I wouldn't say that.

I think there's a very real issue with boomers/older people not realizing the extent of both the cost of living/inflation rises from "back in the day" as well as how little wealth the younger generations possess relative to what they had at the same point in their lives.

The extreme, bordering on dark comedy, example is of course when Trump said that young people just graduating from college pay "$12 a year for [health] insurance" and on other occasions said "$15 a month" both of which are just lmfaooooooooooooo.

It may not be fair to think the level of delusion is that strong in a lot of older people, but I definitely get the impression a lot of them just don't realize how much things have changed since the 50s-60s and unfortunately these people hold much of the power so they set policy with those beliefs.

Edit: And of course, being rich on top of that so you never really had to seriously grapple with those issues adds another layer of out-of-touch to it.

A condo/apartment in nicer parts of Las Vegas goes for 200k. In LA, it's like 500k, meaning it's gotta be at least that high in a NY borough.

I can't help seething with jealousy whenever I'm confronted with an example of these people who have either inherited everything or started 40 years ago (when it was possible to own a home on like $11 an hour) and are now sitting on a mountain of equity. They have no clue what people today are going through.

There is just no situation that anyone could interpret as owning a home for less than 100k. I mean, you can rent an apartment for a year for less than 100k, but nobody would ever think that's what you meant.

See, my first thought was that maybe he thought apartment buildings were why the actual median was so much higher than he thought. Like, in his mind most houses are around $100K, but then larger buildings with multiple units were also being counted as a single house and that's why his guess was off. So his first thought would be that it was a "gotcha" question based around a silly premise and he was trying to figure out what dumb thing they did to get those fake numbers.

But that just goes to being so out-of-touch that he can't realize the difference or even be cognizant of the problem! Plus I don't believe in just making excuses for him by going "Well, what he actually meant was..." He said what he said. He could have admitted his mistake and clarified what he actually meant. But he said what he said and I'm not going to just bend reality to make it something sensible. Doing that precludes the very real problem that he has no idea what the fuck he was talking about!

but i 100% honestly didn't want to relitigate some trump shit i was just using it as the extreme-case example of out-of-touch. I already said I don't think it's probably fair to apply that level of insanity to most!

I live in a definitely lower half top 50 population city and would never in my wildest dreams assume that a home could potentially be average at 100k. Brooklyn would be an obvious massive higher number. Nobody that out of touch should ever be allowed to be employed in such a job, and the fact that the rich regularly employ folks with so little idea of reality into positions of power should tell you all you need to know about meritocracy, class, and the lack of working class influence of the nominally more working class party. Reminds me of Rahm Emmanuel being given the job of Ambassador to Japan, something he has absolutely zero experience with. Just nepotism and party favors. The working class needs to take this party over, lest it become as hopeless as labour in the UK.
