Shovel Knight

It's similar to VVVVVV in that it loves being a video game. I didn't really care for the other modes outside of the base game where you play as Shovel Knight, but you get a great soundtrack and that sweet downward strike from above your enemies.

Before this match, I thought Portal 2 would give a decently close match with P5, but this near 70-30 on Mania shut me up on that end.

Arguably puts Persona in range of Odyssey if you think Mania is close to DMCV or Shovel Knight.

Going off of 2017's GotY-comparisons against LoZ:BotW, it's easy to expect SMO to have suffered enough SFF to overcome Persona 5's numbers. Also though...how much SFF happened is uncertain, these are multi-way GotY-polls, Joker joined Smash like a year ago, and Persona 5 had Royal come out six months ago. These past variables could lead to something like what you're saying -- especially in a world where a Vita port of Persona 4 became a GotD-division finalist.

Witcher 3's looking good, but I don't think this is an exceptional #2 contender-type of performance either. Skyrim was expected to do better in 2015 and I don't know how much Fallout 76 is supposed to hurt Skyrim when FO:NV is looking alright today. Maybe it hurt FO4...but Skyrim seems a little distant from Bethesda's current woes.

W3/Skyrim still feels really close and at the moment I'm sticking with Skyrim.

The years surrounding Skyward Sword are basically it. Post-TP gave us very underwhelming DS games, then SS, and ALBW was good but it wasn't a huge release by any means.

So if you consider TP was 2006 and BotW 2017...well we can call it the Dim Period for Zelda at least.

(Personally TP still ranks low for me so it jumps out to me more)

I think of LoZ:LBW as the turning point. It won GotY-awards here and elsewhere, so it's hard to call that too dim of a spot.

Being an iterative multiplayer series that builds on itself, Smash tends to have its individual games lose popularity over time (being "usurped" by the newest game in the franchise), but those individual games have demonstrated some impressive intra-Nintendo strength in their heyday.

Melee - This is almost certainly still the strongest GameCube game. Doubt that will ever change.

Brawl - Was the strongest Wii game for years. It beat Twilight Princess directly in a games contest. Can it do that again? No, but it raised the Nintendo banner highest for years.

Smash Wii U - Is BotW considered a Wii U game? If so, this is the #2 for that console. If not, it's the clear #1.

Ultimate - Relative to other games on its console, this is probably the weakest Smash since 64. Obviously, that says a hell of a lot more about BotW and Odyssey than anything else.

If BotW is doubling up for comparisons on the Switch and Wii U, we can double up LoZ:TP for the Gamecube too and remind ourselves SSBM would beat LoZ:TP.

LoZ:TP may beat SSBB now but we don't have a lot of supporting data for it. Wii U HD remake and the assumption SSB-games drop when the next edition releases...main points here, right? That could overturn their 53-47 match but I'm not certain of it.

I also wouldn't take for granted LoZ:LBW beats SSB43DS. Probably, but I always thought the 3DS-version of SSB4 was getting under-played in strength considering how available and portable it was versus the Wii U (plus the series had good-working online play for the first time with the 3DS-version).

The voters are legit, no problems there, but many of the rally-makers -- not all -- are looking for personal gain in these rallies. MAH BRACKETS to the extreme, like when Ulti picked Monika to win a contest with the gameplan of trying to rally for her.

I would imagine there was no motive to try to get them to rally, since nobody has Shovel Knight over Odyssey.

And here lies one of the biggest problems with rallies -- the motive. There are a lot of rallies started because somebody wants to be proven right in the hopes of prizes or bragging rights rather than because it's someone's favorite game.

My thoughts: It's Ultimate's match to lose. Melee, Brawl, SSB4WiiU, and arguably SSB43DS were the strongest games of their systems. Ultimate is a GotY-winner that just got done nearly doubling a GotY-winner -- one that was also the #2 LoZ-game this decade -- and Ultimate has also recently become the best-selling fighting game of all time. I expect Odyssey to be stronger than the Galaxy games -- 2017 isn't done impressing yet -- but we haven't seen Mario have a bigger game than a Smash game on a system since the Nintendo 64 and Ultimate out-seeded Odyssey.

Super Mario can still be #2 on the overall Nintendo hierarchy, but Smash has been #1 or #2 of the past twenty years for Nintendo. Odyssey's the one that has to prove itself here more than Ultimate..

It's still early, but ME2 is getting the type of win it needs to probably be considered the favorite in a close match next round as long as RE2/Bloodborne stays this close. I'm not convinced RE2 has today down yet though.

What indications do we have about how the first two hours of RE2/Bloodborne should have gone? Because many of those voters will still vote at a later time.
