Oh actually, I checked the Talk page and it looks like the number is for Honolulu County, which is what the "mayor" actually governs as there is no mayor of Honolulu proper. Still probably shouldn't be listed that way.

Someone editing the page for the mayors of the 50 largest cities in the U.S. wants people to think that Honolulu has a population of over one million. I looked it up and that's not even the metro population, so it's not like some well meaning person got confused.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mayors_of_the_50_largest_cities_in_the_United_States

I checked the edit history, and it's been up since last summer. Kind of surprised that no one has corrected it since then. I'm a little curious as to how long this can last for.

I gave it a 3. It was a good ending, but, and I know this is probably kind of petty, I was just annoyed that Rowling threw out the whole school year structure for the last book. Why invest all that time in the previous six books in setting up patterns and rhythms if none of those patterns, etc. ever led anywhere?

I actually found this very detailed topic on another board about GWTW's release:

https://forums.boxofficetheory.com/topic/20886-gone-with-the-wind-1939-box-office20-million-tickets-sold-in-the-first-year/

It looks like tickets in its initial run were only .75 for a matinee and $1.00 for an evening show, which comes out to $15/$20 in today's money, so not as bad as I thought, but still much more expensive than the average movie ticket at the time, and it would have been nothing but these prices for a year.

In regards to Gone With the Wind, it should also be mentioned that tickets for its initial run would have have been much more expensive than the typical movie ticket. Big epics like that were released differently than other films back in those days, almost as if they were theatrical events. They would have tickets that cost $25 and up when adjusted for inflation, although I'm not sure what the exact numbers for Gone with the Wind are.

My mom was 8 or 9 when Star Wars was released in theaters and she still speaks glowingly of going to see it multiple times when it came out - it was a earth-shattering hit, just a huge fucking deal. It was well-received by critics too - I feel like it's easy to forget this but Star Wars was a Best Picture nominee!

Star Wars was actually the favorite to win Best Picture that year, if I remember my Oscar history correctly! Annie Hall beating it was actually considered a pretty big upset.

Lmao, please tell me this is a joke like I assumed originally

The truth hurts. It's not just people that grew up on this though. Everyone has started to develop babytastes for culture, since with so much access to media, people would prefer to settle for something familiar than to take a chance on something that might be great, because something that might be great also has a risk of being bad. And with so much to read/watch/play/listen to, nobody wants to waste time on something they might not like, or which, (and this is an absolute cardinal sin these days) might be boring. There used to be a time when people would go see a movie like Rain Man "just to see what everyone is talking about," but people these days seem to resent that idea and treat the presence of critics/awards/etc. as a personal attack.

Are great home theaters still increasing though? I thought the trend over the past several years, among young people at least, has been to ditch the TV and watch everything on your phone/laptop.

Edit: Another reason adult dramas have collapsed is because word of mouth has collapsed. Conversation is so fractured and angry these days that no one trusts anyone else. Everyone is assumed to have an agenda (not just political), so why bother paying attention to such things for something like seeing a movie which requires effort to go out and do?

I went with Mickey Mouse, since he's been consistently famous/iconic for the longest, aside from Santa, but I am unsure how well known Santa is to people that don't celebrate Christmas or live in a country that do.

I doubt it's Mario, unless we're restricting this by age. There's large swathes of the elderly that won't know who he is.

That is the objectively correct result based upon the system and laws as they currently exist.

This also continues to be true:

It's nice to know that if you want to kill people you can still just illegally put yourself in bad positions until the opportunity arises.

Well, unfortunately, this isn't something that can be changed by laws necessarily. It is currently illegal, as far as I know, to cause a death through acting recklessly. The problem is that the definition of "reckless" in a jury trial can only be defined by what society considers reckless. As sad as it is, we as a country, have determined that the actions taken by Rittenhouse and Zimmerman (on which I agree with others, that it is more egregious) are reasonable responses and not at all reckless. It is the symptom of a sick, violent, angry, fearful society.

Huh. That seems like something it would be reasonable for the jury to know about.

I don't know if this is why, but hearsay rules are surprisingly strict. I was on a jury and the main witness was not allowed to repeat things that the accused had allegedly said directly to them. I guess that might be obvious to some, but I was surprised that that was considered hearsay. For example, you can say that someone threatened you, but to say "He said 'I'm going to kill you.'" would be considered hearsay.

I did see an interesting post on another message board about how people are missing the point somewhat in regards to the criticisms of CRT in schools. When people complain about CRT, they're not being literal; they're using CRT as a catch-all for all kinds of social/cultural movements that they're opposed to that come out of certain sectors of the contemporary intelligentsia. Cancel culture, wokism, anti-racism, etc... Whether or not their criticisms are valid is certainly something that can be disputed, but to focus on the logistics of whether or not CRT is being taught in public schools is missing the forest for the trees.

Great movie, but I do want to see it again just to see if the initial vision of the murder was a lie or if they used tricky editing to make it seem like Sandy was the one being murdered. I will have to dock points if it's the former. Yes I know the visions aren't supposed to be 100% accurate, but it seems like a bridge too far to just straight up show something that didn't happen.* If it was all trick editing, then give it tons of extra points instead, because I'm pretty sure I remember her being stabbed.

I also really want this to be Diana Rigg's last role cause what a great one to go out on.

Also saw it on 35mm, which very much fit the style of the film.

*If you were to blame the mixup on the main character being drugged, I would grudgingly accept.

That's pretty much what genres are, semantics.

What it boils down to, for me, and where I think genres are actually useful as something to discuss, is in answering the following questions:

1. Would I highly recommend Smash to someone I consider a fan of Fighting Games?
2. Would I avoid recommending Smash to someone I think dislikes Fighting Games?
The answer to both of these is no for me, and easily. Because that's not really where the intent of the game is or where the appeal strikes home with.

? Every genre for every subject you can think of has particular items that you wouldn't recommend to fans, and that you would recommend to non-fans. There's plenty of unquestionable horror movies that you wouldn't recommend to horror fans, and that you would recommend to non-fans. That's the case with literally everything.

Like there are so many patterns and rhythms that the first six books set up, and then when you get to the last one to see how any of that will pay off, it's just "lol nope." I know that none of what I'm talking about was really "important," but seeing how all of the yearly Hogwarts stuff changed year to year gave the books a great flavor.

I agree with the sentiment that "retro" and similar terms can oftentimes refer to a particular style or group of titles rather than simply "____ years ago." For example,Turner Classic Movies has been on the air for almost 30 years, and in all that time I can bet you the median age of the movies shown has barely shifted forward at all, and certainly not by 30 years. There is a certain corpus of titles that are considered "classic film" or "classic Hollywood," (Everything pre-1967, and selected titles from 1967-1980) and that hasn't really changed much. Film does have a particularly locked in canon though, to be fair.
