Frankly, the "content" is largely intact. What they mostly did was trim down the notoriously bloated intro. Story bits are otherwise still basically the same.
The original version of this game, one known for being a very long entry in a series already known for being longer games, had you potentially playing for nearly 90-120 minutes before you even got into your first battle. This was excessive and simply not palatable to players, even fans of the series/genre. Even if it wasn't a problem for someone specifically, pretty much everyone could agree how it was still a problem in general in terms of retaining player attention/interest.
