I don't consider Harris to be a genuine politician either (few are), but bending to public sentiment isn't the worst trait in the world in a field of old liberal ideologues like Rice. Demonstrably it has led her to one of the most progressive records in the senate, so even if I don't trust her to lead I'll take her as a vehicle for progress and she certainly does show a better grasp at handling certain issues like Defund the Police than most dems.

What's the "left" on Marijuana? The majority of Republicans also want it legalized. The only major demographic that disagrees are people born before WW2 ended.

I'm not crazy about Harris and she will definitely be president before 2024 (assuming the ticket wins enough of a majority that trump can't reasonably contest the results), but it's bizarre to me that she's the deal breaker for some.

Elected officials will never be as left as my desired policy positions. But until we get past fptp, it's what we need to do to prevent fucking Republicans from having power.

Not a fan of Harris. In fact I actively dislike her, but yeah...It's either Joe or Donny, and I can't wrap my head around not voting for Joe unless his pick was astronomically terrible.

Now that Harris is the VP pick, I really hope the Senate doesn't end up split 50-50. Technically the GOP would keep the majority until her seat is filled, and whatever stunts they'll pull to delay seating her replacement probably won't be good for legitimate government and such.

But if you could choke down Joe Biden, Kamala is really not worse.

That being said, the Dems DID do the incredible thing of nominating a cop when support and general affection towards cops is in decline.

Id say Trumps re-election chances did get a bit higher today.

My confidence in Trump winning has really been restored a lot over the past few weeks. He's taking very aggressive action on the economy while Biden is doing nothing. Now finally Biden does something, and it's to select Kamala Harris as his VP pick. It seems like the Democratic establishment didn't get the message from 2016, so they are trying to ram the exact same ticket down our throats - hopefully they'll get the message this time around so we can have an honest election based on policy ideas in 2024.

trump's response was partiuclarly terrible, though. he kept being a "THE FLU IS WORSE" smartass for way too long and started taking it seriously way too late. as a result, there's now over 5 million covid cases in the US.

also, i didn't even say it's necessarily a fair response from US voters, i'm just describing what i think is going to happen. the US being the country that has by far the most covid cases in the world is terrible optics for trump.

Okay, so a few years ago I watched a preliminary hearing in California (a hearing where a judge hears evidence to decide if there is enough evidence for a felony charge to proceed forward to trial or if it should be dismissed). Only the prosecution presents evidence at the preliminary hearing because if there is any evidence at all, they will approve it to go forward. So in this case, a store owner testified that he found saw a man (I think he was a minority, not 100% sure) take a $1 marker from the store without paying. So he chased the man into the street, whereupon the man threw something at him (I think the marker). No injuries, but the man was charged with felony assault.

Guess how much bail was set at?

$50,000. For a $1 marker.

Sorry Kamala, but as attorney general you've got to take responsibility for such grotesque policies existing. The truth is, $50,000 bail for a $1 theft has nothing to do with justice or public safety - this is about, in the words of Hillary Clinton, bringing people "to heel." This is about obedience, nothing more.

Harris was the best choice once you weighed all the various considerations like the Senate and balancing the ticket, IMO.

Duckworth was like 1b. If it was neither of them I'd likely have been sighing on some level. Unless it was Warren in which case I'd have very conflicted emotions because policywise she'd be the best pick (i mean i supported her of course i'd think this) but strategtically I have always been vocal in saying I felt it was a bad idea.

The things the left dislikes about Harris - not without reason! - like her past as California AG are things that play well in a general too.

Sure, but it wouldn't stop them from calling him out as a rich old white man. Even back in 2016 people were attacking him for owning three houses. No one of Bernie's level of wealth believes they are rich. Like no one. He's about 2 orders of magnitude poorer than the Clintons.

Sleepy Joe isn't very wealthy either apparently, although who knows, maybe Hunter is. Getting paid $600,000 a year to attend a couple board meetings is pretty sweet.

So Bernie is willing to tax people of his own wealth level - that's what makes him different from the rest. Hillary has a couple hundred million or so, so she goes after billionaires. The factory worker making $40,000 a year goes after the tech worker making $200,000 a year. Bernie is willing - happy - to tax himself, and that's what makes him so great.
