I don't know what you mean. if you use salted butter, then you are stuck with a minimum amount of either salt or butter. (if you use 2 cups of salted butter, then you have X amount of salt, minimum). as soon as you separate them, you are free to use as much or as little of either as you want. this doesn't mean you can't use salted butter, but things are immediately more flexible once you do.

it's basically modularity. separation of components is generally a better design; coupled components leads to problems.

so that you can control the amount of salt. if you separate them, then their quantities become independent. if you use salted butter then the proportion is fixed, or even arbitrary.

I enjoy grand strategy games. I'm really not sure what answer you to give? I looked up gameplay videos of eu4 before trying it myself.

why do you play them as much as you do? what is it about them that has you keep going after all that time? do you find them particularly deep, where you try to master the mechanics but the game is complex enough that it's challenging to master, or is it just that there's so many different ways to play? do you consider them decidedly better in some ways than other games you've played? are they good games that are doing things that you wish more games could do?

you mean like KSP? that's like literally what the game is, building and flying vehicles around small planets.

cool, I like all of those games but have not played them that much. Stellaris I'm just passed 700.

what do you think of them as games? are they worth that much time? (I'm specifically iffy on Paradox games. I like them in principle but... I'm not exactly sure if I like their design philosophy.)

to be pedantic, I think the bridge is high to allow ships to pass underneath. the incline would be because there is limited space for a lengthier ramp to achieve that height.

I think I've built 3 over the years. something like ~$1200, ~$2100, ~$1200, not including later upgrades. almost time for a new one again.

I think I'm actually still using the video card from the second one in my work computer (though it might be the one from the third one now since I upgraded it, can't recall for sure).

most apps no longer work, including some of the default ones like weather. email hasn't worked in a very long time. supposedly GPS was going to stop working a couple years ago, but that does still seem to work. browser works but is pretty terrible and mostly just useful to have something to read while waiting for something.

I have an iphone 3gs. not sure but I think it might be 8GB. it says 2.5GB available, 3.7GB used.

100% is never going to be a realistic goal, but we're stuck at like 80%. There's no inherent reason why we couldn't break that threshold and plateau at 99% or something like that, but we don't because of holdouts that refuse to get the jab.

We can expect another plateau as we get to the point where most of the people who got the first two have their booster, but again, that plateau is going to happen because of people who don't want #3, not because it's impossible to reach near-100%.

the point is saying it's "plateauing" doesn't say anything. the problem is not that it's levelling off, it has to level off; it's that it's levelling off lower than it could have. (and then.. is it? it's actually still increasing by close to 1% a week. 100s of thousands of people are getting their first or second shot, week after week. in a country with only ~37m people, over a million people have gotten their first or second dose in the first few weeks of January.)

yeah but that doesn't mean it will cease to exist. won't it be more like the cold or flu, where it just fluctuates over time? "pretty much" die out, is not dying out, and not dying out means it will flare up again later.

only to take the garbage out or something. though these days I seem to have lost almost all of my cold resistance and feel like I'm gonna die in -15C with a jacket on.

when I was younger, I found that -4C was about the limit for working outside with shorts on. anything less than that and it started to hurt a bit too deeply after a while.

if I was stuck outside in -25C with shorts and T-Shirt I would jog or run to the nearest source of warmth which would hopefully be my car or home.

They're not plateauing because of a lack of people, they're plateauing because the remainder refuse to get the shots.

it's plateauing because there is no scenario in which you don't asymptotically approach 100% vaccination. we are close to administering 1% vaccine doses percapita daily (in canada). anti-vaxxers or not, you will reach the limit very quickly at that rate. and again, we already have over twice the population in doses administered (and are still maintaining that rate, for now).

this doesn't make sense to me. I would say/guess omicron is not going anywhere. it will remain highly contagious; it will probably become less deadly (by taking out those who will die from it), but it's not going to disappear, how can it? it would have to be something like once you get it once, you never get it again, but that is not anywhere close to the case. if you know something I don't, let me know.

not up to speed on this issue, but "you must be vaccinated to cross the border" is not an unreasonable rule at all. and it sounds like it's not even that strict.

damn thought maybe #6 because it looked african for some reason (red and green I guess) but that's portugal which I should have recognized as it's geographically one of my favorite countries.

vaccination rates are plateauing pretty hard

canada has over 2 vaccines administered per person (percapita). of course it's "plateauing" there are only so many people. meanwhile 1000 people are still dying weekly which is almost as bad as it ever has been.

and isn't "plateauing" fine anyway? again there are only so many people. canada is administering something like 305k vaccines per day over the last 28 days. there are only ~37 million people here.

yeah those are all things that are particularly improved through practice more than reading (music I guess there's music theory and reading music notation so depends what you mean)

I think one of the main things is whether you can fail safely. it's much more difficult to improve at something if you can't fail at it, but for things that you can fail at (so that you can practice effectively), it's just a matter of energy and motivation. (and those are things you can fail at.)

sounds similar to "virtual particles"; basically particles continuously pop into and out of existence, but always cancel themselves out adding up to zero. when this happens at the edge of the event horizon of a black hole, sometimes one particle falls in and one escapes, which IIRC is the source of Hawking radiation.

this effect sounds like it's similar or related, but this is the first I've heard of it.

What gets me are the people that are like "the vaccine doesn't work against Omicron, and that's 95% of the cases in the US right now!" The Omicron wave peaked in the US at a 7-day average of over 800,000 cases a day. At 95% Omicron, that still means 40,000 non-Omicron cases a day, which is roughly on par with the daily case count for the second wave back in July 2020. Omicron is overwhelmingly dominant right now, but it has achieved that on top of other variants, not by replacing them, so there will still be plenty of value in the vaccines once Omicron finished burning itself out (to say nothing of the protection they do offer against Omicron, however limited it might be).

I'm not anti-vax, and things could only be worse without it, but at the same time it sure is underwhelming in its effect. we've administered more doses of vaccine than there are people on the planet, and it still feels like it has done next to nothing. I don't know how/if things could be better though.

I probably enjoyed Grade 11 and 12 math the most. there was also Grade 12 computers, but I already knew enough that I just plowed through the content in half the time and spent the rest of the semester making a small game. (sounds fun but I didn't really learn anything the whole class, and the other students didn't exactly like my over-performance.)

am I missing something, why would it be over? cases are off the scale compared to anything previous, and deaths are almost as bad as ever.

the only "good" part is we seem to have just crossed the omicron peak (at least maybe in USA and Canada), but statistically there's phenomenally more covid spread right now than ever, and about as many deaths as ever.

I love cross-genre in general and always thought you should have a game with shooter sections and also walking sections. (Xexyz is another game kind of like that.)

a remake should just focus on doing the two gameplay types well, and also maybe finding a way to blur the edge between them a little. I don't know the game though so can't offer much more detail.

in System Shock 2 theoretically you can melee your way to victory for much of the game (never tried a melee focused playthrough though), so aside from turrets or something you can't strictly be stuck from no ammo. but to beat the last boss you DO need specific resources or items, and if you don't have them you're SOL.

I watched the stage play once. that's about all I know if it.

I didn't forget him, I don't really see him as a "main character" I guess. he drives the plot, at first, but it's not really "about" him. he's just there to guide Terra through the world despite not having her memories.

the point though was that everyone has their moments of being center-stage, but no one is ultimately the main character by the end. (even if some are more important than others).

FF6 is interesting because the "main character" changes constantly. for a good chunk of the first half it's Terra, for a smaller chunk of the second half it's Celes, and everyone is the main character of their own stories, but ultimately the "main character" is everyone in the party as a whole, representing the people of that world.

seems like he is being anti-cave-dweller more than disney is being anti-dwarf. maybe it's a really good cave.
