They're a mess mechanically and there's a bunch of stuff that doesn't even work the way it's supposed to (Psychic being immune to Ghost when it's supposed to be weak to it, Focus Energy lowering your critical chance instead of increasing it, perfect accuracy moves missing 1/256 times, etc.) That's not even getting into all the balancing issues. These games aren't very good and I don't have any desire to replay them, but it is still Pokemon so I'd probably take them over an average game. I mean how does something age badly and also "is still the template for the franchise" 25+ years later. It gets docked because its ridiculously easy, psychic type is OPed, certain type attacks barely exist (pin missile is the only bug type attack that is kinda normal iirc, and bug is supposed to beat psychic. It also has low damage. Also all bug types are poison pretty much which psychic ruins for some reason. Night Shade is one of the only ghost attacks and it does fixed damage, etc). Also, the red/blue gimmick is used to sell more copies and thats about it.
