5 is the best star wars movie. Pretty much everything we know as the emotional palette of the series is established here

7 was incredibly sterile. Outside of han's arc I don't think I felt anything during the entire movie other than spectacle. The villains weren't threatening at all and few things made logical sense. This is outside the lore disappointment that the galaxy has been "soft reset" and the original trilogy rendered meaningless. Granted, it hit plenty of neat visual notes and did what it had to do- re establish what the series was about and prove star wars still had what it takes to sell toys

6 had some fun space battles with great choreography. This is even though Ewoks sucked and I found the battle with palpatine cheesy as shit. "Hey, here's exactly how to lose, Luke... deww it!" Every time Luke was about to turn, palp would shout something dumb and bring him to his senses. I also hate many of the changes they keep adding to the movie in subsequent editions to loop in the prequel trilogy

4 was a solid foundation that remained logical and had some soul to it

The prequels are just a hot mess we don't need to get into. Just watch the red letter media thing.

Rogue one was fun, but it felt even more like an avengers/fast and furious movie or d20 campaign than usual. I'm totally fine with Jedi (who have precognition) effortlessly mowing down generic soldiers. My suspension of disbelief goes away when 'random person with gun' does the same.

It's hard to create a one dimensional ranking, and I haven't seen 6 in a while...

5 > 4 > 7 = 6 = rogue1 >>> 3 > 2 = 1

Finished II and III

AOTC - As I briefly touched on earlier, the Anakin/Padme scenes are probably even worse this time around. It's not a surprise to anyone, as their dialogue in this movie is the stuff of legend. The film ends with another uninteresting, messy land battle, but at least it's better (or less worse) than the one that caps off PM. The Sith apprentice, Count Dooku, also says things, and despite Hayden Christensen's wooden deliver, at least Anakin and Obi-Wan have a more interesting relationship than the latter did with Qui-Gon. Obi really carried this movie, one that I now think is a good step ahead of PM.

ROTS - The best of the three. It's not a great movie by any means, but I actually felt some real emotion here. My gf and I both felt for Obi-Wan when he learned of Anakin's villainous turn. This movie also featured the best PT Anakin performance (a very low bar, but hey at least he's not horrible here) and the best action scenes. It's still stuffed with camp (I really need to look into "high ground" - it just CAN'T be as random as it seems... ok, it can and probably is), but I think the dialogue and delivery here is improved as a whole over the earlier films.

Overall, whereas I was unsure about 1 and 2 beforehand, I now think it's a clear case of 3 > 2 > 1. The first two are still bad, but ROTS pleasantly surprised me and crept into this "omg it might actually be good" territory. It's closer on the spectrum to TFA than it is to EpI/II.

I - 1/5 (irredeemably horrible)
II - 2/5
III - 3/5

Agree 100% with NeoElfboy btw, couldn't have said it better myself. Like I do think their part of the movie is terrible, but the actual Ewoks aren't really the problem.

I don't even hate Jar Jar though (kid Anakin is the one to hate on, not him) so I'm pretty forgiving of the typical hate targets in Star Wars.

I had planned to rewatch the movies before Episode VIII came out but apparently you can't just one-time rent any Star Wars movie online on any legit sites other than TFA or Rogue One. You have to pay like 20 bucks apiece and permanently purchase them, and I certainly ain't doin' that for the prequels.

Yeah. I don't hate the ewoks, I hate the ensuing ridiculous land battle centered around ewok tech

Honestly I think the Ewok scene could've been decent with a different presentation

Lucas could've learned a lot from current day WWE-- Ewoks cause the distraction finish allowing Han and Leia to roll up the empire as it were.

Having the Ewoks just basically kick their ass was dumb though.

this is a new video (it's newer than this topic!) showing all the things that changed from Lucas's early cut of A New Hope to the release

where did they get all this footage from the early cut? I've never even heard of a lot of this stuff. Treadwell? What the fuck is that?

I'd always heard that a talented group of people had taken George's mess of a movie to fix ANH and Empire into the masterpieces they are, but this really sells it.

I just watched Rogue One

It was okay. Better than TFA. But the first 2/3s of the movie was a combination of completely scatterbrained and boring so I only liked it so much despite the last 1/3 being actually pretty good. Robot was a good character. The dialogue where they were bantering was funny at times-- not sure about the serious stuff though, kinda flat.

Probably still worse than Revenge of the Sith but I'll have to digest it.

Whenever I catch Rogue One on TV I just think "yeah, this is Star Wars" and change the channel.

Whereas once when I caught The Force Awakens on TV I got drawn into the story for a good while.

Also once I caught a "top 40 sci-fi movies" as voted on by British viewers on TV, and strangely, Return of the Jedi was the highest-ranking Star Wars film there, at #4. The Empire Strikes Back was #5, the original was #13, The Force Awakens was #15, and Rogue One was #17. Just thought it might be interesting to share.
