If Newsom loses the recall, some wackjob with 20% could actually win, but an anti-recall Democrat running as a backup could beat that pretty easily. Are California Dems just being that cocky?

Also, I know it may seem ridiculous to try to create cracks in the alliance between the police and the GOP, but it wasn't too long ago when you could have said the same about the GOP and the military being one of their sacred cows, and we're starting to see the beginning of a conflict there, at least with the military leadership.

I don't think that Americans have any sort of Olympic advantage because of kids playing sports, etc. The reason we win so many medals is because the US is by far the most populous developed country.

We actually *under*perform when taking all that into account. At the last Olympics the US won 3x the medals of Germany and France, despite having ~4x the population of Germany, and ~5x the population of France. Look at any other similar Western country and the US almost always underperforms in the medal comparisons relative to population.

Edit: The US does very well in Athletics and Swimming, which give out the most medals, which makes the underperformance worse if anything, since doing well in those disciplines should theoretically be helping to make up ground.

I loved these books as a kid, and I'm watching the first part now.

This valedictorian/drug dealer girl better be seceretly evil or she's making absolutely no sense right now. They've already established that the monsters are targeting Sam, they're not targeting anyone else, so if Valedictorian wants to save herself she can just leave. Why is she so obsessed with pushing Sam to her death on the way out, lol?

Also happy that they didn't drag out the lesbian reveal. I figured it out immediately, and was going "Yeah, OK, I get it. Sam's a girl. I'm way ahead of you movie." for like ten minutes. There's still time for the goofball guy to come out though, right?

I've never really liked/watched South Park, so I can't contribute anything to how that's changed for me, but to pile on with a random complaint, I never liked that "This is what they actaully believe" was seen as the crux of their attack on Scientology. Scientology is a bad cult because it brainwashes, kidnaps, and abuses people, not because they believe in some goofy theology! Who cares about that?

Jeff Bezos, the Amazon (AMZN) founder and world's wealthiest man, said Tuesday after flying to the edge of space that he planned to award $100 million each to CNN contributor Van Jones and chef Jos Andrs.

Bezos said that Jones and Andres were free to do "what they want" with the money.

"They can give it all to their own charity," Bezos said at a press conference after his trip to space. "Or they can share the wealth. It is up to them."

The money, Bezos said, was tied to a "surprise" philanthropic initiative he wanted to announce called the Courage and Civility Award.

The award aims to honor those who have "demonstrated courage" and tried to be a unifier in a divisive world, Bezos added.

"We need unifiers and not vilifiers," Bezos said. "We need people who argue hard and act hard for what they believe. But they do that always with civility and never ad hominem attacks. Unfortunately, we live in a world where this is too often not the case. But we do have role models."

Jones, accepting the award, said that "sometimes dreams come true."

"You bet on me and I appreciate it," Jones told Bezos, later adding that it was money for him to "give to others who have a similar spirit."

Andrs, who has poured his efforts into feeding those in need around the world, said that the award itself "cannot feed the world on its own."

"But," Andrs added, "this is a start of a new chapter for us."

Anderson Cooper, who was anchoring CNN's special coverage on Tuesday, said on-air after Bezos announced the award that it was "quite a surprise."
"None of us knew anything about it," Cooper said.

Like, if I was Van Jones or Jose Andres, I'd be too embarrassed to accept this, and would just ask him to donate it to a charity himself.

Edit: I think the two of them both have charities, so just donate it to that instead. WTF?

I doubt anyone here knows anything, but does anyone know anywhere I could finish watching Philly D.A? I've been watching it on PBS's streaming app, but it looks like access to it expired on July 1st. I was under the impression PBS actually helped produce it, so this shouldn't be a rights issue, and I can't find any info for how else to view it. Very odd.

Edit: Never mind. I found it; it's on some streaming service named Topic. I had to go to the filmmaker's web site to figure it out.

The original Sonic games were a product of the Genesis's more "arcadey" approach to console gaming, and eventually consumers wanted something more "immersive." I think that Sega's problem is that instead of leaning into that arcade style consistently, or blowing up the gameplay of a Sonic game completely, they've tried to split the difference between that sensibility and a more modern one, to frequently unsatisfying ends.

I've seen people saying that the votes were all for minor/irrelevant candidates, so it seems unlikey to shift anything thankfully, although I'm not sure where that part of the information is coming from.

I know that when people talk about this currently they're being tongue in cheek, but people act as if in the future this can be done by a non-professional. But, like how? These are objects that are made up of a variety of different materials. You can't just insert a sheet of plastic (or whatever substance they use for 3d printing) and get something with a fully functional engine or a firing mechanism. That requires metal, among other things, Would you have to design a huge sheet with all the materials in a predetermined place? That's not going to be the kind of thing you can just buy off the street.
