It is definitely a scummy move. To release a new character with no advanced notice (like the other new characters have been), and on a banner with old characters.

You can tell that a ton of people are upset over that.

I mean I agree it's a scummy move but I don't think people would care nearly as much if she wasn't a desired waifu. People wouldn't have cared if it was Arden. There's plenty of characters that are difficult to get, Ayra is not special in that regard! The controversy just seems overblown to me.

You're really underestimating that factor. Arden is just as OP if not more OP, but like I said, no one would care if he was the one on the banner instead. The FEH board & subreddit basically fell in love with Ayra's art to a really strong degree that I still don't quite understood.

Yeah, Arden is very good too but I couldn't imagine outrage over him being the banner character. Character art makes the difference.

I half expected this to happen. They couldn't both be TT rewards and IS knows people will spend money for her over him.

Next, we'll get a flying red mage waifu for Halloween. Pretty much expecting it now

the outrage is due to a combination of Ayra not being in the banner with Sigurd AND not being on a banner with new units AND not being announced when the others were. some people spent all their orbs on Sigurd when they may have wanted Ayra more. if they were together, some people like me could pull for both at once instead of having to do it separately. or at least if there were 6 new units all announced at once that would be fine too.

Yeah that's a pretty valid point to be fair. I kinda think it's dumb and I don't even really care about Arya. I mostly just had an itch to draw and wanted to draw Red. (Maybe I should've went for Sigurd instead)

I feel like all those things combined with the power creepy nature of the unit paint a pretty nasty picture though. I don't think saying it's all waifurage is fair.

I won't be able to do this until I get home in a few hours but the numbers don't really change much from banner to banner. As a result things we know from analyzing previous banners largely still apply.

Ayra being on a three character banner is a good thing if you just want Ayra. It means it will be easier to get her than if she was on a hypothetical four character World of Holy War banner that included her. Sharing a colour with Eldigan doesn't really hurt your chances of getting Ayra much. One snag is I think a lot of people were aiming for Sigurd as well. If you wanted at least one of Sigurd or Ayra, you would have been better off if they were on the same banner.

yeah it's definitely not waifurage, at least in my case. she's a character i like quite a bit, but not a "waifu" type for me and her art is nothing special to me either. if she and Sigurd were on a banner together i think i would have pulled for them, but as is i'm just gonna keep going for Olivia.

also the powercreeped nature of her was thought to be "contained" somewhat by the limited merges. now it sucks that we're going to have to face a potential +atk or +spd +10 version of her in arena. and she'll be a permanent annoyance in future training tower/tempest trials.

Big recent examples include people being upset over pulling Oscar instead of Nephenee and Inigo instead of Azura, even though the former ones are just as good if not better.

Like I keep going back to "would people care if it was Arden?" and the answer is always no.

Also people being louder because waifu doesn't really invalidate the grievances in either case. It's kind of a man that's mostly made of straw. Not fully straw because waifufactor matters, but simply selling it as waifu factor is kinda handwaving something that is a legitimate thing to be upset about.

Fair point. The waifu factor makes people louder about it, but I agree that it is upsetting regardless of character. We've never had an unnanounced character before and it could have easily been on Sigurd's banner

I feel like double stacking colors on a banner is kind of a BS practice that they've clearly been abusing, and moreso recently.

Like if you wanna drop the rate of a character, you should release more characters to do so. Double stacking one color is just the way to do it with less work that makes people upset.

4 characters on the banner, make em 4 colors. 3 characters on a banner, make em 3 colors. That's just how it should be. If people don't want a character, then they don't want it. Should've picked a better character to release.

Eh, I think it doesn't impact your odds very much. It's more the psychological effect of pulling Oscar or something.

I'm all for small banners. I liked how they handled the double three character banners for Valentia. More of that would be nice

It changes the odds pretty significantly. Significantly enough that you know it's a calculated decision to get people to draw more, particularly when you look at the unit selection in the double stacked banners as it's almost always been sought after unit + a unit people couldn't possibly care about.

It just gets downplayed by the mathy people because the odds are still better than a single stacked 4.

hey now, Oscar happens to be one of my least favorite characters in all of Tellius. if it was Gatrie or Geoffrey or Stefan blocking me from the girls i would have been a lot happier.

and i was actually relieved to get my first Inigo. i like his voice and personality in this, and he's the best unit on the banner, i can deal with the unpleasant art for that. it was when i got the third one that i was getting annoyed.

I like all of the listed FE9 characters except for maybe Makalov. FE9 in general just has a good cast. If I had to list someone who I don't understand is popular, it would be Ilyana. She literally feels like an Awakening character in an otherwise well-written game. It doesn't help that she's pretty useful in FE10 Endgame, too. It feels ridiculous to go into that final set of chapters with some woman who is always hungry and has nothing else on her mind.

Shinon is actually pretty cool when you mess with his supports. He's also the only person who sees that Ike is just being gifted everything he doesn't actually deserve.

If we only go FE9, my least favorite has to be Rolf. Though Makalov is a moron as well.

Awakening being the worst is super hyperbolic. It has flaws but it's still a competently made game. Even if you really hate that specific formula that much, Fates has way worse issues.

Also I wish that Nintendo would put Ike's games on the eshop so people could play them and realize that they're the best

Awakening's biggest problem is its map design being awful. It's also just kind of generally broken but that's actually where I got a lot of fun out of it. It's kind of like FF8 in that it's really easy to break the game over your knee and it just becomes about how silly you can get. Not everyone's cup of tea but I had a good time with it.

Nah I think Fates was definitely better than Awakening. Lot less maps where it's just a wide open space and the only real method to win is to march in a killbot and solo everyone.

That being said I think Awakening gets a worse rap than it deserves. It's a fun game, just has some glaring flaws. I'd still take it over half the games though. Ilyana is a bad character but calling her an Awakening character wasn't really meant as a dis as just a fact that Awakening has a pretty standard type of character, where they sorta have a one note gimmick that they play up to hell, which Ilyana is similar to.

Difference is Awakening characters usually expand on that as you get more supports and stuff. Ilyana doesn't really, to my knowledge, and I did get a few because I like her design kinda and wanted her to be better than she is. So yeah, that's why she's a caricature.
