Why is Binding of Isaac not being questioned here?

I know it's hard to imagine something going from trash to turbo trash, but that game was still semi relevant in the indiesphere in 2015. It's not hard to imagine it having gotten weaker in the intervening 5 years.

I'll jump on this one and say with SMB and BoI being my two favorite games of the decade and having been burnt by both of them this contest, a side of me's been wondering if Ed McMillan's impact was simply bigger in the first half of the decade.

I get that argument KP, it makes sense. Still, pj's got a good point too -- this was Witcher 3 like two months after facing the Binding of Isaac:

My comment was more about the smell test -- I took it to barely lose to FO:NV pre-contest and was off by a few percent so I come at this humbly, but now we're near the end and it feels like a good match with Portal 2. RDR2 has an argument for improving too since RDR1 was a borderline division winner. I've done a lot of doubting SMG2's strength, but despite GoW's strong showing in 2018's GotY and understanding it's earned its praise GoW hasn't exactly struck me as sustaining that same type of showing this contest.

I don't trust western SFF as concept yet and it looks right where it landed. Stats aren't there to match feelings, granted -- I just think it looks fine now that we see more context on what getting blown out by Witcher 3 means.

Yeah, it's weird -- Galaxy was beloved after the controversy of Sunshine and earned itself a sequel, but it never showcased that much strength. Even its GotY-win, in hindsight, had Halo 3 and CoD:4:MW splitting the vote or else it would have been more competitive.

I think Mario just got replaced in the Nintendo hierarchy -- not in an all-time Series Contest perspective NECESSARILY, but the end of the 1990s ushered a new wave. The NES was Mario's system, then although LoZ:LttP > SMW here SMW was packaged with the system, had a "sequel" in Yoshi's Island, and had its first huge spin-off in Super Mario Kart so Mario still had the crown. SM64 revolutionized the 3D transition for the industry, but then LoZ:OoT came out and LoZ never looked back as the leader here. That same year, Pokemon RBY came to America and we have a world of people who still care about 151 pocket monsters. Meanwhile, that next year introduced Smash, and two years later SSBM came out. In comparison, It took five years to go from SM64 to SMS.

Mario games are bigger than Pokemon games most of the time here, but sales-wises without looking I would expect Pokemon to outsell Mario more on that casual front now. Contest-wise, Mario never met the high-points the LoZ and SSB games hit either with hardcore fans. Mario lost its lane (besides platformers), not through any fault of his own but through the strength of Nintendo as an industry leader.

My thought is expecting strength out of Tropical Freeze was a mistake Some people liked it a lot, but it doesn't strike me as having that big of a following -- not here, anyway.

I've been re-soured to the series though. I wasn't crazy about the originals (though seeing DKC1 that first time was amazing), fell in love trying Returns on the Wii for like two levels, got Returns on the 3DS, and now think of it as one of my biggest disappointments of the decade.

That bias worked for me this time...sure didn't in DKC2's four-pack the contest before though.

Xenoblade went from losing to Donkey Kong Country 2 in 2015 to winning its own division. People are already impressed by that, but I think it's also being understated how incredibly well it held up against Ultimate. Nintendo SFF can be brutal, and even if we roll with the notion that it holds up better than 'traditional' Nintendo properties it still outperformed A Link Between Worlds by 6% and only underperformed Mario Odyssey by 4%. That's damn good, and overall it's come a long way.

I'm excited to play its remaster coming out soon, and I agree it handled its SFF well. That game'll continue to go up.

Metroid as a series isn't so active anymore, but Metroid Prime was ahead of its time for years after its release and there aren't a lot of Nintendo games I would take to beat it that released ever since it came out.

Super Metroid thrashed SMG and took LoZ:MM to the brink while Samus went toe-to-toe against Mario in our last contest. Metroid would do worse in a Series Contest now, but I don't think people here have forgotten the impact of Metroid Prime.

Crusader Kings 2 wouldn't have have a chance in my mind, and like...I would have flip-flopped against some of the other indie games there not named Hotline Miami which I would have been sure would beat it.
