most places I've seen don't consistently cut their pizza in any way. it's 8 or more slices of varying size. some of them can be only a couple inches wide at the crust, even.

but I think generally a "pizza slice" would be considered 1/8th of a pizza.

Let's say there are fifty studs in the tread aloud the edge of the tire just to make the math simple. Because there are fifty identical positions, it could rotate as little as 7.2 degrees per frame to match the frame rate of the camera. That's only 30 rpm. And the wheel could turn any multiple of 7.2 degrees to reach another identical position. So any multiple of 30 rpm would make the studs on the tread appear motionless. 150 rpm is around 10-12 mph depending on the diameter of the tire.
yeah k. I think I'm underestimating the speed of a camera shutter, and the visual similarity of the wheel from frame to frame. compression might be involved but now I have no idea to what degree if any.

Compression wouldn't cause this at all. <snip>

why not? that's exactly the kind of thing compression does to simplify the image to compress it.

here's an example. things to notice include:
  • the edges of the back wheel of the other bike are almost but not quite stationary, while the middle of the wheel is very clearly in motion. this is because the pattern on the edge repeats, and the compression is turning something that's "pretty close" to something that's exact. the middle of the tire is messy enough that the pattern doesn't repeat frame to frame, so the compression ignores it.
  • even better, at times the rubber on the top of his front tire appears completely motionless. this isn't (just) because it's in synch with the camera, it's because the image on each frame look "pretty close" to the compression, so it converts it into something that's exact frame to frame.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBUJtUKk5KA&t=25m22s

for the helicopter, you're not literally getting raw frames that look identical frame to frame, you're getting frames that look similar frame to frame and the compression converts it into something that looks identical.

try to sit with your weight on your thighs and/or ass cheeks. don't slouch, or if you do sit sideways so your weight isn't directly on your asscrack.

use a softer seat (sit on a pillow or blanket)

if it starts to get a little sore, don't ignore it. if it gets bad enough it can hurt an insane amount.

pretty sure it's more related to compression and/or image stabilizing. I saw a similar effect watching a bicycle video where the front tire appeared to almost be motionless except for turning forward an inch or two once every few seconds. the speed of the tire should be fluctuating a lot, so it's not synchronized with the camera. the compression on the video is just reducing something that is otherwise super hard to compress due to the amount of noise involved into something extremely easy to compress since it's no longer moving frame to frame.

Eh, I feel like it's unreasonable to set the bar at those extremes, especially where that depends so much on the style of gameplay. With turn-based games in particular, beating the game at level 1 may well be mathematically impossible (i.e. you deal less than 10 damage and the boss has 15 additive defense, or the boss unavoidably deals more damage than level 1 characters have health)
yes, 1 and 100 are just examples.

_AdjI_ posted...
not necessarily that skill can be a complete substitute for having any levels at all. Take it that far, and you risk losing all sense of meaningful progression (which is a bad thing).
yes, take it too far and you risk becoming an action game.

dark souls in particular seems to have somehow captured this better than any other game I can think of. the game is beatable at level 1, you gain very noticeable improvements at every level, yet you can still be killed pretty easily by most enemies, even at high levels.

I meant non-phoenix Jean Grey. There has been times when Magneto is trying to push metal objects towards Jean Grey and she can stop it with just telekinesis. Anikin has telekinesis. To pull his lightsaber from him wouldn't work cause he could just stop it. That is something Jedi and Sith train to do so their counterparts can't just yank their saber away from them using the force.

Magneto can do things like: lift football stadiums, lift submarines, fly, move asteroids, tear open trains, hold a falling jet in place with its engines running, etc.

Vader can do things like: choke someone a few feet away, throw large containers around

AllstarSniper32 posted...
Those don't seem like something magnetism should be able to do.

it can make Magneto overpowered fast if you take it too far, but manipulation of magnetism would actually be more powerful than Magneto is usually shown. Electromagnetism is what holds matter together, it's why objects are solid, it's why light shines and travels. pretty much all macro-level physical phenomena are a result of electromagnetism. the only things that don't apply are nuclear forces and gravity.

a lot of these kinds of adapters don't work as well as you might hope. they can work, but they can also be unreliable. the best solution would be to find the best quality output to input match between your device and TV and try to find a single cable for it. but it depends on the device and TV.

The exploration and rewards of failure made sure that you were the appropriate level when you beat Dragon Quest. The developers planned the XP and gold curves around an expected level of failure... this is a standard thing in designing RPGs.
truly well-designed RPGs/games should be as little like that as possible. a truly great game is beatable at level 1, and still somewhat challenging at level 100, while nevertheless still giving a full sense of progression in between.

it's not easy to do; dark souls and rogue-likes are what come to mind as examples. the game mechanics have to be rich enough for it to be possible.

games where the difficulty scale is so narrow that 1 level makes the difference between impossible and possible, and another level makes the difference between possible and cake-walk are bad games that have turned the game mechanics into, as you say, gate-keeping systems. the designer is attempting to control the player rather than creating deep and meaningful game systems and then presenting the player with equally rich challenges to overcome.

games like you're describing are reducible to that RPG sim where you're walking on a line fighting battles over and over.

(I wouldn't be complaining about this except that you started off describing grinding as a solution to bad design, and then presented this as "good" design, which it definitely is not to me. grinding is a solution to the player's lack of ability to win a scenario. if the player's skill and knowledge of the game is completely irrelevant to winning the scenario, that is bad design, and then yes, grinding is then transitively a solution to bad design.)

I've done this write up countless times, but it all dates back to Dragon Quest 1. If you are playing the game as intended, exploring and dying, you will be the right level when you get to the end.

BUT, if you've played the game before and are savvy enough to skip all the dead ends, you'll be a good 4~6 levels SHORT of the game being possible.

The game was designed with your failures in mind, which is why you keep all your XP but only half your gold - so that you are appropriately gatekeep'd based on how you explore.
I would call this bad design. what makes RPGs so widely popular is that they effectively have dynamic difficulty. you can make the game as easy or hard on yourself as you want, and in the best of these games, that scale will be extremely broad. when that scale is extremely narrow (close to impossible if you're a little under-leveled, and either OPd if you're a little over-leveled, or else it's impossible to be over-leveled), that is bad design. that whole system might almost as well not even be in the game.

But that was coupled with the fact that he had to use it on a half day, as well. It's just a case of a shitty boss...
well it definitely sucks, but I'm not aware of any rules that are being violated (not that I'm an HR expert, though I do work with this kind of info a lot). the 3 hour rule is for hourly workers. as a salaried employee, the "free day off" thing is just -8 hours that you are expected to accumulate. whether you're at work already or not doesn't matter.
