Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered (PS5)

I liked it! It reminded me of Arkham City except actually good. The combat (and particularly the combat-heavy side objectives) really started to wear on me as the game went on, though in fairness I was trying to do all of them. I also found it impossible to care about almost the entire second act, and I was completely done with the stealth sections by act 3. I guess it's a good thing if most of my biggest complaints with a game are "there was too much of this thing I liked initially" though.

Another game from the big itch.io bundle. This one's great! It's essentially a Zelda randomizer with a fairly subversive story. It's only a few hours long and has multiple endings, so it lends itself to multiple playthroughs. Recommended.

Cleaning up some more short itch.io games.

Boa Retina (PC)

It's a 20 minute verbal abuse simulator. Not exactly fun but it accomplishes its goal.

Cuckoo Castle (PC)

A very tiny Metroidvania where you access new places by finding new playable characters. Has a cute GameBoy aesthetic. It's good!

Extreme Meatpunks Forever (PC)

Another itch.io game. "Beat" is in heavy quotation marks here because I started skipping all combat towards the end and lost to the final boss (not sure if I got a bad ending as a result or if it doesn't matter). The game isn't fun to play and the writing is pretty amateurish (and I'm not the biggest fan of characters who talk in chatspeak to show how irreverent they are), but I dig the setting a lot. They had me at plunging your neck onto a "nerve spike" to control a giant suit of bone and meat. It has a very Evangelion vibe with its biomechs and broken characters, though everything else is plenty original.

Serre (PC)

Short (~20 minute) itch.io VN about a girl who falls in love with an invading alien. It's cute!

Elliot Quest (Switch)

I fairly regularly buy games on the Switch eShop that are only a few cents, and expect them to be entertaining for a few minutes and that's about it. This game is definitely an exception. It's essentially a fully realized sequel to Zelda II, except you don't start the game miserable at combat. Knowing where to go is a pain and the ending left a lot to be desired (I think I killed the final boss by accident) but it's a really, really solid action/adventure game overall. I think I paid 1 cent for it; it's worth like $20.

Vestaria Saga I: War of the Scions

This game is Fire Emblem as fuck, which I guess is sort of the point. I enjoyed most of it, but it was definitely lacking in quality of life features and there were a lot of chapters that were painful 50-80 turn slogs. I wasn't playing anywhere near optimally but still, shit was long. The last chapter probably took me close to 8 hours by itself. I don't really see myself replaying this, unlike other FEs.

Lena UN (11) 9
Lena UN (12) 2
Colm UN 3
Lethe UN (9) 7
Lethe UN (10) 2
Tharja UN 6
Ryoma UN 9

Lena's not the most interesting character, but she's one of the better generic healer girls. That's faint praise but like her personality in her introductory chapter a lot, she just suffers from not having much after that and being downright nonexistent in FE12. Colm is uhhh a thief. He's a got a relationship with Neimi that's also not very interesting? I dunno, I'm not a fan of the guy but he isn't terrible. Lethe is great, at least in FE9 where she gets more development. She's still good in FE10, just has less spotlight. Tharja sucks. Ryoma's okay; he suffers from Fates' bad writing like everyone. He gets a lot of screentime and therefore more development than most.

As units I agree with everything Panthera said and therefore have nothing to contribute!

Leif UN (4) 3
Nanna UN (4) 7
Soren UN (10) 6
Astrid UN (10) 3
Marth UN (12) 6
Caeda UN (12) 7

My unit rankings are going to be pretty wonky today, aside from FE7 I've only played each of these games once. I am open to corrections!

Ares I remember being very strong with his Mistletoe sword, not completely dominant but close to it. I like him a lot! He's the son of my favorite NPC and I wish he had a real story arc to speak of instead of just a grudge against Seliph.

Rebecca is bad, she can be serviceable if you really need an archer but FE7 protip: you don't really need an archer. As a character she's cute I guess? The Rebecca/Dart character arc is pretty interesting at least.

Genny is good, she has a solid magic learnset and is just a capable healer with eventual damage output once she gets Seraphim. Tempted to go 8 here but I'll stick with 7. She's also a more interesting character than Silque but only just. I don't like the way her name is spelled at all #NotMyJenny

Never used Ferdinand because I haven't played SS/CF yet and his support doesn't grow in part 1 and he demands ranks in stuff like Riding that my Byleth never had and so he's the only character I never recruited in VW and yes i am bitter about it thank you. He's one of my least favorite playables in 3H too but again I've never used him so I can only judge him from interactions at the monastery.

Leif is kind of a nightmare to train. I did it, it's possible, but it sucks. The payoff is access to (arguably) the best class in the game, but tbh it's probably not worth it because it doesn't make him THAT much better than anyone else who's already good at the start. Like Ares. Did I mention I like Ares.

Nanna is a solid healer on a horse. I remember FE10 Soren being kind of unimpressive? I mean he's fine, but not bonkers like some FE10 characters are. Astrid FE10 sucks. Marth FE12 is a superior combat unit compared to his FE11 self I think? Still not great. Caeda isn't nuts in FE12 like she is in FE11 but she's solid if you want a flier that isn't Sirius reclassed into a dragonlord.

TopicRating Every Fire Emblem Character: Day 7 - Ayra, Sue, Ross, Henry, Xander
Kenri
07/12/20 4:17:55 PM
#3
I don't see any reason to split character ratings for different games, and that goes for 9/10 but also 1/3/11/12 and 6/7. I know that personally I'll just rate them the same in pretty much every instance.

Ayra CH 8
Sue CH 6
Ross CH 6
Henry CH 6
Xander CH 2

Ayra UN 7
Sue UN 5
Ross UN 3
Henry UN 6
Xander UN 9

Ayra's just plain cool. She's a fierce warrior in a way that FE rarely lets women be, and ends up one of the most memorable FE4 characters because of it. She's pretty damn tough in gameplay too. Unfortunately she is sword infantry in Horse Emblem, and it's a big problem but really her only one. Once she actually reaches an enemy she just turns them into ribbons.

Sue is fairly plain but inoffensive, I'm okay with her. Being bow-locked isn't great but if you're going to be, nomad is a great class to have for it. I think I'd rather use Shin though.

I like Ross but he's a straight up garbo unit, probably slightly more usable than Amelia and Ewan just because he joins early. But really, if you use him it's for the sheer joy of it, not because he's actually good. Character-wise he's fine, I don't like him as much as the other kids in FE8 though. He has a good dynamic with his dad and unlike almost every other case in FE it doesn't end in tragedy.

Henry is definitely an Awakening character, and his requisite gimmick is dark humor, mostly in the form of shitty puns. It's hard to hate, but it definitely feels out of place. As a unit he's fine, I think I'd use him over most other mages in Awakening.

Xander is hot trash and probably the most inconsistently written character in the whole series. Not only is he completely different in each of the Fates games, he's even inconsistent within each game, depending on if you're reading the main story or the supports. Hard to argue with him as a unit though. He's not as dominant as Ryoma and arguably Camilla is better too, but he definitely stands out as an absurdly powerful prepromo nonetheless.

Leon CH 8
Leif CH 7
Florina CH 9
Micaiah CH 4
Mercedes CH 7

Leon UN 7
Florina UN 9
Micaiah UN 7
Mercedes UN 7

Leon's a bit of a gay stereotype but I like him, he gets solid dialogue and is treated pretty respectfully. Bows are pretty damn good in Echoes so he's a very solid unit too, though not exactly dominant.

I like Leif well enough. His story of living in the shadow of more impressive crusaders like Seliph and Ced is compelling and he grows a lot on his way to becoming their equal.

Florina's a personal fave, I don't find her annoying at all like some people do and I think she fits in well with Lyn and the other members of Lyn's party. I'm maybe overrating her a bit because Fiora is more reliable, but Florina just shows up so early and is so consistently useful that she's really a top unit unless she gets screwed by bad level ups (obviously STR being the most common one).

Micaiah sux. Thani is great though, and Sacrifice is... uh, situationally not-useless. She'd be a little higher if she wasn't so likely to end up underleveled for part 4/end game, but honestly the hardest part of the game is by far the beginning and she's one of the more reliable units there.

I go back and forth on how much I like Mercedes. She has some really terrible lines but most of the time I like her well enough (I had Byleth marry her on my first playthrough). She has a really cute friendship with Annette and bounces off Sylvain pretty well too. As a unit she was a generic healbot for me before eventually getting to drop some hurt as a gremory. Very useful if not impressive.

Takumi UN 6

Nanna is a fairly cool lady, one of the better gen 2 kids. I never played FE5 so I can't rate her as a unit in it.

Lugh is fairly generic in personality, but he's a solid unit. Good growths and availability, and he hits Res which is always helpful in FE6.

Astrid has bad taste in men and shows up underpowered. She's potentially worth the investment in the long run, in FE9 at least (much less so in FE10). I can definitely take her or leave her.

Robin is very very good, if not broken. She isn't amazing immediately but quickly gets there and stays there. Personality-wise Robin is a mixed bag. She's probably the best written avatar, which is damningly faint praise but still. She's also more than just one quirk repeated ad nauseum, which puts her above most of the Awakening cast, but again, faint praise...

Takumi is tainted by Fates' writing to be a shadow of an interesting character. Frankly I'm tempted to rate him even lower, but at least there's something interesting there. As a unit he's solid? Fates made a good effort to fix bow units and Takumi benefits a lot from it, but like, bow-locked infantry still aren't great. If you're gonna use one, Takumi's your guy though j/k use Setsuna instead, she needs a friend

Majotori is a game about a witch who grants wishes, but only if you can win a game of trivia (and then get lucky on a spin of a roulette wheel). Caeda is hilarious for the way she can zero in on complete losers in the enemy army to recruit by slightly flirting with them. Innes is a solid foil to the twins and just a cool character in general. I like Ricken more than his "don't treat me like a kid" archetype would suggest but he's not a favorite or anything. Panne is Missed Opportunities, The Character and it kinda just makes me sad but that's not her fault. She's a cool rabbit lady and I wish she got more screen-time.

Marth is hard to rate as a unit. Obviously as a combat unit he's middling at best but he's great for treasure duty and your only option for visiting villages, so you definitely want him around (not to mention he's required). I'll go with a 6 here, arbitrarily. Caeda is a sky goddess who rains pointy death on her enemies. She's not a brain-dead invincible character but she's definitely at the top of the Shadow Dragon roster. Innes is mediocre as far as FE8 prepromos go -- he won't hold you back (not any more than any other archer, at least), but he's definitely not going to impress much either. Ricken is okay, I guess? I don't think him or his closest competition Miriel are anything special, especially compared to Robin, but he's adequate. Panne is a boring unit who can only do one thing, but she's okay at it at least.

Weird, it's almost like a 15 year reputation of not giving a shit about anyone else has impacted the way people respond to his posts.
