They went really hard to make it seem like characters' stories had some amount of interconnection in their stories and were doing stuff together, but the game's more like 8 completely separate mini arcs, of heavily varying quality, with some potential banter between cutscenes.
It was talked about like a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI, where all the characters were actually working towards a common goal. Jason Schrier actually put out an article called "Octopath is no FFVI" before the game came out and people tried to roast him. He was totally right
The game's not irredeemable, the art is very good, there's some good music, and imo it's fun, but it kinda flopped on its main deliverable. There's also just many strange design decisions, like the open overworld dungeons that are just empty of a boss unless you find the one person in the game world to talk to open that fight up.
I wanna emphasize, some of the stories SUCK lol

Even though Octopath Traveler was borderline trash, it was still a straightforward game that didn't forget that a game has to be fun to play as well.

Why do you say that Undertale is pretentious? I thought it delivered its story with much more grace and skill than many RPGs.
And the game is super fun, the only time it's not is genocide grinding which only 2 bosses are locked behind.
I'd much rather fight Sans than the boring token abomination final boss of Octopath. I never even beat that.

So the game map feels big and open ended. I was more or less enjoying myself until Nemesis showed up. I don't know how you're supposed to stop him except by spamming dodge rolls. It seems like he can stun lock you with his punches and he also has a ranged tentacle attack that pulls you back in front of him.

My parents never taught me good cleaning habits and yelled at me when something got bad enough that I told them there was a problem so I've grown up disorganized and reluctant to clean. But thanks to coronavirus I'm off campus and gonna be in my room for like seven months now so I might as well make it civilized.

There is so much dust >_> my fan was so gross. It will be a lot easier to sort stuff once it's all dusted but all I have is this one raggy microfiber cloth. I have to clean something then take it downstairs to soak and dry it before continuing.
Cleared out an old toy box in the corner filled with junk and trash. Need to finish clearing my old wardrobe filled with clothes from years ago and kindergarten puzzles. Need to clean under my bed.

Well the one guy was summoning huge gushes of water and can also evaporate people by touching them. I dunno once powers become "big" like throwing skyscraper sized floods or ice cubes at people my eyes kinda glaze over.
