I don't get why we have to select specific electors in the first place instead of the votes just....going to whoever earned them. It seems like a needless step in the best case, and a recipe for weird faithless elector controversy in the worst.

Electors were not initially meant to represent the popular vote. States are allowed to appoint electors however they want, not just to represent whomever wins the popular vote in their state. Every state just so happens to do that, but it's not required*. When the Constitution was written, it was assumed (and indeed was the case for most states initially) that electors would be chosen by a vote in the state legislatures (similar to how the Senate was initially chosen.) During the 1820's almost every state switched over to using a popular vote to decide electors in an effort for the country to become more democratic, and while the latter goal was achieved it established a disconnect between the Electoral College and the overall Presidential Election which was not really intended.

*South Carolina didn't have a popular vote for President until after the Civil War!

I mean of course Russia tried to influence the Brexit referendum. The US and UK have influenced other countries' internal politics for like centuries. They, and the EU, are still doing so today. It's really emblematic of nationalistic exceptionalism to act like the US/UK somehow have a right not to be influenced by other countries.

If Russia was stuffing votes, that would be a very different thing, but if it amounted to running ads on Facebook, it's not a big deal and doesn't make the outcome of the vote less legitimate.

And the people of those countries have every right to, and they should, call out the US/UK when they do so. The only one holding anyone to a double standard here is you.

Israel wondering if schools opening caused outbreaks. In a blow to those who think reopening schools is a good idea.

On the flip side, Belgium has criticized not reopening schools by saying abuse of children is rising dramatically.

Here is a graph of cases after reopening of schools for some countries.

https://i.imgur.com/K2YLGRn.png

Vertical lines are reopening dates.

Yeah, looking at that graph (assuming the scale is not really off between countries) whatever happened in Israel doesn't seem to be linked to schools, or if so there's something particularly off about how schools are opening there.

SNES and NES got Zelda 1'd in the seedings because the video I used took Metacritic scores into account. GBC being so low was my own thing, I'll admit, since the video didn't include handhelds, but length of support was one of the metrics used, and I figured GBC might be kind of lower since it wasn't around very long. And I needed something interesting for the Xbox One to go up against.

Odyssey shouldn't be a 16 seed either, but I thought it appropriate to put it in the first match.

No I don't know why either.

In terms of seeding, I was inspired by the below video, which attempts to put together an "objective" ranking of consoles based on factors such as length of support, number of titles, number of games with high Metacritic scores, etc (so blame them for the Xbox One being so low.) I hewed closely to this ranking for the higher seeds, with some changes to make things more interesting, as well as throwing in handhelds (which the video doesn't include), computers, some other fun stuff.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pI-JPlKROUk

And I bow my head in shame in advance of being told that there is a huge console I completely forgot about.

I think people also underestimated how widespread the virus already was by the end of Feb., beginning of March. Homemade masks, which is what people would have been using initially, are leaky enough that they are only advisable when the outbreak reaches a certain level, and authorities didn't think the virus was at that level yet. Another mystery is why it took NYC so long to start identifying cases. It seems clear now that their first confirmed case was identified much later in the outbreak timeline than in other areas.

IIRC, Singapore did not encourage masks at first, and they seemed to be doing well initially , so that might have misled some people as well.

When it comes to brackement placement luck/lack thereof, I think it's useful to look at the number of entrants that advanced each round. In regards to Phoenix, I wouldn't really consider 2013 good bracket placement for him. 72 characters made it to Round 2 that year, and he was almost certainly one of the 72 strongest characters in the bracket, so in a nuetral environment he would have been expected to make it to Round 2. In 2018 however, he made it to Round 3, which only 32 (not counting the byes) other characters did. I wouldn't say he was a top 32 character in the bracket, so that was good bracket placement to me.

I have a technocratic question that I've been wondering about as things reopen.

When locations such as a museum open at 25% capacity, what exactly is meant by capacity? Do they mean the literal capacity of the building, or is capacity considered the point at which the museum would normally stop new guests from entering to prevent crowds. Because the latter is done well before the literal 100% capacity number.
