I had one package that made it half way to me and then just stopped. weeks passed, and it didn't move. Phoned about it and then it started moving the next day and after a couple more days was delivered. So I guess it fell behind a desk, or put in the wrong box, or somehow got left behind and forgotten.

...that was the selling point that got most people interested. Whether or not the gimmick was the thing you focused on doesn't change that it's a gimmick. Even if you liked the Wii for something other than its motion controls, that doesn't change that the motion controls were a primary selling point.

motion controls are a gimmick; they sound great in principle, and are good in the right context (Wii Sports) but don't actually work well as a general game input scheme.

I never saw the first-person-ness of MP as a selling point, it was just how they did it. it could have been good or bad. If that's how you see it though I can't disagree.

Melee built on SSB mechanically, and not just a little, but significantly. Brawl didn't build on Melee mechanically at all, it regressed mechanically.

Which, among other things, is a stupid, silly argument that basically amounts to: "I liked SSBM's mechanics better."

this is just bait (as is most of your post). Melee is objectively more mechanically developed than SSB.

Zeus posted...
All of which are stupid arguments. Sequels sell because they're popular. Contrary to your angsty indie argument, most companies would *kill* for a series they could successfully sequel and, for the most part, game series only end because they stop being unprofitable. And the issue isn't what they're doing first-party, but instead more a lack of outstanding THIRD-party support which is where Sony & Microsoft -- both of whom also heavily produce sequels when they can -- have generally benefited. It's especially egregious since, when third-party has a hit on a Nintendo console (Resident Evil: Revelations), not only does it get ported to the non-Nintendo systems but those systems are the ones to get the sequel.

you're right about the third-party part.

Zeus posted...
As for hardware innovation, it's a counter to being sucked into the graphics race --- a race to the bottom where dev costs incessantly balloon while providing little to no additional value. And, I should mention, the other consoles have copied Nintendo's hardware innovation. Sony went from calling the analog stick a gimmick to using it on every system since. And, of course, the PS Move and Kinect were created to capitalize on the Wii's success.

you're right about the "counter to graphics race" part.

Gimmick doesn't mean bad. However, the fact that they were taking an established franchise and using a completely different spin to drum up interest is very gimmicky.

a gimmick is a feature used to sell something that isn't as interesting as it seems. it's a hype generating feature. MP happens to be first person, but that's not its selling point (or wasn't for me), it's just incidental, but even if it is a selling point, it's still not extraneous to the whole package, it works well with it and creates a genuinely unique experience. to call the first-person-ness of MP a gimmick means that you think it adds no value to the game, but to me it does. (if you're arguing that you feel the first-person-ness is simply tacked-on and does not add value to the game, and that it should have been third-person or something, fair enough. I don't consider it a vital feature, it's just the way the game is.)

Zeus posted...
So basically your criteria is nothing more than "if I liked it, it's not a rehash; if I don't like it, it is"?

Melee built on SSB mechanically, and not just a little, but significantly. Brawl didn't build on Melee mechanically at all, it regressed mechanically.

Zeus posted...
more importantly, not only are most sequels unnecessary (only real exception is something that continues the story after a cliffhanger), but no game is technically necessary.

so... then every game is a rehash? because it's a rehash of the "video game" concept? you're arguing the concept into meaninglessness.

again, the problem is that all nintendo is at this point is a sequel generating machine (not that sequels are bad, but that that's almost all they are; the PotD shouldn't be "which existing nintendo franchise would you like to see yet another sequel to", it should be something like "which previously unvisited gaming genre(s) would you like nintendo to explore next?"). they have little to no software innovation. for some reason they struggle to be hardware innovative when they should be trying to be software innovative. as I said before, they need to halve their hardware development and triple their software development.

lol. it's unique and exquisitely artistic, it's not a gimmick. the Wii is a gimmick. the virtual boy is a gimmick. that MP is an "FPS" (which it is only in a strict and meaningless sense) is completely irrelevant to what's good about it.

Zeus posted...
Still guilty of being rehashes if you're complaining about rehashes.

even taking the term literally, a "rehash" is not simply another version of something, it's an unnecessary version of something. melee VS SSB1 is not a rehash, it's too different, they play nothing alike. Brawl on the other hand is basically the same as melee but worse. (I have no idea how similar TTYD is or isn't to PM1.)

regardless, what I'm really complaining about is not second versions of franchises, but rather having a lineup that consists almost exclusively of 4th-10th versions of franchises. (a rebuttal to this point could be that I will nevertheless happily play TES 6, Doom 5, etc.etc. the thing though is that on PC I have so much selection that I do get my favorite franchises returning for the umpteenth time, but I also get an endless stream of new and original concepts as well.)

Zeus posted...
The WiiU isn't really being supported (and even support for the 3DS is diminishing) and, by that argument, you need to buy a ps1, ps2, ps3, psp, and Vita to play the full Sony library.

yes, that is true (didn't you miss PS4?), and would be equally problematic if there were any such games I was interested in. (I suppose there is Bloodborne and Demon's Souls, but that's about it.)

Because you never spend anything on upgrading your PC for gaming?

I bought my PC something like 7 years ago and have upgraded the video card once for about $200-300.

but that's not really what I mean anyway. unless your computer is really behind, you aren't locked out of whole chunks of PC games, they just run worse. so you turn the graphics down lower. if you do upgrade, then yay, you get a performance boost to your existing games, you don't unlock whole libraries of them.

if I wanted to play all of the nintendo games that I haven't played yet, I'd need to buy a Wii U, a Switch, and a 3DS (and I already own a Wii and sort of a DS). and the number of games I'd get for all that hardware would be minimal at best. it's not worth it.

(and I'd still need to buy the 4DS and Switch 2 or whatever they release next to stay up to date. I'm so done with consoles; with PC games I already have more games than I can play and I never need a new system.)

Metroid Prime awesome artistically and mechanically, just an overall wonderful experience from start to finish, and a brilliant transition to 3D, which is something Nintendo got right a surprising number of times

SSB: Melee mechanically the best SSB game I've played

PM: TTYD having just played a bit of it today, it's pretty good. not entirely sure it belongs in the top 3 or not though.

Runners up include:
MGS: Twin Snakes not sure it counts. had a great time playing it.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance enjoyed it a lot, but it's not really among the best games ever

Metroid Prime 2 some of it I really liked, but it felt too long, which is something I rarely say. I need to play it again more patiently some day. Sanctuary Fortress was amazing artistically.

F-Zero: GX probably the best F-Zero game, though the first is pretty amazing for its time as well.

sad thing is, that's almost all the games on the whole system that are worth playing... ok there's Wind Waker which was fun, but nothing special either. The Mario Kart was good, but it was just more Mario Kart.

I think this is really around the time that Nintendo completely lost their creative edge (not sure how to word it). Since then all they've been are gimmicks and rehashes. Their games are probably good, but they're spread so thin across too many platforms. It's not worth the effort to have that many systems. Give me a platform that can play all Nintendo games and I'll gladly buy it and the games, but the way things are now I may never play a new Nintendo game again.

(it's almost as if they have hired too much hardware development staff and not enough software development staff. or their management has decided that there's more profit in hardware than in software, though I wouldn't expect that to be true. they need to triple their software development and halve their hardware development.)

illegal immigration doesn't just mean you broke a law, it means you aren't even a citizen of the country in the first place.

Is there a point in mentioning this?

it's a difficult or impossible to compare situation. comparing it to any kind of normal law-breaking doesn't work. this isn't "an element of the system broke a rule of the system and so faces the consequences imposed by the system"; rather it's "an element thought to be in the system was discovered not to be an element of the system". it's a fundamentally different concept.

basically I kind of agree with you, though maybe not so coldly/harshly. the border should have been enforced in the first place. it's unfortunate that we have the situation that something was not enforced for so long, luring people into abusing it, and resulting in the current problem, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be fixed.

It's not really that interesting. All it really does is shit on people who try to enforce the rules.

it's interesting because it doesn't have a clearly correct answer. if some law was from the 1800s and was not even relevant anymore, and yet many people were technically breaking it, would it make any sense to suddenly start enforcing it? for one thing, law isn't so black and white that the law says X and so X is illegal. there's interpretation and spirit VS letter of the law.

but, this is not completely analogous to the illegal immigrant thing anyway. illegal immigration doesn't just mean you broke a law, it means you aren't even a citizen of the country in the first place.

there's an interesting ethical question about starting to enforce a law that was never enforced before.

it's similar to speeding tickets, just in this case on a staggeringly bigger scale.

there are places in the city where there are never speed traps, or maybe if there are, they're easy to avoid. since everyone "knows" this, everyone speeds in those areas. some days there can be 10-15 cars all barelling through an 80kph zone at 105kph or more.

ok, but what happens when for the first time in 10-15 years, all of a sudden there's a new effective speed trap there, and the cops get to write hundreds of tickets per day for a few days or more. the people wouldn't have broken the law if the law had been enforced in the first place.

well that's pretty damn disturbing...

one thing I'd watch out for, though, are jump cuts. (although, from the scale of the prank I don't think that matters.)

for example, this quote:

"yeah, they haven't quite developed, uh, <CUT>, what we call conscience, where you feel guilty about doing something wrong, that's developing, you're learning right and wrong. <CUT> if they haven't developed that yet, they can be very effective soldiers."

that's potentially a pretty horrifying thing to say, but with the cuts, it's hard to know if that's really how it was said. it doesn't sound obviously edited though, so maybe it's just camera switches, I'm not an expert at detecting that kind of thing.

honestly, that's a beautiful ambiguity. Donkey Kong is named after the antagonist (or you play as the antagonist?), is in a sense a Mario game (game where you play as Mario), but is canonically a DK game, not a Mario game.

I think Mario must be the spin-off. I almost wanted to say "both or neither", but Mario is definitely descended from the original DK games (Mario Bros. was definitely a "spin-off" of DK), but modern DK is not a spin-off of Mario, it's more like a continuation of the DK games.

I think the issue only arises that in DK, really you're playing as the antagonist, or the titular character is the antagonist. It's a game-where-you-play-as-Mario but it's not really a Mario game, it just has a role-reversal.

basically the UI for the whole game has been changed to fit their Siege of Dragonspear theme. It sort of ruins the feel of the base game; makes it a lot less cheery. The feel of the original was "yay RPG adventure!", but now it's all gloomy. I don't mind how it looks necessarily, or that anything is moved, it just ruins the feel of the game.
