What if you were a billionaire's friend? Would it be fair to ask you to turn down gifts just because you held a high office, even though you weren't influenced by those gifts at all?

Um, yes? Holding high office is privilege, not a right. Don't take the office if you want to keep accepting gifts.

This was frustrating as I recognized the opening image *immediately,* but could not remember where it was from. The actual answer was one of the ones that crossed my mind, and I should have just gone with it, as it was different enough from the rest, I should have known it meant something. I don't remember the second image from the movie, but I was able to rule out everything else based on it.

We've seen massively popular games have no effect on their characters' popularity, so I don't think the movie guarantees anything more than keeping Mario Team's popularity steady.

That being said, Peach has a more active role than usual in the movie, so she might get a little boost, temporarily at least.

Sad for NC, too.

A state legislator who campaigned on progressive ideas including no abortion bans won overwhelmingly (over 20 points) in her state legislature district. She announced that she'd be joining with the republicans, giving them a supermajority of the governor veto.
Her term started in January. NC has no mechanisms to trigger a recall of any kind.

Wonder how much she got paid, and if she's competing with Sinema for some award somewhere.

Have no clue how accurate this is, but:

Kind of a sidebar here, but I feel like there's this meme every time a new technology gets criticism that goes "People always complain about new technology. Why, people even complained about the telephone." with the unstated implication being that those criticism weren't valid, so these aren't either.

But, a lot of the contemporaneous criticisms about items like the telephone WERE valid! It did ruin the art of letter writing; it was noisy and disruptive in households. Same with other technologies. Television did shorten attention spans. It was just that we, as a society and as individuals, both consciously and unconsciously, decided that the positives outweighed the negatives for these technologies, but that doesn't mean they didn't exist, and we've done a great disservice over the years by pretending that they didn't, both when it comes to the technologies in question, and when it comes to emerging technologies in the future.

Anything in italics, I didn't see a confirmation, but am extrapolating based on other films from the company/distributor. Didn't bother with shorts, or the Song nominees:

Netflix: All Quiet on the Western Front, Blonde, Glass Onion, Bardo, Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio, The Sea Beast
Hulu: Triangle of Sadness, Empire of Light, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed
HBO Max: Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, All That Breathes, Navalny, The Batman
Disney+: Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Fire of Love, Turning Red
Amazon Prime: Women Talking, Argentina: 1985
Peacock: Tar, The Fabelmans, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
Paramount+: Top Gun: Maverick, Babylon
Apple+: Causeway
Showtime: Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Whale
Starz: Living
PBS: A House Made of Splinters

Gonna make a No Guts, No Glory prediction and go with Kerry Condon for Supporting Actress:

Angela Bassett and Jamie Lee Curtis split "Career Oscar" votes, and Stephanie Hsu leeches further votes from the latter. The British contingent then comes through and votes in a block for Condon. Whenever you have a somewhat divided field, never count out the Brits coming through and voting for one of their own.

Yeah, that's puzzling. There's something to be said about the value of good narrative construction even in a big popcorn movie that doesn't have sparkling dialogue, and I think this is an underrated aspect when people judge writing. I wouldn't begrudge a screenplay nom for Avatar or Black Panther for instance. There's just nothing to Top Gun's story though.

All 5 Best Director Nominees are nominated for Best Original Screenplay. I don't know if we've ever had a set of nominees be duplicated that way. If it wasn't for Tony Kushner co-writing The Fablemans, the two line ups would be exactly the same.

The issue in calling something "objectively" beautiful or ugly is a matter of humility. One should never feel comfortable that one's own opinion is objective truth, or that a single person could ever know what objective beauty is.

That doesn't mean there is not objective beauty*. At the very least, that should be what an artist is working towards. Anything else is an artistic dead end.

*Or truth, transcendence, whatever you want to call it.

The right has always believed that Democratic victories are illegitimate not because of vote fraud, but because Democratic/liberal politicians and figures are illegitimate due to their very existence. This is a good article giving a rundown of how this evolved during Obama's term and eventually led to Jan. 6

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/19/magazine/stop-the-steal.html

Two particular themes of the Tea Partys politics struck Williamson at the time and loomed larger to her after the 2020 election. One was the conspiracism that characterized the views of many grass-roots Tea Partyers, despite the best efforts of the more mainstream-oriented leaders. It drew from a wide range of sources: vintage ones like the John Birch Society and Barry Goldwaters 1964 presidential campaign alumni of both often turned up in Tea Party meetings and newer strains like Alex Joness Infowars media empire and the wild-eyed quest for Obamas long-form birth certificate. Where those sources met was in a narrative of dispossession in which true Americans were losing their country to actors from outside the proper bounds of public life. This was the other big theme: the idea, Williamson told me, that a substantial part of the American public were not legitimate actors in American politics.

This idea reached its purest expression in the conspiracy theories about Obama, whose presidency was so unsquarable with what the Tea Partyers believed to be the true nature of America that to some it seemed, ipso facto, to represent a crime. Even those who in interviews did not espouse conspiracy theories like the birth-certificate claim confided to Skocpol and Williamson an uneasiness about the new president that went beyond normal partisanship. I think that hes actually not what he seems to be, one Virginia Tea Partyer told them. Several interviewees told them that Obama planned to give amnesty to illegal immigrants in order to secure 10 million extra votes for his re-election enough to allow him to continue to ignore the interests of real Americans, Skocpol and Williamson wrote.

Not all Tea Partyers claimed that Obama had actively defrauded the electoral system. But even those who distanced themselves from the most overtly conspiratorial claims often argued that he had revealed the systems vulnerability. The nation was imperiled by the cult of multiculturalism, aided by leftist liberals all over, who dont have the same ideas about America as we do, Tom Tancredo, a former Republican congressman from Colorado and a star of the new movement, declared at the first Tea Party convention in Nashville in early 2010. People who couldnt even spell the word vote, or say it in English, put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House. He went on: This is our country. Lets take it back.
