not as eager to make those two changes, though I do feel like that's the right direction to go architecturally (but it's definitely a soft suggestion at most; I don't want to mess up your project)

I'm not sure what you mean about the shared project. The main difference is that a shared project sort of bakes right into a project that references it as if those code files were a part of the referencing project, rather than a class library where the code compiles to a dll (assembly) and then is loaded at runtime. (I suppose a practical difference there would be that a shared project reference increases the size of the referencing projects output file, and a class library reference splits it into a separate dll, which then has to be loaded.)

for the second point, I think ideally there should be one repo that lets you get up and running. an end user can reference any of the projects they want from a new separate solution, but the repo itself should (theoretically/IMO) have a single solution that builds and runs (or even contains multiple executable projects).

I don't want to stomp all over your design though; I'm going to try to be extremely cautious. the point for me is the learning experience of working on someone else's code and particularly doing so without causing any problems for them.

I did some basic cleaning, but gonna try to take this slow, whereas my instinct would normally be to just change everything I see whenever I see it

before I go over everything I think I need to change the structure a bit

here's what I want to do, but it's up to you:

- the shared library should just be for the content, not all of your code. I will split it apart and make a class library for the code part of it (and later probably splitting that apart based on dependency.)

- the solution is not buildable unless I add the editor project, but that project is not in the repo. I will add the editor project to the UI repo so that that solution will build. (may try merging the repo in with git, but I'm not a git expert and I don't want to make a mess.)

let me know if I'm being too intrusive

I'm maybe/probably going to try doing a pass over all the code files, I just wanted to make sure we're on the same page first before I start changing things.

I'm not sure about the indents. I feel like I shouldn't change it all to 3 spaces just because I like it. the braces at least I think would be an improvement in a lot of places but the tab size is a bit more personal preference. and reading it sounds like 4 is standard in a lot of places. so I might keep it at 4.

tempted to go through this and clean it up a bunch. not used to programming with others though, so there would instantly be the issue of conventions.

my conventions that conflict would be:
I use size 3 tabs, but you have 4 (forgot about tabs versus spaces; I use 3 spaces, you use 4 spaces)
I use (dunno the name but looks like it's 1TBS) style (ie: braces on same line), this is all K&R style (braces on separate line, vertically aligned)
I use var when possible but it seems like you avoid it intentionally?

can I use 3 spaces for indents, or should I stick with 4 spaces?
can I use 1TBS style, or should I stick with K&R?
can I use var?

(I guess not to imply that you *have* to take my changes or anything; but either way, there should be agreement on conventions)

removing duplication is almost always a good thing. (though, that's duplication of logic, not duplication of structure.)

if there are performance issues, use a profiler. sometimes things are slow for a reason you would never have guessed. a profiler will tell you the exact place(s) in your code that are taking the most time to execute. (if this is graphics related though it may not be so straight forward as that.)

the article doesn't mention it but what you theoretically need is to reverse or delay telomere shortening.

basically, (to over-simplify) cancer is caused by the fact that we have regeneration (cancer is out-of-control regeneration), so to prevent that we have natural "time to live" counters (telomeres) that limit the number of times cells can split so that regeneration can't happen forever. this helps protect us from cancer but curses us with biological aging.

the problems are:
- if you do actually reverse or get rid of the "time to live" mechanism (and there are ways of doing so), you tend to end up significantly more vulnerable to cancer (in fact, that is often *why* people get cancer: because something like that happened in some of your tissues, and now those tissues are regenerating without bound). (though there are animals that are resistant to cancer despite also avoiding telomere shortening, so it's not strictly impossible to achieve.)

- as I often point out, even if you get rid of biological aging, you can't get rid of temporal aging. a lot of getting old is just wear and tear and poor maintenance of your body. making as healthy choices as you can will definitely help but that doesn't mean you're going to live 50% longer than anyone ever has before. I don't think people that live to 100+ are even necessarily those particular people that lived the healthiest lives.

it's being actively updated

it's more stable, secure, and faster; it just feels lighter in general, especially compared to 7 (and I loved 7)

it allows multiple users to be logged in simultaneously (previously a feature of windows server only; not sure exactly when introduced to workstation windows though, might have already been a feature since some other version)

as much as I don't like the push to metro, I do find the minimal interface more appealing in many cases

searching from the start menu (after turning off cortana and internet searching as much as possible) is very fast and quick way to launch things

something more specific, I recently learned that users can install fonts to their profile, rather than having to install them to the system. that's pretty great since fonts have always been such a low level part of the o/s but at the same time are something that should be a lot more flexible since they're so important.
