Tennessee's governor just signed a bill that will require any business that shows transgender customers basic dignity to post signs warning people of that fact.

https://twitter.com/AriDrennen/status/1394699249422508032

Also signed bills that opens public schools open to lawsuits if they allow transgender students or staff to use the bathroom or locker room of their gender. As well as requiring a 30-day advance notice if sexual orientation or gender identity will be mentioned in class and allow parents to opt-out their children.

This is the dumbest shit. You going to require businesses to check genitals on hire?

glad to see slightly more pro-palestinian sentiment than there used to be. I remember one of the first topics I made on B8 was a scathing article about settler violence. People jumped down my throat for it. I feel like that was the topic that cemented my notoriety as a horrible troll poster and also (inexplicitly) started the guiga meme.

Ah yes, parents love nothing more than the illusion of control.

Meanwhile...said students, showing up to the next class with their friends: "So, what'd I miss?"

More like this:

https://twitter.com/ErinInTheMorn/status/1394707589762584581

I edited it out of the original post because I'm a bit confused on the current language in the bill. At one point it laid out specific requirements as to the format of the signage that would result in the above. It was too late for me at the time to check the signed version to see what it currently looks like after I heard there was some edits to that section. (Update: As far as I can tell, it was not edited. I'm assuming whoever I saw that from looked only at the summarized version of the bill on the TN legislature. The exact text on the site retains the precise language below)

Edit: As far as I can tell from looking on the TN Legislature Website, as well as a Business Insider Article, yeah, this is the text: https://www.capitol.tn.gov/Bills/112/Bill/HB1182.pdf

It specifies the red background/yellow NOTICE taking up the top third, and that the bottom 2/3's must have that exact statement in centered, boldface, all-caps type.

I'm fine with this as long as mentions of anything related to heterosexuality and cisgender identity also require the same advance notice. Not because it's a good idea, but because the amount of stupid notices that would have to go out would be amusing. Just imagine sending out warnings and opt-out forms every time someone with a gender or a spouse was going to be mentioned in history class.

Oh how about your kids will learn what the school teaches and if you don't like it you can quit your job and home school them. At the absolute MOST parents should receive "here is a list of things we will cover with your children this week/month/year". Not to ask permission but to keep the parent informed about what their children are learning. And if the parents object to a particular thing well it's still going to be taught to them, but the parent can make a note to spend some time with their child to explain their opinion on the 'dangerous' thing their child learned about in school that day.

House vote on the 1/6 Commission just finished. Passes 252-175

Dems: 217-0
GOP: 35-175

McConnell has reportedly come out against it though so probably dies in the Senate? IDK, you might have the Trump convict votes for it but you'd still need a few more to get 60 even if you got all of them.

Edit: I see LotM beat me to some of that. Had my post open as I was watching the vote.

Edit 2: That said, Republicans killing this would be an own goal IMO. As I mentioned before, the Dems already watered this commission down to a joke that would allow the GOP to stonewall and obstruct since they have veto power on subpoenas. If they really do kill it in the Senate, I imagine Dems just go the route of setting up Select Committees where they'd have more power by virtue of how committees work. (This was the route the GOP used for their 4385 Benghazi 'investigations.')

Prepare for disappointment because I'm expecting 80+ votes against it. (Also, historically, Congress has never succeeded in blocking an arms deal in this manner - but under the rules this vote will happen and theoretically would only need 50 votes though would be subject to veto if it somehow miraculously passed both chambers.)

Are the Im actually progressive but also Im a diehard democrat who is ok with politics shifting slightly right people just wildly lazy (theyd rather support Dem party line than let the Dems lose/learn), stupid (Charlie brown kicking the football), or liars (not actually concerned about progressive ideas, just want the people who are to stfu)?

Like yeah, they won the Presidency, but I've yet to see any of them acknowledge that the Obama playbook cultivated Trump, this prevent defense shit doesn't work when the clock never runs out.

Seeing Bernie's speech the other day, seeing the KHive talk shit about him on Twitter, and then seeing Joe consistently walk back his promises like we feared it's just like...hey, maybe this shit is hopeless? At what point do we just let the GOP takeover to instigate genuine change as opposed to frogs slowly boiling in a pot?

Tony, I really admire your bizarre, unfounded optimism that, if the Dems just rolled over and gave into the whims of a subset of the party that can't be arsed to come up with a winning strategy on a national level in a Dems-only contest, then surely the Dems would get stronger and would be able to overwhelm the immovable death cult that controls the other half of the country.

Like, I wish we lived in your fantasy world, where Bernie Sanders was president, and progressives controlled the congressional and senatorial agendas, and after four years of that the Democratic base DIDN'T either become disillusioned by the party not giving them what they signed up for, or just DIDN'T just stop caring because they don't view the GOP as an existential threat the way the GOP views ALL Democrats.

That would be so much less stressful than reality, where the Democratic Party, by virtue of the Democratic voter base being fucking SHIT across the board (centrists who don't want to go too far left because they're conservative and this country is conservative, progressives who think anything to the right of their world view isn't good enough), is constantly two years away from losing any semblance of power, and the GOP never needs to adapt or change their strategy when THEY lose, or even have any sort of platform, because all they need to do is keep their psychotic supporters whipped up into a frenzy of hatred for ALL DEMOCRATS, and they win.

It's absolutely the Dem voters' fucking fault that we can't sustain any sort of positive forward momentum before backsliding to GOP rule all over again, and you're insane if you think the same shit wouldn't be happening right now if a perfect progressive fantasy land were instituted.

I dunno, still the politicians, but with torches and pitchforks? This past year has shown that politicians are way more receptive to protesting, harassment, people demanding they resign immediately after sex scandals, and armed insurrectionists more than the passive fear of losing to an opponent from the other party, which is really where most of the voters come in. Politicians are of course terrified of losing primaries but it's much harder to beat them there.

I'm mainly pushing back against the idea that dem voters are responsible for our coward liberals because that's just an inherent problem with US politics that hasn't changed no matter how many Ls they take.
