Even as a progressive, I think progressives overall are more toxic than moderates. That's not to say there aren't toxic moderates who constantly say things about how 'delusional' we are, and how they don't need us. But we're in a position to be more toxic because we are constantly losing. Winners usually aren't toxic because they don't feel the need to lash out. Progressives need to be better, though, because it's turning people off a good cause. Our cause doesn't need to tear people down to build it up. It stands on its own merits. Medicare for All, Higher Education for all who want it, nobody should starve because they can't afford to put food on their table.

I'd say that's not really true at all, plenty of toxic winners! It's just a narrative that has been pushed. If you are pushed off good causes because someone was mean to you, congratulations you are a bad, vain person who doesn't care about other people.

I had a longer post written, but I was rambling, so I'll keep it shorter. Basically, my parents are both Democrats in their 50s, and to them, the progressive movement either writes them off as irrelevant, or actively demonizes them.

The current progressive movement has a lot of good ideas, but the problem is that it's designed to appeal specifically to a younger crowd, and it doesn't do a great job of marketing its ideas to an older audience. And the thing about that strategy is that it relies heavily on picking up the notoriously poor youth vote in favor of casting aside a solid and reliable voter base. That's why Biden was able to swoop in and win the nomination...because the moderates who felt like Bernie's progressives didn't care about them coalesced around a moderate candidate, and those moderates made up a majority of the voter base.

And I know that progressives can and will make the same argument back: "Moderates don't care about us!" But the difference is that A. the moderates vote more regularly, and B. as much as it sucks having to settle, a moderate candidate is still going to do more for progressive ideals than a Republican ever will, whereas a progressive candidate and a Republican candidate leave the moderates in the middle where both options are equally unpalatable to them.

Well the point I was trying to make is that statistically it seems that most people who share both my political affiliation and my demographic have supported gay people for as long as they've been alive, so to see other people try to lump me in on the opposite side of what is probably the political issue I am most passionate about feels very insulting.

I will say that in heavily blue areas (and maybe not even just heavy blue), progressives have been able to win primaries

It's just that America as a whole is not heavy blue, and also Bernie's campaign in particular really shit the bed on this one
