Sony trying to do their own movie with Tom Holland as Peter but also unconnected to the MCU would have been a mess. Even more so if they tried to connect it to Venom after already basically cutting him off from all connections to Spider-Man

How? All they would need to do is just mention Spider-Man stuff. Tom Holland is the best one so they needed to make more movies with him.

Everything about their handling of Venom annoys me, but the special effects were neat. Going ahead with Venom without Spider-Man was just a wtf choice, not unlike when WB uncoupled Catwoman from Batman because they dragged their feet on a Catwoman movie after Batman Returns and Michelle Pfeiffer had gotten old-ish by then.

It's not really THAT crazy. Venom's an alien symbiote who bonds with a user to form a pair that's stronger than the sum of its parts. That's pretty easy to work with even without any connection to Spider-Man in the story. You just need to come up with an excuse for it to be on Earth in the first place, then give it a host. Eddie's as good as any, especially if you stick with the suicidal despair and need to get revenge on SOMEONE aspects of the character (it doesn't HAVE to be Spider-Man). Doubly so if you're skipping his initial villain phase to try and play the character as the anti-hero it sort of evolved into over time.

(And that's assuming you don't skip directly to "Agent Venom" and just have it merge with someone like Flash.)

The original connection to Spider-Man gives you a reason to have web-slinging and the giant white spider symbol on the chest, but those are easy to drop (especially since Venom rarely seems to use webs anyway as opposed to slimy black gloop pseudopods and hitting things really hard). If anything, you're almost better off dropping the connection to Spider-Man, because Venom as a character really doesn't fit well at all with the MCU version of Spider-Man (just like it didn't fit with Raimi's 1960s-inspired version of the character).

As for the other, the problem with the Catwoman movie wasn't that Batman wasn't in it. It was the fact that they went for a weird supernatural angle where literally the only actual connection to Catwoman was the name - and the fact that the writing was atrocious and the acting was terrible. It would be incredibly easy to write a Selina Kyle Catwoman movie where you explore her roots as a young girl, coming from a broken home, living on the streets, learning to steal to survive, and ultimately developing into an adrenaline-junkie cat-burglar. Then you throw in the stereotypical cliche where she watches over other innocents on the street (which is straight out of the comics), and you've set up motivation for her to eventually use her skills to steal from the evil to protect the innocent. Play her as a Robin Hood-esque character, potentially with a touch of greed where she's not entirely noble (maybe eventually setting up an eventual future interaction with Bruce Wayne when she steals something from him).

Obvious scenes for a movie like that is where you establish she had to learn how to fight to protect herself (thus justifying the eventual future fight scenes), and if we're going full-on cliche, she's taught and protected early on by a sympathetic gang member who protects her, and who will inevitably die later to help motivate her revenge arc on the bad guys. Or you could skew closer to the comic origins, and have her train at the local gym with an old ex-boxer/fighter (who inevitably dies).

Introduce your cliche sidekick character of a young street girl in danger of falling to drugs or prostitution (or worse) who she feels protective of in a sisterly fashion, and the movie's almost written itself. With bonus points because now you've got the option to have a "Catgirl" character in a later film.

This shit really isn't that hard. It's only when a studio has disdain for the material that you get movies like Catwoman or the 1980s Captain America.

Sure, the origin doesn't *have* to be coupled with Spider-Man's, but he's so tied to Spider-Man that it seems weird that he's handled separately or, at least, when compared with other character less-tied to the Spidey franchise. Granted, the other half of my issue was just the general handling of the material. If the movie had been better (or if they had worked in a way to give him spider motifs without Spider-Man), maybe I would have had an easier time getting over it.

Man, fuck Google and its shitty interpretation of what I'm looking for. I type in "best way to stack cardboxes" and it gives me suggestions for cardboard boxes for moving. I then add "ccg" to the end and the top results are still moving related. I then figure, "Okay, maybe cardboxes isn't one word and that's what's screwing things up," but nope, still getting crappy unrelated results, although now at least there are some ads for cardboxes and other storage among them.

Now I guess I'm just stuck going to Reddit or another site and asking. Specially I'm worried if some ways risk damaging the cards more than others. Stacking them on their smaller side seems to make the best use of space, but having the boxes stand vertically (without any stacking) just feels safer. I guess once I do more organization, I can clear a space and just arrange them vertically.

Google Lens and Translate via my phone camera is actually quite good. I've actually used Lens to accurately identify wildlife and plants on hikes and I've used Translate to translate instructions where in a Homer Simpsonesqe moment the English instructions were ruined.

I have however found that Bing is seemingly better on pure image searches though.

I left Yahoo because it wasn't giving me what I needed and I can't imagine going back to try it again. And some of my other preferred engines, like DuckDuckGo, have their own intrinsic issues (in DDG's case, the fact it doesn't save results -- its main selling point -- means that it can never build context for my search patterns, whereas Google or Yahoo would eventually get things right). That and I can't trust Yahoo after a decade of almost-annual massive data breaches.

Then there's stuff like Bing which basically just runs a Google search and pares down some of the results. As such, I imagine it's equally bad at understanding keyword context, plus... I don't have a lot of trust for Microsoft despite using the OS.

When it wasn't on mute I played Octopath Traveler, and pretended that it was a better product, the show, not the game. I did watch New Japan, and those matches were actually good. Commentary, not so much.

All Elite starts tonight, and I hope that it's good. I'm tempering expectations, but competition is good for the industry. Right???

A Pixar phone is one that comes to life when you aren't looking and does stuff with your other things that come to life when you aren't looking. Sometimes it's dirty stuff. Ironically, sleep is the one thing you don't want to do because that's when you're really not watching.

Got to check out Brightburn. I like the homicidal take on young Superman it presented, even if the reasons for Brandon Breyer to snap in the first place wasn't all very clear or convincing. I also watched Dark Phoenix, which was pretty much garbage, as advertised (although the final fight scene had some cool parts).

I checked out Yesterday as well, which isn't so much as a good movie as a feel-good hit of dopamine for all things Beatles related. Finally, I saw Ad Astra in theaters. The "Apocalypse Now in Space" is apt, but was way more enjoyable. I also never liked Apocalypse much.

Saw the trailer for Birds of Prey today, which goes waaaaaaaaaay overboard with Harley and has kinda turned me off the film as a result... is what I'd be saying if I didn't realize that Mary Elizabeth Winstead was playing Huntress. (Black Mask also makes for an interesting villain choice.) I can understand the approach, since Harley is a proven commodity and most non-comic fans likely haven't even heard of anybody else in that movie (although Huntress was in JL/U... and has had some live-action TV appearances... and I guess Montoya had a major role in Batman T:AS and apparently was in Gotham).

And, in what's likely a controversial opinion, I think Superman T:AS was better than Batman T:AS, largely because it was more consistent in terms of quality and handled an overarching story much better. Batman T:AS had a number of great standout episodes, but a lot of its other episodes were duds, it had several revamps, and the show doesn't necessarily flow well one episode to the next.

Brightburn has been on my radar since its first trailer, but I think it hasn't hit NFI or any other streaming service I use and I cbb to pay for it. Dark Phoenix intrigued me simply because the more recent X-Men movies have been surprisingly decent despite their goofy elements.

The title (and what it implies about the film) is kind of terrible (and pretentious as fuck), but I'm more scared off by the fact that it's an unapologetic sequel to a bad film, which kind of shits on the source material.

The movie isn't really Birds of Prey. It's Gotham City Sirens with Birds of Prey characters and a ridiculous emphasis on Harley because Margot Robbie is a popular actress.

It also doesn't help that the vibe I'm getting from the trailer is that someone heard how popular Deadpool was and is now trying to ape that tone and style without really understanding why it worked, so there's going to be a lot of cringeworthy meta bullshit. Though I admit it's often hard to really get a feel for a film from trailers alone (because trailers always lie).

I had seen her in Scott Pilgrim before Final Destination 3, so I'd already developed that weakness. And, looking over her wikipedia page, she had done a LOT of stuff I'd seen before I finally noticed her (for lack of a better term)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Elizabeth_Winstead

I'm not sure what I saw her in first, mind you, but I had watched Passions for a while (possibly at a time when another actress played Jessica Bennet so I can't count that), I saw A Good Day to Die Hard, Monster Island (which I mostly remember for the Adam West cameo and the initial bug attack), I had seen some of Wolf Lake, and I'm pretty sure I saw Sky High at some point but my memories of it are kinda fragmented (it could just be a composite of the spoilers -- which I definitely read -- and the trailers).

She has a certain charm to her performances.

So yeah, Ultimate NES Remix isn't really what I thought it'd be -- as far as I can tell, it *doesn't* have a mode where you can randomly play challenges. Championship Mode just features the same 3 events each time: A coin challenge from SMB, a coin challenge from SMB3, and a challenge from Dr. Mario. It's kinda super-lame.

As for the normal challenges, the easy ones are so basic as to be flat-out insulting; I'd say that they exist mostly to introduce players to the mechanics of these games, but some barely even do that. And, to a certain extent, it feels that a good chunk of the content exists as a teaser so players will go out and buy the individual games themselves.

By contrast, the remix stage challenges are pretty fun... but there are only 25 of them in all and they're gated behind getting stars from the other challenges (and most of the content is gated in similar manner; there aren't that many games available from the start and, from the lack of empty spaces, I was kinda scared that I had somehow misread how many games were represented). Granted, there are some interesting normal challenges as well -- such as being asked to defeat bats with bombs while not taking damage in LoZ -- but they're kinda few and far between. That said... I think if an Ultimate SNES Remix existed, I'd probably buy it >_>

I haven't tried Speed Mario Bros yet. After playing one Remix stage were Mario runs by default and you can only control how he jumps, I was hoping that Speed Mario Bros would be like it... but apparently it's just a faster version of SMB1 (which was more or less my understanding)

At any rate, I think I've played Ultimate NES Remix like 2 or 3 hours total since it arrived, which is still a lot more than I've played other games (or, at least, other than ones named Pokemon Go) in the past two years or so.

Rough day at dialysis. I yelled at a nurse, and might get reassigned to a different clinic. She was a wench to me all morning long, and she got in my face after I politely told her to walk away. Her boss even left me alone after I politely asked her to do so as well, but she came back, and I lost my cool. 4 hours of painful dialysis and no sleep will make you a bit grumpy. I was wrong to cuss her out, but it wasn't without reason.

Apparently they want me to run an extra hour each day to meet some bull crap clearance number, and with my wife's work schedule it's literally not possible. My brother died earlier this year, and he can't pick me up from the grave, my other brother, Oreon, works overnight, and can't pick me up. It's literally not possible, but no one listened.

I said it's not possible, they said more words that did not include, "I understand" or "We can figure something out" and after a few minutes I snapped. It was not a good day. Not sure what's going to happen, or what we are going to do, but an extra 3 hours of painful chest needles a week isn't happening.

It's good to see that Jim Cornette is apparently still finding work.

Cornette's actually mentioned that the main reason he doesn't work more is because he loathes flying, so if a job is too far away from Louisville and expects him to travel on a weekly basis, he won't take it. Especially since he doesn't really need the money - he's still making pretty good coin doing his podcasts and from selling merch, and he's never been a big spender (meaning he's saved a lot of his past earnings). So he can easily pick and choose what jobs he takes or appearances he does.

He probably only took the NWA job because it's the living incarnation of the type of wrestling he loves and constantly supports (and condemns every other form of modern wrestling for not being), so he has a strong vested interest in helping it succeed. And because they'd doing old-school tapings where they wrestle maybe once a month and then cut it up into a weekly show, so he doesn't have to travel as much.

My favorite part of the Raw/Smackdown Draft is the fake boardroom cut away outrage after every pick between the USA Network executives and the Fox Network Executives.

(You picked Alistar Black over Daniel Bryan. The outrage! Why didn't I think of that? *Paper Toss!*)

Saw Joker. Definitely feel it's an over-hyped movie. Yeah, Phoenix is fantastic, the cinematography is great, and the sharp jabs the film wants you to feel land their mark mostly. But it's definitely not as deep and powerful as many are claiming, and doesn't really have much to say besides that beaten down people with mental illnesses will eventually snap or kill themselves which, yeah, no duh. Also feels like it diminishes the scheming intellect and raw danger the Joker have. Arthur doesn't feel like the Clown Prince of crime, just a damaged loner with a gun.

Decided to splurge on the board games Instanbul, Arboretum, and Azul, since Amazon had some price slashes on them recently.

The WWE is unique in its size so it has a large enough viable roster to split into brands and, because it has brands, it can play up kayfabe elements like drafts. It's hardly the first time that they've done this.

So on Tuesday, my folks and I picked up a really nice couch for cheap. Yesterday we acquired a beautiful bed frame in need of a queen-sized box spring and mattress; also some matching drawers are part of the set. These are going into my new apartment.

Next up, I need a new modem, a monitor for my PC (or for hdmi-capable gaming systems), headphones for gaming, a video capture card so I can start streaming, some new pots and pans, and eventually some new bookcases.

I have to budget it all with rent and security deposit, setting up electric and Internet, supplying myself for groceries and keeping the place clean, and eventually paying my folks back for all their help getting me up here. Right, and there's the address change stuff and all that.

Fun, fun.

The WWE is unique in its size so it has a large enough viable roster to split into brands and, because it has brands, it can play up kayfabe elements like drafts. It's hardly the first time that they've done this.

More specifically, they started doing it after buying WCW back in 2000, when the influx of new talent gave them enough toys to play with that they could split them across their existing two shows and still run two full cards.

WWE loves the idea of the brand split because it allows them to run two house show circuits instead of one (and thus, in theory, make more money). It also (again, in theory) allows them to build more stars, because you get to put the spotlight on twice as many top guys, as opposed to just having the same top guys main event both weekly shows. Fans generally hate the idea of the brand split, though, because it creates the perception that any show you go to will only have half the wrestlers you actually want to see, and it makes it harder for certain match ups to happen (ie, if one wrestler is on Raw and another wrestler is on SmackDown, you're much less likely to see those two wrestle each other). Also, having two top champions, two mid-card champions, two tag champions, and two women's champions (and now women's tag champions and a 24/7 champion as well) kind of devalues individual titles, because there's so damned many of them.

The current draft/emphasis on the brand split is coming because one of their two shows is still running on USA network (like it always has), while the other has now been bought by Fox and is showing on the main Fox network (which is the most exposure the WWE's had since NBC showed Saturday Night's Main Event - and the current deal is better than that one was, because it's prime-time). So there's more pressure than ever before to limit crossover between shows. And also because USA wants Raw to keep its existing focus on being an "entertainment" type show while Fox wants SmackDown to be more "sports oriented".

The frame is generally cheaper than the mattress + box spring combo =p

Plus with the lack of external competition, they've got to something to hype their product via a rivalry, right? =p

Honestly, my only major issue with the split roster is the titles thing you mentioned. The mid-card titles don't matter, but I like having a definitive heavyweight champ. And the fact that the wrestlers only have inter-brand matches occasionally makes those fights seem more special, like the Champion of Champions match to decide which champ is the realest... which they then shat on by having Booker win with Kevin Federline's (a minor league only famous for Britney Spears's baby daddy) help.

I'd agree with this, but I also think Meaning of Life is the best of the three.

That was the original intention (ie, without WCW, you instead promote inter-brand rivalry between Raw and Smackdown to simulate the same feel of competition and fan investment).

In practice, this has never, ever worked. Partly because the WWE has basically bungled it from jump, but also because fans have never realistically given a shit about the separate brands, or valued one over the other in a meaningful way (especially since it's mostly the same fans watching both shows anyway).

Probably because it doesn't really go in for some of the more blatant comedy of the earlier two. At times it almost skews into straight up philosophical musing, which is a large part of what puts it over the top for me.

Holy Grail may be the goofy one that D&D nerds enjoy quoting around gaming tables (at least in the old days), but Meaning of Life actually makes you think and feel more, without having to sacrifice laughs. And then they throw stuff like Mr. Creosote in to keep it all from feeling too pretentious. It's some of the most intellectual humor you get out of Python.

The three films are almost an evolution over time, which might be because the performers themselves were maturing over the decade or so they were making them. Holy Grail is mostly goofy, Life of Brian is kind of looking at the world, and Meaning of Life is almost introspective.
