I wonder how close to the Benoit treatment some of these people are gonna get.

I was debating this elsewhere. One way Vince is approaching the Benoit-treatment:

"You are not authorized to access this page."

I wonder how much further they may go regarding removing clips, references, and all that. It's hard to imagine his complete removal, right, and we still see Harvey Weinstein's name featured in the early credits for movies like Pulp Fiction...but also, any keeping of Vince on camera is not going to look good for WWE.

I just made a fourpack-topic and paired BG3 and ER against each other -- didn't mean to hijack your question there, sorry, wasn't on purpose. It's a good question both in terms of strength and also having our past two GotYs compared (assuming BG3 holds on).

I'm giving BG3 the benefit of the doubt against ER because today is more impressive to me.

Do you all think Witcher 3 holds up it's power from last time? I think I would pick BG3 above it.

Squexa and LightningStrikes bring up a good point and counter-point about this so I don't know. I did just yesterday say I'd take DS > Skyrim at the moment due to Starfield's current reception in a post-ER era of GameFAQs we're in, but also I don't think ME3 did long-term damage to ME2 or it wouldn't have won its division.

Hmmm. Not sure. I'm gonna give BG3 > W3 the edge because of 2023 being a stacked year, but that ain't a great reason at this tier of games.

Been nothing but stalls and cuts since the first five minutes until just now. I think our GotY is about to take the lead, and I wonder if we're seeing our new Game of the Decade front-runner here too -- probably a battle between BG3 and ER.

Let's stick around six years and see if we have a contest to test the hypothesis.

I personally haven't played BG3, but I also feel like I haven't been doubting BG3's chances too hard here -- favored TotK's chances but have said before BG3 would impress. Also said yesterday BG3 cracking 42% would have me considering BG3 possibly winning here, and now BG3 just got its first cut.

TotK was huge this year. BG3 was also huge, but it was from a series nobody ever thought would compete with LoZ.

Either way TotK is getting rocked by BotW. Makes me wonder how many Zelda games fit between them.

Don't agree with this take. 2023 was a big year for games and LoZ:TotK is clearly at the top even if not necessarily alone at the top. I ran a board poll here about two months ago with BotW VS TotK and how favored one was over the other -- TotK won it like three to one, with many of its poll votes saying they liked it much better than BotW.

BG3 also won lots of awards off of this site and was getting pop culture references too. Anecdotally, it broke through to my friends' group in a big way too.

BotW could win against TotK, and it probably does in my mind...but as someone who didn't get into TotK like I did for BotW, I don't buy that TotK can't at least keep close.

Would people still take Skyrim over Dark Souls in a rematch?

After the success of Elden Ring and the failure of Starfield -- to the point where FromSoftware's latest much smaller game Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon almost doubled it two days ago -- I wonder if the mood has been changing enough to allow this. Fallout hasn't been as well-received recently like it used to be either.

Skyrim does still do well with those polls about the best game with a 5 in in though and improved with those between 2020 and 2022, however.

Think I'd take DS > Skyrim in this moment where Bethesda recently made people have this big a twist from hype to reception...

We're nearing the eleven-hour mark of today's poll and have well over half of the expected ~7,000 votes so far:

BEST OF 2023: Game of the Year
Baldur's Gate 341.78% 1859
Resident Evil 413.1% 583
Super Mario Bros. Wonder11.82% 526
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom33.29% 1481
TOTAL VOTES4449

Can BG3 get half of RE4's votes? RE4's voters are already picking RE4 over the Switch's two biggest games today and BG3 is the only game on systems with RE4. How many survival-horror fans will cross over to the Nintendo option? I think BG3 can get 50+% of its voters -- that's 6.55% or more, putting BG3 at at least 48.33% with this estimate.

From there, can BG3 break off 1.68% of Wonder's 11.82% here? Gotta think that's possible.

We probably have a real battle tomorrow.

FF16 was screwed and it's a shame to miss SMRPGR making an appearance in yesterday's poll.

BG3 looks legit. Of course, Wonder is LFF'ing LoZ:TotK here, but BG3 is still more than doubling RE4 when FF16 wasn't close to doing that. It's a big year for games, and BG3 takes #2 to a well-received Zelda-game while taking GotY awards with lots of other places -- no shame in that.

Takes #2 unless you think Wonder beats BG3, anyway, but I'm not ready to subscribe to that.

I'm glad we have a ticket in, but I think it will go over better if we could give a full list of 8 snubs to run in a complete "extra games" poll.

Already on it. I mentioned...

Final Fantasy 16
Hogwarts Academy
Pizza Tower
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed (DLC, not sure if it'd count)

...and also included a link here for their own ideas of what to include:

https://www.metacritic.com/browse/game/all/all/2023/metascore/?page=1

This was also in addition to sharing the half-year-GotY poll where FF16 already beat RE4 which won the Winter poll and tripled SF6/D4 which made it into the Spring poll.

I don't expect FF16 to get in off the mention of Hogwarts, right, but I tried to make it clear FF16 was a big snub and there is still a path for rectifying this problem.

On the current polling, I think I'd take SF6 > Pikmin 4 and Diablo 4 > Sea of Stars...so I figure the level of competition for LoZ:TotK and BG3 they're each facing are similar.

This predicts a safe win for LoZ:TotK...but with SMW as well as possibly a combination of MPR/Pikmin 4/SMRPGR in the overall-GotY poll? BG3 might get pretty close when they first face off, even if the final-GotY wouldn't be as close.

Kingdom Hearts III got snubbed, but it also didn't have great review scores, so that's probably why that happened.

Good catch. Quick Metacritic comparison here:

KH3:
83 on reviews
79 on users

FF16:
87 on reviews
81 on users

This is unlikely to work, but hey, new administration: I'll make a feedback ticket and see if they'll add an extra poll for popular snubs like FF16 and Jedi Survivor, maybe any other notable snubs we're forgetting. Maybe if they take the top two from each poll and then the top one from this extra poll? I dunno, we'll see if they do anything with it.

FF16 was snuuuuuuubbed. It wasn't going to win GotY, but this is arguably the strongest snub we've seen for GotY in a long time. In the past decade, we have seen both FF15 and FF7R win GotY, and FF16 did well enough in the half-year-GotY-poll to justify a shot here.

Leonhart4 posted...
SBAllen would have never let this happen

What was the strongest snub under SB's administration anyway? First thought is Assassin's Creed from 2007. Snubbing FF16 here feels more egregious both in legacy-franchise power and individual-game reception.

I don't like this format change. If your release date's too close to a powerhouse, it's just over for you even if you were also a powerhouse -- that feels more unfair than doing it by system/genre/new IP/remaster/whatever like most of our other ones have been. Also, they could have been doing this on April, July, and October the 1st but didn't (I suspect due to new leadership but still).

If there is a second-chance poll between the #2s and maybe #3s of these four seasonal polls ahead with the top one or two of that second chance poll entering the GotY-poll, that would help alleviate that for me.

I appreciate the primary system, but I wish I could vote across party lines instead of only people within the party voting for party-candidates. I think that would stop a lot of the more extreme side of things.

That has pros and cons of course. My values lean one way more than the other, right, but we also probably wouldn't have Donald around and that would have been real nice in recent years. It also would help minimize politicians from flip-flopping between primaries and general elections.

Wouldn't be perfect in practice but I would like to see how that would work for us.

For customer survey reviews this is objectively false. Companies demand perfect scores across the board. A glowing 4-star review is literally viewed the same as a 0 while a no text 5-star review is perfect.

Can confirm.

Had a job before where they expected two thirds of your customer surveys to be perfect scores across the board. If you didn't, that's just one of the many metrics they would hold against you ranging from a "coaching opportunity" to grounds for a write-up. No amount of quoting your other surveys' reviews -- or even quoting the same surveys' glowing reviews, or pointing to the recordings of the interactions to confirm what happened -- none of it mattered compared to the metric. Yeah, your one-up might look at those things for other reasons to pick away at you, but they do not work as a defense in a survey that's mostly 5/5 but you got a 4/5 for not being able to solve their problem. Even if their problem is their Facebook account was hacked and you go above and beyond what your actual job training is to try to help, nope, doesn't matter. Same if they straight-up misrepresent the interaction in the review -- doesn't matter.

Companies encourage you to have your best interactions leave a survey and to minimize your worst interactions from considering a survey. From there, all you can do is hope the number-averaging gods are kind because they do not care about anything beyond the metric, even when they hold the proof that the metric is not accurate or enough.

I like the thought process of looking at a puzzle as a narrative. What do you see first, what is your perceived goal, what do you find out while pursuing it, has the goal changed, how do you work through each obstacle to solve the puzzle...I can see that.

As someone who only dabbled in Baba Is You due to it's harder difficulty, Game Maker's Toolkits has a good video on Baba Is You:

Ah, different taste in platformers. Celeste was great! I had it as #17 on my Game of the Decade list, but I also had The End of Nigh at #14, Cuphead at #11, and Super Meat Boy as #1. Celeste was more consistent in quality than at least those first other two I named and was really successful in including narrative and boss fights to that type of game. Those later post-game stages are just too hard for me though with all the heightened challenges and mechanics coming in.

Oh well, I still like my Celeste Mountain hoody.

Been replaying Super Meat Boy for probably my fifth time now and am currently beating the hell out of it worse than I ever have before. Game of the decade for me (and Binding of Isaac literally being #2).

That said, to your point, yes, it's weird that it got as big as it did. Why do I have a shirt with Meat Boy on it? Why did I buy the spin-off game with Dr. Fetus as its only character?

Because they're awesome, I suppose.

But still weird. "Kind of gross" is fair to say.

Inspired from Johnbobb's indie game topic.

There a bunch of puzzle games out there, and there's a lot of variation. What factors determine where a puzzle game falls on its difficulty scale? And how do you make the puzzles good no matter what its difficulty is?

I'll mention a few puzzle games I like in trying to start the conversation.

A HARD-DIFFICULTY PUZZLE GAME I THINK IS GREAT: The Witness. It has a simple concept, it trains you early on for what you need to do, the concepts keep expanding through different details, those details blend together in certain areas requiring a full understanding of its expectations, and with enough attention to detail it expands much further than it originally presents itself to become not just a puzzle game but a discovery/recognition game. It gets very hard repeatedly, but most sections start off easy enough to get the initial concept of the new mindset it wants you to adapt (plus you have a lot of flexibility in going to a different area if something is initially too hard).

A HARD-DIFFICULTY PUZZLE GAME I WANTED TO LIKE BETTER: Stephen's Sausage Roll. It's hard right off the bat, but its options are restricted and guided early enough to where it worked well for me anyway. I really liked this direction...until the difficulty spiked far beyond my ability to conceive answers. The meat tower-level is fairly early and it does not let you proceed without beating it, which felt like both a much longer level than the others up to this point and needing to learn several new approaches to problems I had not used or internalized yet. It also felt more open, which is good sometimes but also a lack of restrictions there was more confusing at that stage. I know the game gets much harder and a lot of content is ahead -- I would have liked to ease my way into its other puzzles ahead, but I couldn't handle that spike in difficulty.

A MEDIUM-DIFFICULTY PUZZLE GAME I THINK IS GREAT: Braid. Yeah, I think Jonathan Blow is terrific for puzzle games where you take a small gasp when you figure the puzzle out. Its hardest difficulty comes from optional content and the occasional end-of-world puzzle. That said, it is a much shorter game and its twelve-puzzle-pieces-per-world format do cement a certain number of easier puzzle pieces each world. It also has speed run options built into the game so it understands there are fast repeatable solutions available.

AN EASY-DIFFICULTY PUZZLE GAME I THINK IS GREAT: Puyo Puyo...or to me, better known as Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. It's more of a multiplayer/high-score kind of puzzle game like Tetris and Bejeweled than a single-player journey against the game's individually-crafted puzzles. It's a different game every time but the concept is the same: make 4+ beans touch a bunch. It's hectic at any skill level, but it gets more strategic and has higher stakes as you up your understanding of how to better connect beans. Simple to learn, difficult to master.

Also, there are videos I like about designing around dungeons and Metroidvanias by Game Maker's Toolkit called Boss Keys. It's not the same thing as puzzle games, but there is puzzle-adjacent theory:

They also apparently have a playlist specifically on puzzle games I haven't watched before...will post that here too and watch them later:

Anyway, just opening conversation starters. What factors makes a puzzle game good for you?

andylt posted...
Best Adaptation
Castlevania: Nocturne (Powerhouse Animation/Netflix)
Gran Turismo (PlayStation Productions/Sony Pictures)
The Last of Us (PlayStation Productions/HBO)
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (Illumination/Nintendo/Universal Pictures)
Twisted Metal (PlayStation Productions/Peacock)
I could see this be competitive but it feels like it's gonna be TLOU.

GotY-battle is gonna really be between LoZ:TotK VS BG3. I think GameFAQs and the Game Awards will diverge here.
