Board 8 > Series where you've played multiple games, but aren't a fan of?

Basically franchises where you've played multiple entries a bunch, but don't really consider yourself to be a big fan of.

To me it's the Tales of series.

Turns out I've beaten a decent amount of them:
Symphonia
Graces F
Abyss
Xillia
Zestiria
Also playing through Berseria and have Vesperia in mind.
But after beating each entry I don't ever put them up there among my favourite games ever.
I only ever buy these games because they are super cheap when going on storefront discounts and they're all at minimum ok.

Another one, isn't quite a series but all have a common thread are the David Cage games.
Beat Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls and each entry there's a fair amount of stuff I didn't enjoy, but for some reason I keep getting drawn into playing those stories.

Where is the line between just games you've played and being a fan of the series? I've played a lot of the Assassin's Creed games, but I've got tempered expectations on what to expect (and I don't read the books). Does that qualify?

Danganronpa

I came in to say Tales. I never really liked the look of them to begin with but gave Xillia a shot when it came out and thought it was pretty decent. Played the rest of them as they came out since then but never really liked them that much. The battle system is the biggest turn off for me as it's all just glorified button mashing at the end of the day.

Fire Emblem.

Uncharted, Half-Life (I like it but not a massive fan), I used to be a fan of Fire Emblem but I fell off that pretty hard, and uhhh that might be it. Smash Bros is probably the only series where I buy every entry but don't consider myself a massive fan.

Monster Hunter.

I can have fun with them, but I always feel like I'm just scratching the surface of something incredibly deep that I just don't get. It feels like one of those MMOs where half your stats and skills just give tiny increments to other stats and I have no idea why any of those stats are important in the first place, let alone why I'd want to grind for hours to increase them by 0.01%

Kingdom Hearts may qualify for me?

The first two mainline games are among my all-time favorites. Days is also okay. But everything else ranges from mediocre to some of my absolute least favorites as well.

Pokemon seems like a surprisingly good answer. I definitely used to be a fan of it, but it's hard to say I've cared about the series in roughly ten years.

Metal Gear Solid for me.

Zelda & Mario are probably the two big ones for me. They're alright games but nothing I'm crazy about.

I've played all 3 main series Danganronpa games and any future ones will be a day 1 purchase for me but I'd rather die than call myself a "Danganronpa fan"

Also Pokemon. I've played a decent number of them but they were never my favourites. I dunno, I prefer JRPGs with a) multiple party members and more than 4 skills at a time and just generally b) RPGs with more story and character development. I prefer humans to creatures. Though they are cute.

The Legend of Zelda is a series where I've played most of the games (played all of them up through the Wii), enjoy some of the games (basically anything from the SNES back), but wouldn't really call myself a fan of the series as a whole.

Pokemon too to a lesser extent. I'd consider myself a fan of the DS games, like DPP and HG/SS, but not really anything else. The other games have too much fluff I don't care for or not enough substance

Well if we're using that sort of definition of 'fan', then I'm not a 'fan' of anything except maybe Star Trek.

There are many franchises I love. There is no 'fandom' that I would ever want to be remotely associated with.

Yeah, I'd say there's a bit of a difference between being a fan of something and being part of a fandom community.

I'm struggling to decide whether I define fan as 'someone who enjoys the games' or 'someone who cares about the series and will participate in the community'.

For the former, Assassin's Creed is the one that comes to mind. I played all of them up to Syndicate, but have no interest in playing any of them again despite knowing that the series has kind of turned a corner and that the new games are considered pretty good.

For the latter, Pokemon and Fire Emblem both come to mind. I play all the Pokemon games and enjoy them, but don't care at all about any of the extra stuff that comes with it and don't participate in any online stuff. I just complete every new game, update my living dex, and then move on until there are new Pokemon to catch.

For Fire Emblem, I usually play any new game that comes out, but I honestly couldn't tell you much about it and don't particularly care for completing every optional conversation or story part of whatever. I just like the genre of game and it's a pretty approachable one of those.

Dragon Quest for me. I think the series has some good ideas but they're buried under lots of very grindy combat and I never end up being as impressed with the stories as I would have liked.

I don't have time/energy to play all the games I'm actively excited about, much less ones I'm not. That said I kinda soured on Dangan Ronpa eventually, and Pokemon and Mario Sports went in directions that dulled my interest.

Silent Hill is the biggest offender for me in this category; I've also played a significant amount of Call of Duty for the social aspect with friends, but I truly don't enjoy the series without them.

Hm. I can't immediately think of any series where I've beaten multiple games but didn't like any of them. And I play series from the very beginning a lot. But those are usually popular series, so they have to be liked for a reason. It's not that I don't dislike popular things. Some old 3D platformers were an absolute nightmare for me. But there's usually something in a series to redeem it.

I've beaten 1-3 and played most of TF. I appreciate them as games, but after I eventually beat TF I'll likely never return to them.

There are many franchises I love. There is no 'fandom' that I would ever want to be remotely associated with.

It's not so much the fandom as much as how many characters are too stupid for me to want to associate with, and the juvenile sense of humour/fanservice stuff.

Tales was the first thing that came to mind for me too. Zestiria and Berseria was okay but Vesperia was awful. I struggle to find anything good to say about Vesperia and most people seem to agree that it's one of the best!

Love the creatures for the most part, had some fun with the games in the past but I'm completely checked out from ever caring about the main series again. My last one was Black 2.

Spinoffs are potentially good, though.
