I don't think you should tip waiters.

It's not their fault they sleep on their feet and pushing them over while they're trying to nap is a dick move.

Kind of fucked up to only tip someone $7 when they barely make enough as is. A lot of wait staff are simply trying to pay their way through college. A few dollars wont come close to helping them. If you arent going to tip $20+ then go eat at McDonalds.

are you serious? idk the vast majority of servers would rather you not eat there at all if it is like 20 percent?

Is it possible that the customer was planning on leaving a cash tip? Either way, the waiter is not automatically entitled to a tip. Circling the suggested gratuity on the receipt is something that would make me not want to return to that place. Having said that, I do generally tip 20 percent.

What if I get a burger and soda at a diner for less than 20 bucks, do I still have to tip 20?

I don't like tipping but I do it because it isn't the staff's fault that the system and/or their bosses suck.

I have only seen one restaurant ever banned tipping but that pretty much became an experiment as the ban was lifted after like 6 months.

Such a shame too since that's probably the only real way to get the system to change. Legislation would be the most straightforward way, but I doubt it will happen in my lifetime. I believe the only way to change the system would be to have restaurants that ban the practice and capable of giving their staff living wages thrive and such. Not an easy path....

They're crazy, 20% is good. The bill wasn't that high so the tip corresponded to it.

But this is also why I don't tip based off of %, but service. I've tipped like 50% before on meals because of the server as I was going off of actual dollars, not %.

The auto response to this should be 0 tip. Telling the customer what to tip is reprehensible for a waiter and Id fire them if I were their boss.

Reminds me of someone I know who had a similar experience. Waiter told them that tipling below 20% is for miserable people, to which he responded by showing her how he was skipping the tip option while paying the bill. Come the fuck on. You just do the best you can and hope for the best. Stuff like this is jeopardizing your tip and livelihood.

If I was ever handed a receipt like that, they would get $0 for the tip and the restaurant would lose a customer. Wouldn't bother going to a manager or anything that extreme 'cause there's no point and I'm not actively out for the person's job. And I'm sure any server obnoxious enough to pull that would be bitching loud enough for the rest of the night that the manager would find out anyway.

The fastest way to lose your tip is to act like you're entitled to it. But if you just give me good service and are polite, I'm usually a pretty generous tipper. The system is fucking stupid, but that's not the server's fault. And if a few extra bucks is going to make or break my finances I wouldn't be dining out in the first place.

As callous as it sounds, maybe they should learn a skill set that allows them to work in a job role where they can command a decent wage if thats their attitude.

Im all for paying everybody who works a living wage, but the people at the bottom of the pile dont get to dictate that they should be paid more than a living wage.

I've never understood why tipping is percentage based. It should be based on the number of items brought to the table. Why should I have to tip more because they brought out a lamb shank instead of a bowl of mac and cheese?

I'm sure someone working 50+ hours a week and only just getting by has time to attend college or university at the time. I'm also sure the system doesn't intentionally keep people stuck in that situation by design.

From your earlier posts in another thread, it sounds like you're middle class and pretty well off, so it makes sense you look down on those at the bottom and think "well they should just work harder or get educated in a different field."

Also honestly why are we tipping here. This person gave the guest 3 drinks. Really we should tip for that? And I am honestly asking get drinks out.

Thats not an issue in any other country. If you dont want to do the work well in any job, you tend to end up leaving, either because you want to or because your boss wants you to.

Im well off now, but I grew up very disadvantaged and its taken me a long time to get to a point of being comfortable. I dont look down on people in service jobs; Ive worked in several myself.

Youre right that the system isnt fair. However, neither is your argument. I claimed that they should be earning a living wage by default. You then come back and tell me theyre working a 50 hour week. If theyre earning a living wage, thats not necessary. And yes, it is possible to train and study while working full time. It can be hard, I dont dispute that. But its not like Im suggesting something I wouldnt be willing to do. I have had full time jobs while undergoing all of my training and qualifications from the age of 16. I had two full time jobs when I was getting my A levels and it was grim. I wouldnt wish that on anybody.

However, Im also a realist. If your skill set is one that makes you easily replaceable, youre never going to command a competitive wage. That doesnt mean that I dont believe in everybody getting a fair and liveable wage.

Because they usually get paid an actual decent wage, at least in comparison.

There are shitty places like Denny's/IHOP who will start them around $9, however at most restaurants it at least starts at $12 and at mine they start you at $16, which compared to servers in TX it's 2.13 + tips and if they don't make that within an hour then they get paid the difference up to $7.25, the minimum wage. That's state law, employers could pay more than that, however they intentionally like paying servers as little as possible so I've only seen the places on the local military base offer $10 + tips.

No. The tip gets split among waitstaff, porters, dishwashers, and oftentimes cooks. If cooks do not get tips, it's because they're being paid a guaranteed salary that's higher than the others.

Not always. IHOP & Denny's, for example, don't split tips among the bussers or hosts, Olive Garden and steakhouses typically do.
