Marcus is a solid advisor type character, though he never really has any spotlight moments (except in gameplay lol). Nino is part of FE7's best subplot and has great boss convos/supports. Soren gets some of the best character development in FE9 (though Jill does essentially the same development even better). Soren also plays really well off Titania when Ike asks the two of them for advice, giving pragmatic advice to counter Titania's heroism. Hilda is an amusing character but her gimmick definitely starts to get old by the end of 3H.

Marcus is probably the best FE7 unit, with amazing bases, decent growths, the game's best class, and great availability. There's basically nothing he can't do for the first 70% of the game and he can still contribute even in the final chapter (though you'll definitely want to have better characters by then). Nino is kind of the opposite, requiring a lot of investment to catch her up to the rest of your party. If you put in the time, she'll be the game's best magic user, but it's really only worth it if you particularly like her. Soren is your standard early game mage and there's not much more that needs to be said about him. He's solid. I don't have a great handle on the 3H meta but my understanding is that Leonie can do most of what Hilda does but slightly better. That being said, my experience with Hilda is that she turns any enemy she touches into paste with minimal investment. There are definitely worse units you could use!

Sigurd's one of my favorites and is broken as hell, so he's an easy 10 for both ratings. Roy's issues as a unit are well known, but I like him well enough as a character -- he's probably the most politically savvy lord in the series, which lets him contribute in situations where other lords would just defer to their advisors/allies. Joshua is an extremely cool character with a very appealing design but his value as a unit isn't great; luckily FE8 is easy enough that he won't actually weigh your party down any.

I've never understood Cordelia's popularity. She's fine, I guess. I don't really like her pining for Chrom as far as character gimmicks go. Peri is probably the worst character in the series, so that's an easy 1 if only because 0 is off the table. I've never used either one so I can't really judge them as units, they seem decent enough though.

All these characters have issues as units, but you pretty much have to use them so you might as well do it, and with their great availability and reasonably high growths they don't really drag your team down any on a non-optimized playthrough.

Character-wise Hector's the obvious standout -- he's just a really cool character and at times a great foil to Lyn and Eliwood. Lyn suffers from the plot leaving her behind as the game goes on, but she remains interesting in her supports, and there's something really compelling about the line she straddles between the freedom she craves and the responsibilities of being nobility. Both of them are among my favorite characters in the series. Eliwood has grown on me a lot since I first played FE7; in some ways he's just a generic hero guy but there's more vulnerability and maturity and intelligence there than with most lords in the series (and JRPG protags in general).

Sometimes you can visit the same area later as the other main character and recruit them to that party instead.

There's not really any reason to do this other than for the hell of it.

As far as I know (I don't have the DLC myself) overclassing is exactly what it sounds like. If you buy the DLC you get to promote your already-promoted units to even stronger bonus classes. I'm not sure what exactly the point is, since the game isn't particularly difficult.

I think so, yeah. I've also heard fresh rocks give better loot than ones you've already mined on previous days.
