Without the epilogue I'd probably give it a 4. Including the epilogue, probably a 2?

I'll average it out to a 3.

Yeah, and I'm just gonna ignore it and give it the 4.

First time seeing this series. Where's the middle-of-the-road option? I'd vote 2.5 if I could. Guess I'll be charitable and vote 3.

T&T is a 4
RotK is a 3
RoS is a 2.5 or a 3, considering what it had to work with.

I honestly don't understand the epilogue hate. It's not good, but it's not bad either. It's just there.

What do we mean by "ended"? I don't like most of the content in book 7 but the final third or so is actually resonably good.

I didn't like the trajectory of the last 3 books at all and 7 was definitely the worst of them. It's a 1 for me.

I gave it a 3. It was a good ending, but, and I know this is probably kind of petty, I was just annoyed that Rowling threw out the whole school year structure for the last book. Why invest all that time in the previous six books in setting up patterns and rhythms if none of those patterns, etc. ever led anywhere?

The Epilogue alone maybe, but it doesn't greatly affect my score of the finale as a whole overall. It's too brief and inoffensive for that.

so it's dramatic when the pattern is broken?

would Harry and crew being in school the last year be more satisfying somehow?

I guess I'll give it 3. Though it's more a 2.5, but it's good enough that I still liked the franchise afterwards.

What do you mean by that? They spent 6 years in school, which led to them going out into the world. You think those patterns should've led to... them doing exactly the same thing?

2 for RoS

You're forgiven for having missed it- we sort of took an 18 month break between weeks 7 and 8 for a variety of reasons. Going to try to keep on schedule from here out though!

Okay sure, it's been added to the list. Hopefully I can catch up before then so I can put in a vote myself (I've watched the first two seasons).

The problem with them leaving Hogwarts is that Hogwarts is an interesting setting which the series has spent time developing. The English wilderness, or really anywhere else in England, is not.

So really I guess it's not necessarily so much a problem with them leaving as just that the locations in which the story actually take place just all suck.

Specifically within the context of Harry Potter, I'd agree with pyresword -- I didn't find those to be interesting settings either, and certainly they weren't developed in the way Hogwarts was. Obviously other works can and have successfully set their stories in England, lol

Personally though I think even if JKR had handled it better, it would have fallen flat for me. The compelling part of HP to me was really only ever the school stuff.

Now obviously XIII and I are biased actually being from the place (though I dont think either of us has lived there for a very long time) but for all its sociopolitical flaws England is a beautiful country with a lot of diversity that by and large media outside the UK has failed to convey. Its actually a very good setting, just one that has not been used well at all. If you look at globally popular media depicting England, it tends to be limited to London only and sometimes you see a field. For the UK as a whole you will occasionally see Scotland added to that but thats it. So in reality it is an interesting setting, but one that has not been well utilised at all. So I was happy to see it here. Say what you will about Pokmon Sword&Shield for example, they actually put effort into reflecting the UK in its own way. Not many other examples of that from outside of the UK!

went with 3

epilogue was poorly written but a good sendoff

something feels missing about this book as it left behind hogwarts

reading the above replies - i loved a lot of these adventures outside hogwarts, but we were able to get a lot of adventures outside hogwarts in previous books as well

not saying the book should have been set at hogwarts. it was just a bit sad.

They literally end up at Hogwarts.

I gave it a 3.

I love the series. Honestly, it's one of my favourite things in the world but the 7th book definitely isn't the best in the series. It has some strong points. It has some absolute tosh. I do feel it heavily influenced my decision that Dumbledore is actually an asshole the entire time and it saddens me that not enough people see it.
