i mean if that's the defence for not taking them down... what's the argument for not putting up new Hitler statues? My city has no Hitler statue, so don't we then need one to "teach others about who they are and what they did"?

Manhattan DA has convened the grand jury that is expected to decide whether to indict Trump, the Trump Organization, and other execitoves at it should they present criminal charges.

Convened for 6 months though so idk might still be quite a while.

This is separate from the NY AG's investigation of the Trump Organization.

Well, that article seems to be missing a lot of critical context!

NASA was originally expected to pick two companies to build a moon lander for the purposes of redundancy (as they usually do in other major projects) but unexpectedly chose just one - SpaceX/Elon Musk.

NASA, for its part, said it had intended to choose two companies to contract with but Congress hadn't given them enough money to do so so they just went with one.

Furthermore the Seattle Times, reporting on Cantwell's amendment at the time (so two weeks ago) specifically notes that the amendment authorizes but does not appropriate $10bn to the lunar lander project. Which, translated, means they're not actually spending additional money here - just telling NASA they're allowed to shuffle whatever funds it already had been given some more (which is kinda shitty to do to NASA because it would require them to cut other programs in all likelihood)

Also, less formally - i'm pretty sure every company that designs moon landers is owned by obscenely rich people so like that's probably not an avoidable issue unless you just scrap the project to return to the moon entirely. again, as is, elon musk has the contract.

Also, as I understand it the $10bn would be for both contracts - SpaceX and National Team (There was a third company involved in the bidding here but my understanding is that their design was inferior so 99% it'd be National Team for the second bid). Blue Origin (Bezos) is just one part of National Team (the rest are defense contractors so ymmv whether that's "better.")

Basically, I just wanted to take the time to shit on The Intercept's article because as far as I can tell it's just complete garbage reporting.

military technology has driven innovation too, but we spend entirely too much on it to an even greater extent. considering how horrendously wasteful the military is, it's not implausible that the same advances could be found by investing that money more intelligently

As far as I know, private aeronautical firms built stuff based on contracts and designs by NASA engineers.

The SpaceX and Blue Origin situation are their own, fully in-house space teams, and the Federal government is essentially giving them a massive rebate for their existing costs, that doesnt even include giving NASA spacecraft, thats a separate additional cost of who knows how much.

Basically, the billionaire space guys get to fuck around on a space program, get their money back, AND get paid.
