I don't think I'd describe Xenosaga as a serious space opera, but maybe I just spent too much time riffing on it while playing it and now I can't see it as anything other than goofy as hell.

This is a tricky one. It really depends on how much I want to punish it for setting up interesting plotlines that the rest of the trilogy makes absolutely no attempt to follow through on.

Xenoblade 1's sidequests are about as inoffensive as side content gets imo. Minor quests auto-complete without needing you to return to the quest giver and more important quests involve unique enemies, areas, or story lines. Mind you, I never did the post-game bonus bosses because that looked pretty tedious, but I had fun with just about everything else. Off the top of my head I can't think of a JRPG that does it better.

I don't have the issues with this that a lot of other people do, but that just means I have other, different issues. The big one is that a bunch of subplots just go nowhere or are dropped completely. Also, it's a complete retread of Fusion, but doesn't replace Fusion in the chronology? I dunno, it's just amateurish.

If you don't require the game world to be seamless and interconnected then it fits every other requirement I think?

I've taken to calling those games Zelda 2-likes because I feel like it better summarizes "action RPG with a world map and non-linear side scrolling levels" though

Zelda has always been Metroidvania adjacent but it typically doesn't have the platforming elements, the focus on movement upgrades, or the seamless interconnected world.

But if something like Bloodborne qualifies then imo Zelda absolutely does

The pacing is atrocious and most of the Disney stuff didn't even try. This was really when KH started going off the deep end with a bunch of different Soras and Ansems and stuff, too. The ending's not bad though!

The term requires explaining no matter what, that's unavoidable. Most genres do if someone has no video game knowledge and Metroidvania requires more than most because it's much more specific than most genres (and really it's a subgenre anyway, and a specific one even at that).

Personally I don't really get the sense that Souls-like is even a genre/subgenre so much as it is a design philosophy that can apply to many different genres? Either way the existing term works fine.

Much, much better group than yesterday. I like all the gen 1s plus Kirlia and Gothorita, but I gotta go with Kadabra. I'm not as big a fan of Alakazam though, so the line will lose my vote tomorrow.

Anyway it's a 3/10 for me. It doesn't make me angry like some bad stories do but it definitely isn't good.

Abra is the only one of these I really like. That'll change tomorrow though.

Sure, but it's easy to see the mouth as a decoration and the decoration in the front as a mouth. Plus the color schemes match up, when none of the others do. I'm not saying it is correct but at a glance it's wrong in a much more subtle way.

A fossil chimera Pokmon is a really cool idea, but I'm not a huge fan of the execution. I think my big issue is that Arctovish looks much more "correct" than the other 3, which makes me think there should be others that match up too, but there definitely aren't.

Rampardos I think. Kabutops is close though.

Specifically within the context of Harry Potter, I'd agree with pyresword -- I didn't find those to be interesting settings either, and certainly they weren't developed in the way Hogwarts was. Obviously other works can and have successfully set their stories in England, lol

Personally though I think even if JKR had handled it better, it would have fallen flat for me. The compelling part of HP to me was really only ever the school stuff.

I like this game's story, but the Disney stuff feels pretty superfluous. Gets bonus points for being the only KH game I've played where Riku is a tolerable character.

Between story and gameplay this is probably my favorite of the first 3 KH games lmao

You can DQ this vote if you want because I only bothered to get one ending, but this game's story is awful. Really surprised by the high scores so far, but different strokes and all that.

Not a huge fan of these either, but I don't mind Pichu, Elekid, Magby, or Togepi.

In the movie (and I think RBY too) researchers found Mew/its DNA in the jungle and cloned Mewtwo from it. This one actually fits the lore perfectly! It is a little weird none of the Tapus made it in though.

I love the first three so much, it's Dwebble for me though

Soulsborne is like the definition of clunky combat for me, based on Dark Souls, Demon's Souls, and Bloodborne. But also, I struggle to think of 3D games without at least somewhat clunky combat.

As for Code Vein, I own it but haven't played it so I can't vote.
