Plus Loewe's whole thing is ultimately that his past broke him just like it did Joshua, he just handled it differently. He joined Ouroboros as essentially a coping mechanism and adopted the whole "test for humanity" nonsense to try to tell himself that at least the tragedy ultimately could have some sort of meaning even though his new worldview was never coherent and if he truly believed it he wouldn't even be there. Hence in the end Joshua gets through to him by making him realize he's ultimately just deluding himself to avoid having to fully confront and accept his past.

That Abyss Worm fight is a hell of an upgrade over their boss fight equivalent, they're a lot stronger and bulkier relative to your power level on this go and there's more of them. I think I spent a good twenty minutes in that fight, got through it first try but it was a huge slog of spamming clock down on everything and chipping away one worm at a time.

Tita seems cool in theory but in practice I've never gotten much mileage out of her, her damage doesn't end up being all that great in my experience and she's reliant on luck with status quartz to really make a difference beyond that AoE blind craft being genuinely good, but she's bad against bosses and also very frail.

Eh, this isn't too much of a spoiler really, especially Kloe. When she has a pet Royal Symbol of the Kingdom and calls in the royal guard you kind of figure it out immediately. Olivier's status is a lot more ambiguous but it's not exactly surprising that he ends up being someone important, I think I had predicted as much by the end of the Haken Gate section where he first joins up.

Engage uses a different hit rate formula than Three Houses. Above 50% is the same as before, but in Engage, if an enemy has below 50 percent hit rate it's more likely to hit you than in previous recent Fire Emblem games (Fates used the same system, irrc, but lol @ playing Fates).

Either way, you're thinking about percentages the wrong way. Missing 1 out of 10 will happen more often than you think, and hitting 3 out of 10 will too.

So the Fire Emblem RN systems go like this

FE1-5: 1RN, hit rates are exact what they seem.
FE6 through to Awakening, also Three Houses: 2RN, hit rates are based on an average of two random numbers. Displayed hit rates below 50 are less likely to hit than they appear, hit rates above 50 are more likely to hit than they appear.
Fates, Echoes and Engage: Hybrid RN. Below 50 is 1RN, so 30 displayed hit is actually a 30% chance to hit. Above 50 there's a complicated formula that ends up being similar to 2RN in that attacks are more likely to hit than the hit rate suggests, but it's not quite as extreme an effect as in the true 2RN system.

People are bad at probability and complain when a 25% chance happens 1 in 4 times (unless it's beneficial to them, in which case they complain when it doesn't happen much more than that) so some games fudge the numbers to try to make people not complain but it doesn't really work because people still just fixate on the one time something improbable happened and insist it must be a conspiracy against them rather than them just not understanding that improbable is not impossible

My first time playing (AM) I couldn't beat him in C4, 6, or 8 and didn't recruit Caspar so it didn't feel like too much.

In VW it was definitely more of a "this little shit again?" situation

I always beat him in every map except 6 so he wears out his welcome very quickly. Especially since he's an awful boss with his infinite range counter attacks and high crit rate that basically forces you to never have a truly reliably way to kill him other than Dark Spikes OHKO (since he is also very evasive and durable so things like Lance of Ruin Knightkneeler whiff non-stop). The Hounds at least have the decency to never be as obnoxious as he was and they even change up a few details of how they fight you from time to time instead of being the exact same guy scaled up higher and higher (unless you do the Caspar paralogue and KO him with Caspar, then he finally ditches the damn scythe of getcritbitch from then on)

3 maybe?

I think I'm actually just wrong. A lot of enemies are fought 3 times. Ishtar, Kishuna, the Death Knight, etc. Though some of those fights are optional. Maybe these guys in Engage just stand out to me because there are four of them and I don't like them lmao

I think you could fight the Death Knight six or seven times on a single playthrough. Chapter 4 where he first shows up, chapter six where you rout everyone else or beat him, chapter 8 in Remire, chapter 11 of non-CF routes, Mercedes/Caspar paralogue, Fort Merceus and SS/VW Enbarr. I'm not sure if the paralogue is on non-AM routes and he's dead by Enbarr on that route so it might be a maximum of six on any given route.

First two games are decent, never played the third. They have great music, look good for GBA games, have a good combat system and some neat dungeons, though a few are too long for their own good. Their biggest flaw is the writing, the story is not awful but it's also nothing special at all and yet they expect you to sit through an insane amount of dialogue for it, much of which is repetitive to the point that they could have cut out a good 30% of it without losing anything of substance.

I don't think Celine is taking two hits from anything with a serious physical attack stat unless you get absurdly lucky with her growths, her base HP is bad and her defense is solid for a mage but not amazing. Her durability felt surprisingly solid on Hard but now that I'm on Maddening she definitely became a typical mage who dies in two hits, and she's not as reliable about killing stuff either (Warp Ragnarok and doubles vs armours both kept coming up a point or two short, part of why I'm glad I decided in advance I'd be ditching her on this playthrough in favour of Citrinne, who has her flaws but damage sure isn't one of them)

It's a reference to Genealogy chapter 10, where you have two very strong bosses hanging out in that area (albeit positioned a bit differently since this paralogue is letting you skip past them) that you have to either beat one of, bypass to seize or sacrifice somebody to (all of which make them both leave).

I'll turn her into a Griffin Knight then. I really need to find her some better weapons if she's good at magic. I'm only using the iron lance. It's tempting to reclass as a mage because a Mage Knight sounds badass.

If you want to stay griffin for flight and staff access, going sword griffin and using the Levin Sword is good. You get one for free reasonably early on IIRC and can buy another before the Flame Lance is available, and the Levin Sword is just flat out better with significantly less weight, more might and either the same or a bit more hit.

Please tell me Timerra and Fogado are good

Fogado is pretty solid, he has a decent magic stat which is all it takes to use the Radiant Bow (the might on that weapon is so high it doesn't need high magic to hit hard) and doubles everything forever. I wound up keeping Erika on him forever, the magic boost she gives helps with Radiant Bow damage and Lunar Brace's partial defense ignoring on a unit that doubles but needs more damage is a good combo, plus cavalry makes her Engage attack stronger. I used Timerra a lot and got good results but that's probably mostly Ike being nuts, her speed and defense are pretty good but her strength is shaky and her build is bad enough that the speed gets a lot less impressive if she uses anything she can do good damage with. She's easy enough to get some use out of but probably not one of the better units in the game or anything.

So since I'm new-ish to FE, how do you tell what makes a unit strong? I never really looked into that stuff and just did whatever for Awakening and 3H.

The long story is it's complicated, the short story is it doesn't matter too much on your first playthrough, you can use whoever you feel like and things will work out (especially if you're on normal, maybe not the case on Maddening, not for a first attempt at least). The only unit with a significant downside to long term use is Vander and it's pretty obvious that you just stop using him once you have a full team of people better than him, only a few units have hidden upside (Anna has high magic growth but starts in a physical class, Clanne is sort of the other way around), pretty much everyone else will end up being decent if you just use them in their default class line or any other that fits their stat spread (which basically just means don't put a unit with garbage magic in a magic using class and similarly obvious stuff).

The only thing that isn't necessarily obvious is that you want to keep access to some utility features - high movement and especially flight is useful for getting to places, which makes for a lot more situations where even if you made a bit of a mistake, you have someone mobile enough to go over there and kill something to fix the problem. The backup class chain attacks anything in its attack range, which is very nice for boss kills. And staffs can be very powerful and the movement based ones don't even require a high magic stat to work well. There's a lot of useful stuff beyond raw stats, and in Engage in particular you can add forges, engravings and various Emblem tricks onto your stats.

edit: The thing that I might not have made clear is that you don't need to worry too much about growths. This is true in most games to varying extents but in Engage in particular no one other than Vander stands out as not growing well (and even for Vander it's more about how slow he gains experience than his actual growths, which are low but not awful). If a units base stats look really good, they're guaranteed to be really good for at least a few chapters and will probably be fine long term anyway. It takes quite a while for growths to catch up to high bases (a 10% growth rate advantage is only 1 extra point per ten levels, so if dude A has 2 more strength than dude B it's going to take 20 levels for them to be equal on average and another ten for B to finally get ahead, so A is equal or better for a huge amount of time) so you rarely go wrong assuming a unit with good base stats is worth your time.

<.< no I never went for that special ranking where you finish the whole game and every map in under 200 turns either.

Yeah that SS or SSS or whatever rank is absurd to get, you have to warp skip a bunch of maps to even have a chance at it and you still need to handle maps like 4 quickly. You can skip 14x though since it doesn't give you a new character (Linoan seems to join there, but you can get her without doing that map), the requirement is 199 turns or less and full recruitment (with one out of Olwen/that other guy whose name I can't spell). Which is what forces you into 24x to get the stoner back.

Also the thracia 776 map for Leif is still easier here than in the original because of how reinforcements work.

If you compare to Thracia chapter 22 without staff spam sure because that map is hell, but with staffs the only difficulty is managing fatigue in 21x so you can still get all the stuff you want while bypassing the entire map. Thracia's second half completely breaks the moment you're not playing a self-imposed challenge that ignores all the silly tools it gives you.

Chapter 11 is probably one of the harder ones in Path of Radiance, you probably don't have anyone but Titania that is nigh-invincible yet and she's not quite as game breaking as she was earlier, and if you're sending people north or south then you don't have a ton of units for how much of a mess the middle path can become. And the Burger King ambush can be a problem, obviously.

When does it stop being a waste to kill enemies with Vander? I'm doing chapter 3 right now and he gets nothing.

It's never a waste to kill enemies with the unit that can do it most conveniently. People reeeaaalllyy overrate how important exp management is in Fire Emblem, it basically only matters if you're LTCing, you're never going to suffer because you used Vander to kill stuff. Ignoring him is just making the early game a bit less smooth in exchange for not affecting the rest of the game in any way. This is extra true in Engage where you get strong units handed to you periodically for most of the game.

Reloading for levels is going to drive you insane eventually, you get a rewind feature very soon anyway that makes keeping people alive easy. You don't need to worry about optimizing level ups or anything in Fire Emblem in general and especially not in Engage where for the most of the game you keep getting new units who are at least as good as anyone you might have trained. Generally the best advice for Fire Emblem is to not worry about some sort of long term plan where you conserve every limited resource and try to milk the most exp out of everything, you'll make the short term much harder on yourself for no real long term gain vs just using useful stuff when it seems helpful and taking kills on whoever gets them most conveniently.
