I liked the relationship between Rey and Finn in TFA a lot.

It's no worse than Leia consoling Luke about Obi-Wan who he knew for like a day after she lost her home planet.

Another fair point (I've never even thought about that), but I think it's more permissible in ANH because we had never seen, heard of, known anything about, or cared for Alderaan or its people. The ensemble cast was the main story. Chewie and Han are huge parts of that ensemble cast, and when the fandom has cared about and loved their friendship since 1977, it just makes sense to focus on the grief of one if you're gonna kill off the other.

Finn's my favorite new character. Poor guy and his three-part, four-year, multi-billion dollar friendzoning.

Rey literally friend zoned the dude while he was in a coma at the end of the movie

she calls him "my friend" right before she leaves to find Luke

I disagree. Who else are they supposed to go to for consolation? The only people there are Han who is hardly friendly, Chewbacca who they don't understand, and 2 droids

That said, the only scene I found actually insulting was the cool-down after Han's death, where Leia chose to mourn her husband with a girl she's known for one day and not his BEST FRIEND FOR THE PAST 40 YEARS. Thank you for making a structured Star Wars film, J.J. Abrams, but screw you for doing Chewie like that.

For what it's worth, Abrams did go on to say that that was a mistake he made with the movie:

well if it turns out Rey is Luke's daughter or whatever it'll be more understandable since Leia would be able to sense that or whatever maybe who knows

Yeah the "Leia doesn't mourn with Chewbacca" thing really bothered the hell out of me, since like one of the things I like about Chewbacca's character so much is that they tend to treat him like he's another person and not some kind of weird alien without feelings, and I think they forgot about that there

You know, now that I think about it, perhaps my biggest problem with Episode I's writing is that the sense of humor is just so kiddy. Jar Jar Binks has no reason to exist (at least in this movie) other than to be a source of cheap laughs for kids. I don't think I laughed at all the entire movie. Not to say I watch Star Wars for the humor, but the OT has a good number of laughs, and I'm in the middle of watching Episode VII, and the comedic writing is so much better than anything in Episode I.

Rogue One had the funniest part of the movies. "Are you kidding me? I am blind!" was great

TFA, and to perhaps a lesser extent R1, both dependent on Marvel humor. Marvel humor sucks.

TFA was kind of a mixed bag as far as humor goes.

for instance, finn's "i'm a big deal in the resistance" rant was a cringey attempt at humor, but han's "listen, big deal" comeback was great.

What exactly defines "Marvel humor" anyway?

Like I almost feel as though he has a point about the humor being similar - apart from it sucking, because it does amuse me on the whole - but I can't actually put my finger on what it is.

If I had to characterize "marvel humor" I'd guess it's "random assorted quips and banter during otherwise serious situations"

Which to me is the best kind of humor if done with the right amount of moderation, which I feel like generally Marvel tends to hit, but I guess some people disagree.

It's the type of quippy, "witty" jokes those movies are liberally peppered with. I don't know how strictly it can be defined, but you know it when you see it.

Agreed. When I first saw TFA in theaters that part where Poe does the "Who talks first" line nearly killed it for me. It was such a smarmy "modern" joke line that felt so out of place in Star Wars. The Last Jedi does it too with him trolling Hux over the communications link. I really dislike those scenes, and it's a shame because the movies do have some genuinely funny moments that don't rely on that tired kind of writing so I wish they'd just avoid doing it.

yeah, when poe was basically a star wars star-lord at the start i was like "oh god is the whole movie going to be a guardians of the galaxy ripoff?" (it wasn't, though!)

(of course a lot of people said the first guardians was a star wars/flash gordon ripoff, but i digress.)

Marvel humor is where you "unexpectedly" put a quip in a scene that's otherwise supposed to be tense so that it defuses all tension. I put quotation marks around it because Marvel became so predictable with it that it's never unexpected anymore.

I guess you could argue that it's not that removed from one-liners that Bond or Schwarzenegger would say before killing someone, but something feels different about that.

Bond or Schwarzenegger are more just like taunting or celebration of impending victory. They're generally done after tension has already been diffused so it doesn't have the same effect.

Marvel stuff will just do it all day, even while still in peril. I feel it generally works in their case better than it does in Star Wars because they're pretty much meant to be larger than life, but there are definitely moments where it's overdone. Age of Ultron in general is the poster child for this because the villain is also doing it so literally no one on screen is taking anything seriously, but I don't mind the heroes doing it generally as long as the villain is mostly playing it straight.

Recent Star Wars is a bit more hit or miss because they're not super heroes imo. Hell the closest one to a super hero (Rey) is probably the one who is taking things the most seriously.

What's different is that kids who grew up loving Bond and Schwarzenegger movies are adults now, and they have to work their asses off every day to make it in the adult world. They don't get to have Cinnamon Toast Crunch or Lucky Charms for breakfast every morning and play video games all day, so they have turned into bitter curmudgeons.

Someone has to be. Not necessarily the villain but none of The Avengers are doing it so in the case of Marvel Movies yeah it has to be them.
