7 would be better if it wasn't a Star Wars sequel since at least then I could just say "Oh, it's ripping off Star Wars" instead of "Why is Star Wars ripping off itself?"

There are moments when they are a little too self-aware about it and it comes off as a parody, like when Han says, "So how do we blow it up? There's always a way with these things."

Still an enjoyable movie though!

I never thought the RotS Anakin/Obi Wan duel was legitimately good unless you're in it for cheese. Much like the whole movie. It has dumb as hell dialogue and I love it.

Honestly the only good lightsaber duel in the entire series is Luke vs Vader in Empire imo. The rest are just flips with lights and cool music, or not active/high tension enough, depending on whether you're watching the PT or OT.

Luke going HAM and pummeling Vader into injured submission is a very powerful scene. As a kid, the Luke/Vader/Emperor scenes in VI actually made me feel a little uncomfortable because of the raw emotion involved. It was definitely the "heaviest" Star Wars got for me.

That moment is good too yeah. Weird to call it a lightsaber duel in the traditional sense because it's a weird circumstance but yeah if that whole sequence counts then I'll say that one's also good.

Well, it's similar to the one in ESB in the sense that it's spread out over multiple scenes and isn't one continuous battle, so it's fair to count in the same vein.

I meant more that it's kinda like, scripted, than an honest duel where both sides are really trying to win

Then again Vader vs Obi Wan in A New Hope is kinda the same way so-- and hell you could argue Vader vs Luke in Empire is like that too when you really think about it, so yeah, should definitely count.

I dunno what this business with everyone suddenly deciding to overrate 3 and underrate 7 is. 7's a fun space adventure with likeable characters and competent, non-CGI overloaded cinematography with precious little of the kind of dumb shit that fills the PT. It's good!

Thought the general consensus was AOTC was the worst.

BTW I think people have more just soured more on 7 as time has gone on and they've had time to digest what didn't work for them beyond it being a bit derivative moreso than deciding to overrate 3 which we'd had plenty of time to digest by the time 7 had come out.

Like me personally at least I actually had this opinion the whole time-- the only thing that has changed is I'm more sure I prefer 3 as more time passes. I know when the movie first came out I was definitely in quite a minority when I dared say that 7 was closer to the PT in quality than the OT. But yeah as hype wore off and maybe they've thought about the movie more, or even rewatched it, I think more people have come around on that.

I dunno. VII has always firmly rested in the very broad nexus between the OT and the PT and hasn't really budged for me. Rogue One is nestled in there now, too.

Well I guess saying "closer to the PT in quality" is kinda misleading since I kinda put the majority of that broad nexus between Episode 1/2 and Episode 3. But I think most people do that since 3 > 1/2 is near universal.

Rogue One and Ep7 both commit the same sin, which is that they don't bother to fucking do anything for the first chunk of the movie. For TFA it's about 30 minutes. For Rogue One, it's the entire first act until you see a hologram pop up. Straight up, I think if you watch Rogue One you should fastforward until you see a hologram, then stop, rewind back a tiny bit and watch the movie and it'd come out much stronger for it.

---

On the topic of lightsaber fights, BTW: I really didn't like a lot of stuff about TFA, but I'll say that I really enjoyed the lightsaber duel even with Rey's second wind being total bullshit. It felt...strong. Weighty, if that makes any sense? They took advantage of the inexperience of the combatants on all sides to create something that was powerful and deliberate in terms of choreography and I liked it a lot.

It's much different. 3 is more melodramatic while 1/2 are serious outside of the obvious attempts at comic relief. Think overacted versus underacted

I think Vader was fine, but I'll agree that Thrawn was awesome. Part of that was just through the fact that he was introduced in a well written book. Book characters almost always beat out movie characters in terms of character development

Halfway through Episode II (wish I could finish these in one go, but it's tough with my schedule aaaand they're hard to sit through).

The Anakin/Padme scenes are worse this time around. Awkward child actors are at least understandable, if not cute. Awkward 20-year-old actors are just... awkward, and this really is some of the worst love dialogue I've ever heard. Lucas is writing this like someone's who's never actually left his house, let alone been in a relationship.

That said, I'm happy to report that the Obi-Wan scenes on Kamino are better than anything in TPM (or the rest of this movie). There's revelation at the discovery of the planet/army, and pretty good tension during his meeting with Jango Fett. That - and a more comprehensible plot overall - means I'm enjoying this more than EpI.

I'm not a big Star Wars fan but it's mostly cause I've found 4 & 5 to be overrated. I think the universe is fascinating and the characters are fun, but I just get a little bored watching them. I'm not really impressed by anything, and I'm talking about the script, the plot, the action.

I've heard all the complaints about 7 but I still think it's my favorite, followed by 5 & 4, and then RO. 7 excites me even if it's a lot of old ground. I think I'm entirely alone in liking 7 the most, but I also don't care. Contentious Star Wars opinions leave me apathetic, almost as much as coming across any post by MWC about DBZ or Kingdom Hearts.

after catching up on this thread, i'm just gonna come out and say, episodes 2 and 3 had the worst dialogue but i just mark out for any lightsaber fight

anakin dual-wielding was awesome and almost justified hayden christensen's badness otherwise

episode 7 is an awful fit into the star wars canon and it went overboard in terms of callback/being an attempt to set up stuff for the next movie. i'm not sure the franchise/sequel-setup stuff worked great, but it's super-fun in terms of writing and re-establishing faith that this can work.

Rogue One and The Force Awakens are just as good as they were the first time I saw them
And this is without a nostalgia that some people should have for this movie, can't imagine how hyped I would have been if I loved that series and then after 20 years I would see the actors of Luke, Leia and Han Solo on the screen again

Complete ranking by episode number
7>4>Rogue One>5>3>2>1>6

Can make a case for 4>7 but I think it aged pretty badly, even the remastered version or whatever
Can also make a case for 3>5
