Shesh how do we have no theater fans here on B8? @HaRRicH , help me out here!

Tagging in.

It's pretty baller. They only censored a little bit of it, the filming is dynamic, and you get to see King George spit. I'm of the opinion that the soundtrack is better than the production itself, but man is it good anyway. It's a genre-crosser for people who don't like musicals or rap, which I can anecdotally attest to with what Disney+ just released.

A friend's brought up concerns with how the term slavery is used in the show, and this rewatch makes me think that's got some merit in at least two of its examples. It"s also very much a show that knows it was being produced in NYC, which, hey, I loved NYC too, but then it takes two easy pot shots at New Jersey and it's like "okay, we get it, Manhattan just happens to be in the greatest city in the world."

Still...if you like musicals, rap, or history, you owe it to yourself to watch. If you don't, this still has enough quality to cross the gap. It didn't become arguably the biggest musical this past decade for no reason.

I agree with most of that assessment...only really watch them for their design videos though and usually felt like those other interests of their was in the way of what I wanted from them. I'll need to look up New Frame Plus though, sounds cool.

James recently left them too, plus now they have a different guy voicing the show instead of Dan...forgot the new guy's name, but I like the replacement.

It helps that Kamekguy speaks a lot like one of my favorite real-life people (who also loves the medium deeply). Punch-Out!! videos are good, as was the 1-1 and Kaizo videos. Looking forward to Tyson's video soon and will watch Hibiki's later.

Do you ever watch Extra Credits? I really enjoy design break-downs like what you and them are doing.

Rainbow Ride's platforming is a lot of fun. The autoscrolling and slow start each life is a bummer though.

Tick Tock Clock is over-rated, but one of my favorite things to do in that level is climb all the way to the top star when the clock is completely stopped. That self-imposed challenge gets points from me.

Underleveled almost nailed everything in the opening post. Shifting Sand Land > Jolly Roger Bay and Mips is alright, but otherwise spot on.

Second floor is the next worst floor and it also has no Bowser-level or cap to unlock, but it has the best world too with Tall Tall Mountain so it's okay.

Third floor up doesn't have enough.

First floor = best floor.

True #1 is Yoshi's roof.

My background: I didn't get into Skyrim, Sark Souls, or Twilight Princess...probably ten hours between them all. A friend right before Breath of the Wild said without knowing my experience with those games that BotW fixes those three games' issues. It then won GotD, so I caved in after waiting on it three years.

Hot-damn, this is a good game. I'm still trying to process what this does so differently from Skyrim and DS -- I remember not loving Skyrim's combat or DS not lruly pausing in menus, plus I don't know that either of them allow paragliding -- but between this and Link Between Worlds we're seeing modern Zelda games shine in a way that's different from TP's style. Instant classic.

The cons: I don't like Zelda's voice-actress's performance here. She also has a good final line for the ending, but I wish we would have Link's response to a heavy question like that -- it doesn't do much for me to leave that up to player interpretation.

The frame-rate dips the lowest I can recall the series ever dropping sometimes. Menu controls -- not the menu interfaces as much and maneuvering between them -- took the entire game to adjust Motion controls with those augmented roll-the-ball-around segments felt inaccurate (though my Switch has to face what might be the wrong direction, in which case I accept the blame). Rain is a problem for mountain climbing and lightning is a problem in general.

The pros: seriously, paragliding is so cool. The shrines effectively pass for dungeon puzzles and the Divine Beasts pass for small dungeons. Link's dialogue choices were fun for somebody who doesn't traditionally speak. You feel amazing after taking down your first Lynel or Guardian. Cooking was less clunky than I feared. It's exciting to detour from your chosen path to see new things.

Weapon breaking: I'm settling this debate right now -- it's 90% fine. I would have liked seeing the other weapons and shields gained from defeating Divine Beasts be rechargeable like the Master Sword was, perhaps at the expense of being a little weaker for overall balance. Otherwise, man, yeah, improvising's alright. I just used my weakest weapons I had and stored my strongest weapons for when I needed them most -- that way it only bothered me to lose a weapon but I also got to upgrade my weapon. That worked alright for me. When I got the Master Sword, I think the game gives bad advice about not using the sword until Divine Beasts...but nah, I used that sword as much as I could to preserve my other degradable weapons and they kept improving because of that. This was fine.

Beaten and enjoyed:
LBW > BotW = LoZ > WW >= OoT > LttP > MM

Played but not beaten or particularly appreciated:

TP
FSA
Zelda 2

Breaking Bad's ending survived its hype.

That is already better than what most shows can do with lesser hype. I agree Felina felt a little clean, so to speak, but it manages to keep to the promises of the show alluded to or demonstrated from the very beginning:

*Walter White must die.
*He fears must be realized.
*His cleverness is top-notch.

(El Camino also manages to keep its previously alluded/demonstrated promises to Jesse's ending in BB -- Vince Gilligan and the crew are mesters of respecting their previous material for if-this-then-what progression)

Ozymandias is incredible television and the best episode of its series (only One Minute competes) While I'm glad you included it for this discussion, it just continues to show how well BB stuck its landing -- I would have voted for 4/4 even with just Felina.

About the Nazis sucking: Nazis always suck. What's incredible about BB though is the show repeatedly had episodes that could have been season finales or perhaps even series finales. We see it in this topic right here -- these last three episodes have people saying they would have been fine and satisfied if the show ended with any of them. The show kept upping the stakes, which is great as a general rule, but once you get to Nazis it's usually time to quit before you go deeper into Crazy Town and I'm so glad BB didn't fall for the pressure of adding additional seasons.

What a legendary show.

I generally take "indie" as a cultural level to say new low-budget up-and-comers. However, that ain't perfect either -- new company, new series, new employees, new mechanics, what number means low budget, etc.

Indie is like art: if you can convince people of it, it is it.

If that person was an actual stand-alone separate user, they should still be eligible, but I would forgive people who chose not to celebrate that kind of name. We would have forgiven people in 2002 if we had Gurus then and somebody named Nine_Eleven won that contest -- I imagine many of us would still not want to highlight a name like that today.

Now sure, It was funny to see the name on the leaderboard and I was comfortable with the jokes about the situation leading up to this...but I personally would not have wanted to celebrate that name in a sig either. I would have been happier just saying "congrats to the Guru winner" in that scenario.

If it was an alt for someone though, that person should be banned from the Gurus -- perhaps for just this contest, or perhaps even longer to better discourage that type of action -- and going to the next highest score would make sense.

So the games Ive mentioned above are the most recommended of each round, and all of them passed the GameFAQs site-wide test of getting enough nominations to enter a Game of the Decade contest. Pretty cool!

However, there were lots of games that missed out too. Heres a quick nod to a few snubs that earned our boards respect too, in case youre looking for more games than what our contest offered.

We had two snubs that got three nods of respect when I asked people to recommend games that didnt make it, so check these out first..

Spec Ops: the Line
Spelunky

And last, for a few extras, all eight of these snubs were mentioned twice if youre still hunting for the right next game to play..

Catherine
Guacamelee!
No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies
Pokemon Black/White
Rayman Origins
Sleeping Dogs
Untitled Goose Game

Happy contest and happy decade everybody!

How many of these seventeen games have you played?

You've seen a few topics asking for games youd recommend along the way during each round or category. Well I kept a tally of the games that did the best in them each time, so now that the contest is over here are the games from the contest we said people really ought to play.

Get out your prize money and stimulus checks -- here we go!

Our Final Four had some monster-sized games, so lets start there. If you havent played anything from our Final Four, Board 8 recommends what ended up being our contest winner and game of the century so far..

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Maybe youve played all four of them already and are still just trying to catch up on some of the other biggest releases. If thats your situation, good news: Board 8s recommendation from the games that lost in the Elite Eight is about to get a remaster later this month..

Xenoblade Chronicles

Are things at the top looking a little Nintendo-heavy for your tastes? Dont fret -- just a little under the surface is a hilarious gem Board 8 recommends the most out of the games that lost in the Sweet Sixteen..

Portal 2

During the Top Thirty-Two, we had the decades most critically acclaimed game knocked out a bit early. It gathered enough recognition to be the most recommended game the lose in Round 3..

Super Mario Galaxy 2

If these games have been feeling a bit mainstream, yo, I get it. You might have played a lot of the AAA-titles we saw do well this contest and are ready for something else. Maybe youre more into the indie-scene, in which case Board 8 insists you not overlook this game that nearly beat a former Game of the Year winner here..

Hollow Knight

More indies, you say? Well we had a lot which couldnt get out of the first round, but we had a tie for which two games to lose in Round 1 deserve some extra recognition -- including one that was once declared the best game ever..

Bloodstained
Undertale

EDIT: hate typos.
I was correctly called out.
Haiku, not hiaku.

Time to play this game,
then post in 5-7-5.
Please don't spoil me.

I'm guessing most of the people voted based on the last run dates. They see "Oh it's been 14 years since series, I wanna see that!"

Exactly my thought. The ones that insinuate it's been the longest since they've ran are generally leading here. I wonder how this would look without the years insinuated.

Also, we already had a Game of the 90s contest. It was called BGE1 and FF7 won it in 2004.

So you're agreeing with me that BotW was a tedious pile of burning garbage?

I'm saying LoZ1 is my second favorite LoZ-game (LBW > all) and I'm about to buy BotW to see what three years of hoopla is all about.

We have to be at least thankful Majora ended up winning GOTD1. We could have had BotW vs Brawl here instead.

I wanna bounce off of transience's theory of the last GotD-contest and yo's idea of a living breathing contest.

We really didn't know what game was going to win last decade. Melee, Brawl, and FFX all seemed to be the favorite in some way, but when it was looking like Brawl could actually do it Majora's Mask was in the right place at the right time to catch wind of a ship some people didn't want to sail all the way to the finish line. It earned the GotD-championship, but also it was something of an impromptu GotD-winner not many of us thought it was truly going to be GotD-material.

Meanwhile, Breath of the Wild has true notoriety from the very beginning and was always expected to win this contest. People have known this game was destined for greatness from release day going forward, and it acted like it every step of the way too.

All that is to say I suppose this sort of distance between them shouldn't be surprising in that context. I dunno, we still have a lot to process from this contest.

Nah, save LoZ:BotW VS FF7 post-FF7r for the next contest.

LoZ:BotW
FF7 post-FF7r

CT
Pokemon RBY

Let that four-pack's winner lose respectably in the championship to Frog Fractions 3.

Thanks TRE -- might not have even won a prize anyway, and I guess I could still be as low as #13 after tiebreakers. Still, beats my previous best of #23 in 2007 so I'll take it!

In a way, neither LoZ game should be so easily SFF'able. They are both games known for breaking away from their series formula, and they do so in very different ways. There are seventeen years between them -- five Nintendo consoles exist between the Nintendo 64 and the Switch. The nostalgic memories of one should have a super strength to it, as should the recognition of an instant classic. One was doubted upon release by many, causing a defensiveness among its fans...and one changed what its series might become, causing a divisiveness among its detractors.

Of course there's SFF, and probably lots of it. It's still surprising to see this level of distance between them though -- even if they are identical indirectly, which they are not.
