They go through this debate and are insistent that Afghani is the proper demonym. Afghan is the proper one. Did they seriously not do their research with a simple Google search? Or is them being wrong part of the joke

That's what I thought but Phyllis says it in a very serious manner. Everyone else is clearly clowning Michael Scott. But I think Phyllis is being serious

Well on the other hand Afghani is often used by people who don't know it's actually Afghan. It seems a bit weird that knowing the proper demonym is part of the joke since I don't think most viewers would even notice it. Kind of like most people probably wouldn't notice if they call a person Arabic instead of Arab.

In the context of the show, it's clear that the ongoing joke (always) is that nobody is competent and all office drama is so low stakes that the incompetency is funny.

the joke is still the joke whether or not it goes over any given person's head
