We have two approved vaccines. Pfizer and Moderna. Both are mRNA vaccines with approximately 95% efficacy. This should be the last topic hopefully for this virus. Yay!

I feel like this topic series will reach about 15 before we're truly done. Though maybe not since there seems to be a lot less conjecture to be made about the state of things than there were back from March-June.

I really appreciate this thread from Trevor Bedford about what the future will look like as we get disparities in immunity levels worldwide from vaccine distribution, and antigenic changes the virus may have. If it seems a little dour at first, just keep reading because it's largely just precautionary and more in the realm of something for virologists and vaccine manufacturers to keep in mind across the next decade.

It's good context to keep in mind considering the news of a variant identified in the UK.

PSA since Ive seen a few things indicating that people might have a misconception about this: once you get a vaccine it takes a while for you to acquire immunity (a little less than two weeks for the RNA vaccines, and then of course you wont have the full effect until after the second dose), so its important not to let up on distancing etc immediately.

With that in mind, I have little doubt it's basically everywhere now. Several countries in Europe are suspending travel to and from the UK because of it, but I'm already seeing reports that it's confirmed in Netherlands and Italy. Speculation is that it's around 70% more transmissible, no word on severity changes from the variant, it's likely the vaccines still work on it.

70%? Jesus

If true that makes me a lot more pessimistic about getting to herd immunity through just vaccination (given current polling on how willing people are to be vaccinated)

Yeah, that's what the UK's health authorities are claiming based on figures of its spread in the South East region of England.

It would certainly explain the rampant U-turns that have been seen in several European countries when their increased controls appeared to be working in bringing down the daily case counts and then they suddenly... weren't working anymore.

And it of course got worse even faster for the countries who relaxed those controls even a little bit already.

All of them. She isn't sure if it is a sinus attack or covid. (Her son was negative). I told her to just go tomorrow and tell them she has lost smell and taste at the beginning of the shift before she clocks in. If they send her home, to go get tested. She is still trying to talk about going to her sisters for Christmas, in between crying fits about possibly having it. I told her she should have taken it more seriously and hopefully even if she doesn't have it that maybe the fear of having it now will end the not taking it serious and vaccine nonsense. Doubtful! But one can hope!

The best course of action is to get her tested. The son could have been a false negative or she could have gotten it from someone else.

I hope the talk of seeing her sister was more hoping she doesn't have it rather than her wanting to go regardless...

Loss of taste and smell is covid's most specific symptom. She very likely has it, and it would be extremely irresponsible for her to go in to work or to her sister's.

She knows she isn't going. She had a rude awakening 2 days ago. She was all upset her sister didn't invite her to her birthday, and I was like duh... Your son was just possibly positive. They don't care he came back negative. What are you expecting? I think that's when she realized that the people talking nonsense weren't gonna be nonsensical when it came down to it at her expense.

Of course, this probably ruins my new job since they aren't going to take kindly to me not going to my first days of work if she is.

She did have sinus stuff the last day or two. (I think she actually gets allergies, but she refuses to get tested for it because she hates going to doctors for whatever reason).

No joke this conversation has happened.

Her: Doctors say I get sinus issues all the time and need medicine for it.
Me: How do you know you never go to them.
Her: when I went 7 years ago they told me I need to see an ENT for it.
Me: they probably said you need to see an ENT to try and see if that was actually what was going on
Her: No, I need medicine. I can't just take normal sudafed for it. It does nothing. The only thing that seems to work is sudafed with antihistamines.
Me: maybe it is just allergies.
Her: No it is sinuses.
Me: Okay, well, I mean antihistamines is mostly for use against allergies. Maybe only that works because you actually just need an antihistamine for your allergies and it's not actually a sinus infection. You should get an allergy panel done to make sure.
Her: it's fucking sinuses. God you never listen to anything.

So, who knows. I could see losing smell to a sinus infection or allergies. She ran a neti pot pretty extensively the day before. But, the loss of taste I can't imagine anything but covid.

She can't smell vinegar which almost made my eyes burn to smell, and I told her to drink a small bit of it to see if she could taste it, and she said very faintly and had no normal bitter reaction to it. = /

So, I am guessing she is positive.

I thought your new job didn't start until March, Corrik. But anyway, sorry to hear.

She most assuredly has Covid, but her overall sinus issues might be chronic sinustitis, which I have. But yeah, she needs to go to the ENT and have a CT scan to get that verified. Probably shouldn't take Allegra/Claritin D/Flonase everyday.

Virginia is still getting a little worse for infection spread and it sucks. Positivity rate has been about in the 10-12% range for weeks now.

So it's not getting as bad as acutely as other places have so the likelihood of the whole medical system getting overwhelmed is not as high. But it's still agonizingly prolonged.

Oh, but so you know what I am dealing with. The day after my girl asks her mother if she will pick up stuff from the store for her. She asks her to just let her know when she is coming, she will sanitize the card and leave it on the porch for her, and she can drop the groceries off on the porch and the card when done.

NOPE.

Her mother shows up with no warning, literally just walks straight into our house uninvited (number pad lock she knows the combo to), makes her daughter come give her the stuff personally... despite my girl screaming to leave the house she can't be in here or she will get sick... and her mother retorts "Come on... who cares. It's not like its a serious thing anyways." Refuses to leave for like 10 minutes. Goes to the store. Comes in again without invitation. Refuses to leave for 5 more minutes. Finally leaves.

Of course her mother also went to christmas stuff wherever also and so on. So, if she were to get it... yeah. My girl is wearing a mask 24/7 basically though and isolating mostly to our kids room out of the way, with my kid staying down stairs with me.
