You know Hollywood's gonna abbreviate it more eventually too. In a few decades, we're gonna be waiting in line for the new blockbuster smash 84...and then ten years after that, we'll have a remake called 4.

Okay so maybe we'll all dead by then -- that might be best.

Didn't even recognize the hammer continuity, nice!

Heidi and Cartman was cringy, sure. While I didn't like seeing Heidi go through this, I was a fan of seeing how Cartman perceived himself as the victim. It reminded me of Fishsticks, where his imagination carries him far away from the truth at the expense of others.

Episode One...turn up your headphones and get ready to go back in time for this prequel.

I got the deluxe version of Life is Strange: Before The Storm and am ready to enter the zeitgeist. I'll begin tomorrow or maybe Sunday, but before I start I have a preliminary question.

Don't answer if I must play to find out, but if it was advertised then I'm curious: should I expect anything about my choices from Life is Strange to affect Before the Storm? This is a prequel so I'm thinking no, but man, I dunno with this series.

Looking forward to flipping out over a new voice actress soon.

My brother's hot tips for going scary with the ladies:

Five Nights at Freddy's is a good one.

Layers of Fear had no combat, it was a real scary walking SIM with simple puzzles that are contained completely in individual rooms.

The Evil Within has complex menus and combat but really really easy puzzles.

Silent Hill 2 had an option to turn off combat and another option to make puzzles easier. But otherwise it was as complicated as a Resident Evil.

Resident Evil 5 and 7 had almost no back tracking, they had puzzles but the answers were all near by. Way different from the old ones.

The Solus Project was another scary walking SIM with no combat.

I'm currently leading with four points -- get used to it boys. My banking on both Nazi and Confederacy themes were both nailed through the Charlottesville reference here -- everybody should have two points for any of those mentions.

Nobody got a celebrity reference because there wasn't one I noticed. Neither did anybody get one of the big themes this episode: these friggin' home devices people talk to nowadays.

One person got a word in their title right: last year's champ ZeroSignal620 correctly called "White" being used. Speaking on one person standing alone, I'm currently the only person banking on Cartman and Heidi being together at the end of the season...uh-oh. Plenty of time for a turn-around though! One other person currently stands alone too: WiggumFan267 has a score of 0 this week. No sweat though -- the game is young and you got some solid picks ahead!

No bold predictions landed...yet.

How do ya'll feel about this being a political episode? The Charlottesville rally was clearly referenced here and there was a courtroom moment so I'm leaning yes, but it's not like there were politicians or a true recognition of what the Charlottesville rally was actually about so I'm open to further discussion.

Oh yeah, Chloe was both morally worse than much of Arcadia Bay and yet more likeable than any of them. Interesting conflicting theories ya'll have though.

Everything I wanted to save Chloe for felt too selfish:

One friend over a town
Personal power over random life regrets
Risk more storms over removing this storm

Nathan and Mr. Jefferson were already dead before the storm and were gonna get theirs in the reset timeline. The game chides you when you do stuff less thoughtful of others too (no regrets on taking Victoria's picture!).

And then oops -- accidentally let a town get wrecked by pressing the wrong button. You owe me Chloe! I did think the save-Arcadia-Bay ending was significantly more impactful -- great directing there. My thought's that the developers wanted you to sacrifice Chloe based on their attention to detail on those endings.

So, life is strange and so is this game.

Really liked it! The game showed me early it was a different type in Episode 1 when Max first put on her headphones in the hallway, and it never really let go after that...but it especially found its groove from Episode 3 onward.

This genre needs a name, which I will now refer to as guilt-simulators...and this guilt-simulator's formula beats the Telltale formula, big time. Timed dialogue choices suck to regularly have...looking at you, Walking Dead: Season 1 and Tales from the Borderlands (only ones I've played). "Your choice will be remembered" warnings feel more sincere with Life is Strange, too -- that's really the game's big success. They allow you to see the immediate repeatable fallouts of your choices instead of gambling on one and then wondering how differently it would have gone the other way (not always that differently in TWDS1 and TftB). Changing certain choices afterward by rewinding is a welcome bonus worth mentioning too, but the weight of each issue and better believing the path will truly split is where this game excels. What Telltale discovered for modern gaming, Square Enix has refined and mastered -- they even had a great story that was built well around these mechanics. Outstanding job.

Speaking of story, I guess the main question I have is how Max saw the tornado at the beginning of Episode 1 before she learned about her ability to rewind time. I thought her messing with time was what brought the storm, so why was the vision what we were introduced to first?

I've heard before Max's dialogue is annoying and I disagree. It's often good, in character, and well acted...and even when it's bad it's still endearing and believable. Release the kra-can! Characters played off each other well through very fluid scenarios, so good job there.

Loved what they did with the music. For a genre I wouldn't normally look for, they picked some fine songs and incorporated them in some simple but exciting ways. Again, the headphones-moment impressed me so much...and that's not fancy, it was just so well-placed that it set the tone for much of the rest of the game.

I bragged on sitting earlier for setting the tone of reflecting and the character of Max. I'll also mention that you can tell people with real eyes for photographic detail made this game; you get some cool angles during these moments in a game about photography school.

So this doesn't need any answers from the peanut gallery, but my concern about Before The Storm now is a mechanical one: how do you justify rewinding for previous choices? Can Chloe even get a second chance like this for her choices? It'll be great to see her friendship with Rachel while sad to see how she misses Max in this prequel. Can't wait to find out when I play soon.

Best guilt-simulator to date. Now, why do we play these things that make us feel real tense and bad about imaginary choices? That's another essay.....

Steam version, and I'll have my final'ish thoughts shortly.

Agreed the making out-stuff was hyper-sexualized and odd. I wasn't sure if that was because I chose to kiss when I could or not.

EDIT: interesting point about needing the reminder of the memories too. I blitzed through this while you had to wait months between each episode.

I'm okay, but it scared me.

This car coming toward me lost control in the rain and swerved to the right hard into a ditch...big chunk of dirt flew into the air. It then came back onto the road and did a 360 in the middle. It continued off on the other side of the road, into the grass again. The driver pulls a fast u-turn and her car stops in the middle of the road now, car smoking at the front.

I pull over and she says she's okay -- asked me not to call anyone and said she felt fine. She was most upsrt her airbag didn't go off. I cautiously drove off from there.

If I had been five or so seconds further along the road, I would have been dead-ass hit; it was terrifying to watch it go down while slamming my own brakes.

It reminded me of when I was in high school and drove past a fallen eighteen wheeler...then five minutes later, I passed by cops and ambulances flying toward the accident. There's no way that accident happened long before I got there. Now there's a cross by the road right where that accident happened, in memory of a guy crushed in his truck that I didn't even see that day. This isn't the first time I was real close to another car's accident, but I watched it this time. =/

Everybody be safe out there and drive carefully.

Just turned the other ending on lol.

I really dug the nightmare, mostly. That classroom warping was excellent with dread. Stealth wore itself out a little by the end and was sometimes clunky, but otherwise it was fine and a nice change of pace. I loved everything about sitting down from the snowglobe to the conversation with another Max. Rewalking through my moments with Chloe felt like it was meant to be more revealing than I thought it actually was...like, yeah, Chloe enjoyed testing my powers and having me help her with them, but I akready knew that.

More tomorrow. Sleep now.

Aaaaaaaah I suck at this game. The final, most important, unrewindable choice of the game, and I picked the opposite of what I meant to do.

Aiming to keep Arcadia Bay just because saving Chloe was so many layers of selfish and I don't know that the storms ever stop...so I picked the one that said Arcadia Bay.

Sacrifice Arcadia Bay. I lose when I win. Some time warrior -- just like Max, I try to do the right thing and bad things come anyway.

Anyway, there is much more of the town left than I thought...pretty much convinced myself the town would just be missing from existence, but it still got wrecked. Chloe held my hand and reminded me of a personal time I left a girlfriend I loved and what could have been...sigh, ah well.

Game's solid. What's the word on Before the Storm so far? I want in on the zeitgeist this time if it's good too.
