So I went to an Aldi's (supermarket) the other day, and the sign at the door said you don't need a mask if you're vaccinated. Awesome. So I walk in and I felt like a mutant as I was literally the only person not wearing a mask. No one said anything to me but I still felt grossly out of place.

The next day I was at a strip mall and every store (Target, Best Buy, another supermarket, etc.) still all had signs to wear a mask.

We're never going to get beyond this if places don't actually start allowing vaccinated people to go maskless.

I feel like I'm going to just have to start not wearing one and then have someone tell me I need to, if necessary.

This has absolutely nothing to do with getting beyond this with case levels where they are at in most places at this point.

Unless we are checking vaccine records at the door most places should maintain masks indoors for now.

I'm in a highly vaccinated area and case levels are literally as low as they've been since the beginning of the pandemic.

I guess we'll just continue with masks for healthy, vaccinated people forever because we're never, ever getting rid of COVID completely.

In MA, some regulations were dropped last week, the rest are gone on the 29th. The mask order will still be required at hospitals etc.

My experiences - went to a diner yesterday, it was packed, first time they had a line since regulations started.

HS track and field meet, crowded, no masks, great to see. Lots of softball and baseball games at the fields, few masks. Good to see all around - remember, even those masked families are out with the crowds.

Ice cream stand, have to wear mask while in line and then you can go off to the side and take it off. There was one father/daughter MAGA family that didn't want to wear masks in line and didn't get service.

I imagine I'll keep wearing a mask indoors for a little bit. I'm a 90+ year old person's caretaker, my daughter is in a little 'pod' with another kid who gets taken care of by someone at-risk, and I'd like to visit my grandmother with less worry.

I think you'll see a lot of people still wearing masks because they feel like it's the right thing to do for a little while longer, but happy to shop at a place where other people don't have to.

Some of those big box stores are well versed in litigation and aren't going to follow "you can take off your mask if you're vaccinated" guidelines just yet. And yeah I think they are going to cater to the people that are hesitant because those people can shop online just as easily.

I don't think we've had consistent leadership on the COVID front. And the biggest consistent sane voice is Fauci, and he says we'll be back to normal next May.

It's gonna be a weird summer for a lot of people, but hopefully we can stay in good shape for the fall.

Been in the 40s for a month now and vaccinations are down to the point where it's only being done in pharmacies and you dont even need an appointment because demand is so low.

Oh yeah it's been a long while since I posted a update on my health state since I was diagonised with Covid back in October
Looks like I have Long Covid and it sucks
I usually have a "it will get better" "the body will heal itself" mentality but after half a year I think it's time to cave in - I have a lung health check next week
So the doctor did some basic tests and said everything is fine
But he referred me to lungs CT scan and a breathing test just in case
Today I had a breathing test and the doctor said the results are good
And next month (god damn it) I am going back to the first doctor and show him the scan results
And if he tells me that the scan results are good too...then wtf
I am not imagining this. Also I am totally not sure if I want them to find something wrong or not
Like...I know there is something wrong. But if they can't see it maybe it isn't that bad and will pass?
Or they just suck?

But then suddenly over the past week we've seen only 4 cases.

Yup.

Considering the average vaccination rate of the countries set to have the most athletes at the Olympics and the fact the IOC is giving vaccines to athletes prior to the Olympics we could have the situation where it's the Japanese public who may be too dangerous for the athletes and not the other way around.

I can't wait until the 7-day average of cases in the US falls to 4 digits. And hopefully that truly does happen here in a couple of weeks. We're also getting to an interesting point now with the weather because June 9th was the beginning of the trend back upward last year heading into the summer wave.

Though a key difference from last year is that back then states like Texas, California, Arizona and most of the South were very clearly heading upward starting around mid-May. It was just that the earlier, more critically hit places in the US were trending down at a faster rate up until that date.

That isn't happening this year, as far as I can tell.

It's unlikely for the US to have a bad summer. 41% of the population is now fully vaccinated with another 10% waiting to get a second dose. Add in that over 10% of the population is confirmed to have gotten covid naturally (and many more probably got it and didn't test for it) and it's clear there just aren't the numbers to reach the same heights as last year.

Of course there will be local flare-ups as the distribution of vaccinated/already infected isn't even.

Canada is about a week away from surpassing Israel in terms of 1st doses.

Only 6% with the second dose, though that pace has quicken and will likely spike once we run out of eager people to get their first (possibly in 2-3 weeks or around 70% of the total population)

I've attended a few outdoor gatherings (graduation ceremony, town trade fair festival) and it was like 98% mask-free. It was really nice. I'm glad to live in MA. No one wears a mask at work (it's not a crowded environment, otherwise I'd probably put one on). Still wearing a mask to the store though it's definitely becoming less of a thing. I haven't been to a store in a week but when I went, it was probably 50/50.

Fortunately there won't be the same case-to-death rate that was seen in previous waves since older demographics have higher vaccination rates, but there's still a pretty huge number of people susceptible people in states like Missouri. Supposedly the Delta variant is causing more severe disease, but I'm still on the fence about how real that is. I remember the same alleged trend of "more frequent hospitalizations among younger people" going on when the British/Alpha variant was taking hold and then finally after a few months that was disproven.

But until then it should be treated as a possibility.

The vaccine works, so of course right on cue another variant magically appears so they can try to have another lockdown.

The downside of vaccines (and antibiotics) is that it selects for resistant mutants to become the dominant strain. Yearly injections will become a necessity, just like the flu shot.

That's pretty concerning, it's a small sample size, but that lines up with the current vaccination rate of the UK (source was Public Health England so I assume that's where those numbers came from). This basically suggests that the vaccine doesn't provide much effect against the variant (again this is a very small sample size)

If there are more vaccinated people than unvaccinated people in the area (which there are in the UK among adults, and it's even more skewed towards older, more vulnerable populations) that is still perfectly consistent with the vaccine providing some protection against death from the delta variant.

(To make this more obvious, imagine that the entire population was vaccinated; clearly in this case all deaths would be among vaccinated people regardless of how protective the vaccine is).

Assuming those are UK numbers, 84% of the adult population has at least one dose:

so the raw numbers being higher isn't as concerning as it looks. Infection rate and deaths per infection would have been more interesting to see
